  1. Sorry, limit of one per customer. You woulda been first on my list if I just could have though... Actually I didn't get presents there for anyone. If I'm waking up at 6:15 AM to shop, its gonna be for ME! Also got me a 2 pack of webcams for $10. Gonna start charging for the DaveCam peep show. Anyone wanna pay to watch me sleep tonight? Dave
  2. They dont let me play with the complicated compluters anymore. Now i just sit on my ass and move files every once in a while when i get around to it. Speaking of that, i'll move some new ones soon to wherever they belong. On the bright side I can start downloading some of the bigger files i havent seen yet. Just installed my new 60 gig hard drive and CD burner (which was $10 at staples last friday at 7 am). Dave
  3. ahh ok, i read it wrong... thought ya meant to unpack it all and let it sit after storing it for a while. Dave
  4. For what purpose? Why nothing on the reserve spring? Is this to prevent the spring from permanently shrinking or something? I don't think a metal spring would permanently deform unless it was left for many years (maybe hundreds?), would it? If taking the canopies out is to prevent them from becoming stiff from being packed so long, hasn't that idea been debunked over and over through testing? What am I not seeing? Dave
  5. Thanks for the review. I'll definitely pass on this one. By the way, the old reapercam video was one of a few that I was actually threatened with a lawsuit over (for having it on my server). Just one more reason I'd choose not to buy this one (or anything from a certain "Gear-Store"). Dave
  6. A perfect match for the TSA. Snooty Chicken it is! Dave
  7. I had the spins for a couple jumps. For me it was my legs. A toe tap helped me get some awareness of what my legs were doing. The whole relaxing thing never worked for me. It's just not possible to force yourself to relax. That will happen automatically when freefall control "clicks" for you. It'll happen. Suddenly on one jump you're just going to feel rock solid stable. Just keep working at the body position and find out what's causing the spin. Your instructors should be able to tell you if its your arms, legs, or something else. The stress will end when the spins end, not the other way around. Just keep trying! Dave
  8. The knee bone's connected to the leg bone, the eye bone's connected to the nose bone... EVERYBODY! Dave
  9. Ahh ok. By the way, this reminds me of something one of my aerospace engineering profs said a while back. He was talking about something called a horseshoe vortex, which is the cause of interference drag (like where the wing meets the fuselage, etc). Anyway, he said "I like to split up the horse and the shoe when i write horseshoe. Otherwise someone might think it says 'horses hoe'." What a freaking nutcase! I love that guy! Dave

    Caught !

hehe sorry! I'm sure that stuff really happens but cats have such good night vision they'd never let ya get close enough for a picture. So it was a reenactment of a real event. Feel better? Dave
  11. Not sure I understand this. It could theoretically prevent a pilot chute in tow, but how could it avoid horseshoes? If you pull unstable, any kind of pilot chute can wrap around ya, right? Dave

    Caught !

Thats actually from a Sony (or was it panasonic) ad for a camera with night vision mode. I have a photoshop book that explains how they did it. Nope, the cat and dog weren't even in the same room at the same time. Dave
  13. I fly planes, but had a similar situation over the summer with helicopters. I was working at a helicopter company and jumping at an airport with a helicopter school. I just had to try it. At $195/hr dual, I knew there was no way I could afford to really do it. But the one flight was a lot of fun! Flying planes is awesome. Who cares if you're living in a cardboard box as long as you're having fun, right? I find skydiving more fun than flying, but flying is more rewarding. Flying to the DZ to make a couple jumps is just the ultimate. Both times I've tried that this year have ended with no jumps. Stupid wind. But instead of sitting around waiting for the wind hold to end, I took people for plane rides. Sure beats doing NOTHING! Dave
  14. ...and God spoke unto Moses... What a gorgeous flight yesterday. My passenger took that pic with my digital camera. That effect was actually the sunshine coming through the clouds and reflecting off of a little rain shower (which I flew through a couple minutes after the pic was taken). Such a neat flight though. There was a thin line of rain right between where I was taking off from and where I wanted to go (the Chesapeake Bay). Visibility was great though so I just went right through. Weather on both sides was great, just had to get a little wet to get there and back. Dave
  15. I got a 10/11. Purty silly. That Moses question got me though!
  16. Moved to /landing/rantoullanding.wmv Dave
  17. I don't know but I can answer a different question. The minimum requirement to jump it is an A license and around 70 jumps, in case anyone else was curious. Now all I need is some good weather! Dave
  18. Anyone know the license (or jump number) requirement to jump it? Dave

    tUNNEL $$$

Yep, thats just how i'd picture it. Exactly like a horizontal wind tunnel on its side. You should see how many i've sketched in the margins of notebooks when i've been bored in class.
  20. Personally I have no wisdom about CRW or AADs, but I dunno whats so hard to understand about this. If you have a problem using an AAD when you do CRW, do it elsewhere. Anyway, isn't it POSSIBLE that during an entaglement you might not be able to reach your reserve handle but your back is still clear, so the cypres might save your life? If you're falling faster than 78 mph (or whatever it is) at under 700 feet, is an AAD firing really gonna do any harm? Dave

Pretending to be till May. Then I'll graduate and be a real rocket scientist. Eh, it's no brain surgery. Dave
  22. check out /wingsuit/WingsuitMovie.wmv on my server (50 megs) if you have a chance. These guys literally go UP after exiting the C-130. How cool is that?? Forget 45 degrees, wait till they hit 110 degrees!

Recirculating, or "closed return" wind tunnels are more efficient than "open return" tunnels. The momentum of the air helps keep it flowing around the tunnel so the fans don't have to do quite as much work. Most "real" wind tunnels are closed return for this reason (and better air quality, etc). The vertical tunnels don't care nearly as much about air quality (turbulence, debris) as tunnels being used for research, so I guess they all decided to go with a cheaper construction cost. The diffuser (the part of the tunnel above the flying area) would probably have to be pretty tall which could be a problem. For a really efficient tunnel, the largest section, where the fans are, has to be much much bigger than the flying area, which is the smallest part of the tunnel. I think it would be really cool to see a vertical wind tunnel that's really made "right" as far as conventional wind tunnel standards go. Dave
  24. Well, the problem is more with the Qantas pilots. They land upside down! Dave

    Staying Warm

Makes sense to me. I noticed last winter my hands weren't cold in freefall, but they'd start to get freezing right after opening. I was told it's because you have your hands up over your head, which causes them to get less blood flow, so they get cold. Dave
