1. http://www.landings.com/evird.acgi?pass=49616233&ref=-&mtd=41&cgi=%2Fcgi-bin%2Fnph-search_nnr&var=0&buf=66&src=_landings%2Fpages%2Fsearch_nnr.html&nnumber=21pf That plane is certified as Experimental, Exhibition. That basically means its good for flying to and from airshows, but not a whole lot more. Not legal for giving rides for hire and that sort of thing. There are 28 mig 21s registered in the US. All seem to be experimental, exhibition: http://www.landings.com/evird.acgi?pass=49616233&ref=-&mtd=41&cgi=%2Fcgi-bin%2Fnph-search_nnr&var=0&buf=66&src=_landings%2Fpages%2Fsearch_nnr-complex.html&fld_nr1=2&pattern1=05602PQ%0D%0A05602Q5%0D%0A056037S%0D%0A0560644%0D%0A056163Q%0D%0A05616QY%0D%0A05618YS&fld_nr1=2&acman=&acmod=&pattern3=&fld_nr3=6&pattern2=&fld_nr2=4&pattern9=&fld_nr9=16&pattern4=&fld_nr4=9&pattern5=&fld_nr5=10&pattern7=&fld_nr7=11&pattern6=&fld_nr6=12&pattern8=&fld_nr8=14&data_type=HTML&return=SCREEN_RET&max_ret=1000&start_ret=1&fullsearch=NO Dave
2. According to my calculations, if you exited at 14,000 in that climb, you'd continue climbing without the plane for 12 seconds to an altitude of about 16,000 feet. That would be cool. Someone check my math. I'm too tired.
3. moved to /misc/. Cool video!
4. Speaking of knee jerk reactions, instant gripes, etc, AHHHHHH MAKE IT GO AWAY!!! I opened dropzone.com this morning, clicked on forums, and then I got all confused! I can't handle the change!!! HEEEELLLLP! Ok, maybe its just a little early for me. I might do better in the afternoon when I'm 3/4ths awake instead of 1/10th awake. Dave
5. Yeah that can happen... A connection might stay alive after a download finishes. Try disconnecting completely (or closing your browser) then reconnecting. If that doesn't work, the connections will just time out after a while. It would be nice if we could have a little more control over who can connect, how much they can download, etc, but to set anything like that up we'd need separate usernames/passwords for everybody which is obviously not possible. Mirroring the site would be nice but that just means more work for anyone running it. I still have an /uploads/ directory full of files because I haven't watched most of them to see where they should go yet. Connection is slow and almost out of hard drive space. Anyone wanna send me an 80 gig hard drive or a CD burner?
6. If the USPA goes by the FAA definition of skydiving, those arent skydives. From FAR 105.3: Parachute jump means a parachute operation that involves the descent of one or more persons to the surface from an aircraft in flight when a aircraft is used or intended to be used during all or part of that descent. Parachutist means a person who intends to exit an aircraft while in flight using a single-harness, dual parachute system to descend to the surface. Dave
7. Been sitting in the uploads directory for a long time but I finally got around to watching it... /cutaways/OverTheTop.mpg (3 megs) Not a cutaway, but cameraman's reserve deploys on climbout over the tail of a porter. Damn! /misc/dislocated.mpg (6.5 megs) Guy dislocated his right shoulder on a funneled 3 way exit. Cameraman pulls for him. /cutaways/steve1000.mpg (800 Kb) Steve gets a surprise on his 1000th jump, a freefly tube jump from 4500. Dave
8. I have 2002 too. I fly just about every real life flight i'm going to do before i do it. Course i usually do it in a much faster plane in the simulator, but its still realistic enough to give me an idea of the scenery along the route so i can be familiar before i do the real thing. Get yourself some addon planes. I suggest http://www.flightsim.com. Gotta register (free) but you can download hundreds of types of planes/helicopters. I try just about every new twin otter that comes out. Can't find one that truly flies like the real thing though. Dave

How???

Just did a quick calculation... at my current rate, I'll be hitting 1000 jumps in just under 58 years. WOOOOOHOOOOOO! Almost there!!!! Dave

Skydiving Dog

watch the videos and tell me that dog isnt having the time of his life: ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/misc/doggy1.mpg ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/misc/doggy2.mpg (about 2 megs each). That dog is loving it. Dave
11. Ahh, if you view ftp sites in "folder mode," you're right. I prefer the old browser style FTP that just turns it into a web page. But yeah, most people probably have to use copy to folder. Good point. Dave
12. I can't figure out why windows media player isn't smart enough to buffer the proper amount for smooth play. But anyway, you can either download the files to your hard drive then play em, or you can open them in media player (or whatever) and wait for them to fully download before playing them. Just hit stop when they open and wait till the download bar is done, then hit play. To download them, right click on the file you want and hit "save target as" or something like that. The speed seems to have increased quite a bit (at least to me) recently, but it still tends to be a bit slower than a cable modem is capable of. Still a whole lot better than it was when it was running out of my college dorm room! Dave
13. moved to /freefly/whit/clouds.wmv. By the way the IP address of the server has changed and the skydivingmovies.com URL should be working soon. To connect now, you can use http://66.102.107.178. Dave
14. Airliners can easily have wing loadings of 100 lb/ft^2. For a 200lb jumper, that would require a 2 square foot canopy. A wingsuit must be a lot bigger than that. So, when we're landing heavily loaded wingsuits with wheels, and perhaps encased in an aluminum tube with rigid wings, we could probably get down to 10 square feet of wing area or less. Course you'd be flying a plane but thats a different story. Dave
15. In case anyone missed it in the other forum, the Cobalt 25 was landed for the first time by SkyMonkeyOne (with a little help from me... ) Dave
16. The original in case anyone was curious... Dave
17. Someday I'll figure out photoshop-style video editing. :-) Dave
18. It's official. The Cobalt 25 was landed for the first time. Congrats Chuck! SOOOOOOOO bored tonight. Dave
19. I've seen a camera flyer get in the plane with no rig, but someone pointed out his mistake before the plane moved. He was just learning camera flying and was trying out his new camera suit/helmet setup. He never lived that one down. Dave
20. 2 hour drive or 45 minute flight. Under class B airspace here, so need to get pretty far out to find skydiving. All in all driving is quicker when you count the drive to the airport, planning, preflight, taxiing, and tieing down at the DZ, but its a hell of a lot funner. Dave
21. Awesome video. I think i'll be moving that one to /computer_animated_skydiving_videos/.

Who's the asshole that's been doing voodoo rain dances in the DC area every time I want to go fly? REALLY unnecessary! GRRRRRRRRRR. Dave
23. ...and just in case the FAA is reading, ummm, yeah, they're all kidding. We don't ever jump through clouds or haze. All skydivers stay 1000 feet above, 500 feet below, and 2000 feet horizontally from clouds at all times. It would be irresponsible to do otherwise. Anyway, everybody knows skydivers breathe through their skin so we'd suffocate if we jumped in clouds. Dave
24. Sounds like he got to see this one... http://www.johnandjanine.com/videos/tandemwaiver.ram
