The GKs do a good job promoting skydiving and recruiting at airshows and sporting events and stuff like that. I don't think the general public, even the ones that know who the GKs are, know they compete though. I have no problem with it, but it does kind of surprise me that the government pays for all that training. I do think they should be winning every US competition though for all that money. Dave

Oh one thing I thought of...pretty obvious, but make sure the jumpers with the flag face the sun. In that banner video above, it took them a while (most of it was cut out of this video because of some static) to get facing the right direction for the camera. Dave

You can see a video of something similar (a two person banner) at ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/cpsc/banner.wmv. Dave

A wingsuit flies with some vertical and some horizontal motion. All you'd need is a wind tunnel set up at an angle. Course one little turn and WHAM, into the wall ya go! Dave

I remember on my first jump the instructors were re-boarding the plane by the time I touched down. I doubt it would be possible for an AFF instructor to get above a student, unless he opened first. On one of the last jumps I did a few weeks ago, I was the first person out of the plane (an otter), and second to last on the ground. Even tandems beat me down. And I think they even did a second pass! Whatcha all in such a hurry to land for?

1:1.25 (aka .8:1). Having plenty of fun, so I see no reason to downsize any time soon. I load my reserve at about 1.08:1. Dave

There's a whole bunch of angry guys with rocks that'll disagree with ya!

Lorena bobbit died in a car accident last night...

Ya know I heard from a friend of a friend of her's that she's actually a really nice person. Someday I'm hoping to meet her... although I wouldn't get too close. -
I heard about this a few days ago and I'm still pretty shocked. Martin is the most experienced, and by FAR the most safety conscious skydiver I know. I have though before that landing accidents fall into 2 categories... inexperienced jumpers making dumb mistakes like low turns, and very experienced jumpers flying highly loaded canopies messing up hook turns. This one doesn't fit either category. To me, that makes it really scary. Martin is the very LAST person I'd expect to get hurt like that, so it really has me thinking about the possibility of something like that happening to me. All I know is I'm not downsizing from my F111 canopy loaded at .8 any time soon. Dave

Bunch of new videos recently... /from tv/belgacom commercial.mpg (2.5 megs) Hilarious tv commercial discussed in another thread /from tv/cutaway_scene[1-2].wmv (3 megs and 8 megs) A couple scenes from the movie cutaway for those that missed it or really liked it. The first one is just a clip that contained a bunch of random skydiving, and the second one is a bunch of speed star and a classic death scene (I won't spoil it for ya though...) /cpsc/banner.wmv (3.4 megs) A banner jump by a couple University of Maryland Students. /cpsc/cpsc.wmv (6.5 megs) A College Park Skydiving Crew (UMD) intro video to show the world what they're all about. I put this one together so don't laugh too hard. And yes, I know the resolution sucks in parts of it. I'm working on it.

Whoever uploaded that video about Eric Fradet, I deleted it by mistake. OOPS! Can ya upload it again? I know it was big....34ish megs. Sorry! Dave

I wouldn't try it, but this might give ya an idea for educational purposes only... on my server, /skyball/2ball 1.mpg. Dave

I have a microraven 120 myself, but I've heard a lot of people, including riggers, say the PD reserve is the best one out there. I couldn't get a good answer as to what makes it better, but thats just the opinion I've heard over and over. Dave

There are a few videos that show tube deployments on my server... /freefly/goverticalsep00.asf has a few /freefly/monroe_tube(1-3).mpeg each have one. It's pretty scary seeing the canopy just kinda rubbing up against the tube like that if ya ask me. Dave

I dont think Bush did that, but Richard Branson (owner of virgin atlantic) did. He took AFF while preparing for his attempts at flying a hot air balloon around the world in case he had to bail out. Dave

Finally got a VCR connected to my computer so I can do some video editing. I uploaded a video of a couple University of Maryland students jumping with a "fear the turtle" banner. It's available at ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/cpsc/banner.wmv. You'll probably need to right click on the link and save it since for whatever reason wmv files wont seem to play directly off the server. That one's about 3.4 megs. There's also a 32 meg avi version but the quality really isnt much better. The only editing I did was setting it to the school's fight song (Ok, I couldnt think of anything better and I didnt feel like searching for music) and cutting out some sections that were staticy. More info about the jump is available at http://www.umd.edu/studentorg/cpsc/bannerjump.html. Dave

Bunch of skydiving clips from various james bond movies in the /James Bond/ folder on my site. Golden Eye (chases a porter off a cliff, catches in in freefall) Living Daylights (parachutes out of a freefalling car, lands on a boat) Moonraker (the classic fight in freefall for the single parachute) The Spy Who Loved Me (Skis off a cliff, opens round) Tomorrow Never Dies (HALO jump into water) Dave

I met them at a DZ this summer and bought a new plot chute from them. They installed it for free, which required some work to unstitch the old bridle from the d-bag. Haven't bought from them online, but in person they were very nice and very easy to deal with. Dave

print screen will not work for most video software... Try it in windows media player for example. the video will just look black. The reason is that the video is being handled directly by the video card, not the processor, so windows just leaves a space for it to appear. As far as windows itself is concerned, there's nothing there. I don't know the answer to the original question though. There are lots of video editing software out there that'll let you take screen shots. I don't know any free ones off the top of my head though. Dave

0 (number of pieces of furniture in my new room):0:0. I just moved into a new place. No bed, no desk, no dresser, nuttin. I'm sitting on the floor typing this. The good news is, as long as the weather holds out, I'm going flying tomorrow for my first time since april of 2001. Hope I remember how to do it! Just flap my arms real hard right? I jumped last wednesday at least... a 182 for my second time. first time was my first jump. I hung from the strut... always wanted to do that.

I have the problem on my Reflex that the D-bag is too tall for me to rotate...it bumps into the reserve container. I had been placing it in with the line stows down then rotating it as far as i could then sort of smooshing it into place. It makes for a very messy pack job, usually with a top corner of the dbag sticking out above one of the side flaps in the end. I started placing it in already rotated, so the line stows are at first exposed at the bottom of the container. As I close each side flap, I need to stuff the lines under. It seems to end up cleaner that way. But, I was taught to put the D-bag in lines down and rotate it. Can putting it in already on it's side cause any problems? Dave

I haven't moved it yet cause I haven't actually downloaded it yet. It's just too big... over 400 megs. If you can, upload a more compressed version sometime. I don't have room on my hard drive for it anymore.
