  1. Hey Kevin, Bigger pics of the pond, with Chris Beasley for scale! Blue Skies, t It's the year of the Pig.
  2. Long, long ago, in 1992, I had a malfunction on a rig that had it's last repack in the 1980's. I think it was 3 years and 2 months out of date. (We have a 6 month repack cycle.) It worked fine, but opened very hard. No, never pencil packed it. t It's the year of the Pig.
  3. I am only a moderator in Incidents and Swooping and canopy control. I have no authority outside of those forums. t It's the year of the Pig.

  7. Choose your weapon! We gonna race out the balloon from 4500! (What's the worst that could happen?) t It's the year of the Pig.
  8. He was a politician. -> Speakers Corner. It was the title of your thread, and it infers judgement. t It's the year of the Pig.
  9. Firstly, I think this should be in speakers corner. The 7th of Dec 1942 was when the US was finally dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 2nd World War, which had been going for over 3 years at the time. Wars involve politics and guns, which both belong in speakers corner. As for those still fighting to make your country great, they're not fighting very well. The US had managed to finish WW2 within 3 years, but has not even managed to contain the war in Iraq in more than the same timeframe. What's up with that? And as for infamy, and surprise attacks - or pre-emptive strikes, the US is currently in a war it started with just such an action. Be careful how you judge others who use "Shock and Awe" when you do exactly the same thing. t It's the year of the Pig.
  10. Not where I live... t It's the year of the Pig.
  11. I had a Jonathan 120 from 1992 to 2002 (about 1500 jumps) and jumped it pretty much exclusively (Apart from Tandems and CRW rigs.) Quite simply, I loved it. It gave me great landings at 1.6+, 5000ft AMSL and 100+ deg F. The problem with them all being different was that relining and trim was always an issue for me. t It's the year of the Pig.
  12. In practical terms, the effect is huge. Our DZ is 5000ft AMSL, and often 100 deg + in the summer. Some days the post impact gymnastics from the 200 - 600 range jumpers is just amazing. It doesn't seem to affect me much, so maybe I have some "feel" dialed in and read it subconciously on the decent, and it doesn't seem to affect the students and very low time jumpers as their more conservative wing loading cushions them somewhat... but the inters who downsize mid summer? They are interesting to watch. t It's the year of the Pig.
  13. I paid $55 to jump a 727 at WFFC 1992. $65 seems like a bargain to me. t It's the year of the Pig.
  14. Front side bus? t It's the year of the Pig.
  15. You should follow the recomendations until you develop instincts, and then you should balance the two. I've been out as low as 1200ft from a plane that decended through cloud and had severe iceing issues on the wings and prop. I was on a CRW rig and had 750 "instant" delays on rigs like that. For me, the risk of jumping was lower than the risk of staying in the plane. On the type of dives you describe from the weekend, I'd be happy to go at 2000ft, unless I was wearing a wingsuit, in which case I would want 2500. t It's the year of the Pig.
  16. See. That's why I used the word "serious." Then you mention 3 german cars. t It's the year of the Pig.

There are a couple of things I like about Manual. When your battery is flat.. you can push it and start it. When you break down, you can tow it with a rope. It's way lighter on gas. It's way lighter on brakes. You have a variable means of how you apply power to the road surface through the clutch. You can pretty much fix it yourself - unlike automatic gearboxes. t It's the year of the Pig.

I was in the US earlier this month, and looking at car prices, and it seems to me that cars with a manual transmission cost more, so you may be right about that. t It's the year of the Pig.

You don't see it because it's not there. I don't like grey. t It's the year of the Pig.
  20. I'm not an American or a soldier, so I won't presume to have an answer for your question. I think that people know when there is a problem, and those people will always find a solution to that problem. The US was formed over just such a paradox. They did the right thing then, and I'm sure if called upon, would do the right thing again. t It's the year of the Pig.

What type of gearbox is in your car? t It's the year of the Pig.
  22. I don't think so. Most American cars have automatic transmission. Many, many Americans cannot drive a car with a manual transmission. No serious car is built without a manual transmission, with the possible exception of F1 cars due to the human frailties of requiring a gear change a second for 2 odd hours. t It's the year of the Pig.
