Birdman Suit from King Air Hop & Pop; Bird Man Instructor
Tonto replied to fortress913's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Please fill in your profile. There is a world of difference between someone on a competition CRW team with 3000 dives doing a hop and pop with 10 wingsuit dives, and someone with 210 dives, no hop and pops, and 10 wingsuit dives. Until I know where you fall on the scale, I can't give you an answer. t It's the year of the Pig. -

Ah. Active.. Look at the 50 year olds going for their annual medical that refer to themselves as "active" and in "excellent" health. We all like to think we're "active." I'm averaging over 230 dives a year for 22 years. The last calender month I never did a jump in was March 1987, and that's cos my femur was broken, but there are many, many skydivers more active than I am. I think it's all what you consider active. I'm a weekend only jumper, so 230 a year for 22 years indicated a degree of commitment, but I doubt I would be considered "active" by those who have 9000 dives in 10 years. t It's the year of the Pig.

Sam, I thought you'd know me well enough to know that I would not have used the Channel example if I never knew of that flight. He was a cyclist - not a weight lifter. This forum is just like any other. People beleive what they beleive, and resent others who do the same thing. Everyone who is "Tall and light" seems to want to beleive that they are genetically predisposed to being a better wingsuit pilot. That's not what I've seen in my experience. Edgar is tall and thin. You're kinda there, in a chunky way. Jules is certainly there, as is Timoty. All you guys fly a lot, and your peers have respect for your ability and experience. Gavin and Rainer have maybe 100 wingsuit dives between them, and fly an S1 and Classic respectively. They are not current or very experienced. They are both around 1.6 something though, and around 60 kg, and the numbers they post on those suits are numbers anyone in a modern suit would envy. There must be a reason for that. It can't be their experience. It can't be their currency. It can't be their modern gear. It must be something else. What do you think it is? t It's the year of the Pig.

Since this thread was opened with my being quoted, and with animals involved - I'll state whatever I feel like, thanks. You may feel that the industrial revolution and 100 years of mechanised flight opts us out of the food chain, but I disagree. We cannot escape our evolution. t It's the year of the Pig.

I like comparing apples and oranges. Since each person who climbs into a wingsuit is different in height, weight, body structure, age, fitness, experience, desire, imagination etc - we will ALWAYS be comparing apples and oranges. I just think that from what I have seen, small and light whips tall and thin every time, with the possible exception of flat out forward speed. t It's the year of the Pig.

So... how many 160lb flying snakes, or squirrils are there? A. Zero It's easier to get smaller things to fly than bigger things. You can argue that as much as you like, but I think we all know it to be true. There are millions and millions of flying creatures that weigh under 1lb, and none - not one - that weighs over 45. Argue all you like. It won't change that. As for birds not being "particularly strong" well, I guess it depends on how you define strength. They can't bench press much, but then no Olympic weight lifter has flown across the channel under their own power. They seem strong enough to fly unaided, and I'm not strong enough to do that, so I think they're stronger than I am. t It's the year of the Pig.

People smash themselves both ways. Toggle and riser. Both are tools. Both have different applications and different responses on different canopies. You shouldn't turn low regardless of the technique used, and any turn too low indicates an error in judgement that should be acnowledged by the pilot whether or not they got away with it. You should strive to understand and fly your canopy within it's full control range using all of it's inputs. The most dangerous part of the landing is the person in the harness. It's what YOU do that deternines the outcome. Not what technique you use. t It's the year of the Pig.

Female US Astronaut Arrested, Charged with Attempted Kidnapping

I was trained on C-9 and T-10 mains, with capewells. There was no cutaway in our procedure, and no pilot chute on our reserves. It went like this: 1. Tuck. (De-arch) 2. Left hand across reserve, right hand on reserve handle 3. Pull and throw (the reserve handle) 4. Right hand back in, then both hands open reserve container 5. Throw canopy down (and into the spin) In the event of a cutaway, 1. Look. (Which was odd, cos you couldn't see both at once) 2. Open (Dust covers) 3. Thumbs in! (to the 2 wire hoops that (sometimes) popped up) 4. Pull (Evenly, or only one side would release and you'd be fucked. 5. Get your thumbs out of the loops, and then start the procedure mentioned 1st. t It's the year of the Pig.

Wing suit flyer.. Height 6`6 feet – Weight 160 Pounds

Here, some ratings require 1000 dives and 10 hours of "documented freefall time." I had the 1st 1000 signed off by someone else. In 2005, checking into Perris, they were not happy that my last dive, done in Eloy ome 2 days before, was not signed. (Jump 4000 something) My SO singed it and they were happy. t It's the year of the Pig.

Wing suit flyer.. Height 6`6 feet – Weight 160 Pounds
Tonto replied to medusa's topic in Wing Suit Flying
Disagree. Q. How many biological flying creatures are there that weigh 160lbs? A. Zero "Heaviest Flying Birds The Kori Bustard or paauw (Ardeotis Kori) of northeast and southern Africa and the great bustard (Otis tarda) of Europe and Asia weigh about 40-42 pounds. There is a report of a 46 lb. 4 oz. male great bustard shot in northeastern China. It was too heavy to fly." http://www.victorialodging.com/birding/small_big_fast_slow.htm Of course, the lighter you are, the easier it is to fly, to the extent that bits of dirt (dust) are easy to see suspended in a sunbeam longer than you or I or any wingsuit pilot can fly, with no aerodynamics or skill what so ever. t It's the year of the Pig. -

Short (5'4") and light (100lbs) whips tall (6'6") and heavy. (160lbs) And it's all about the pilot anyway. We're individuals. Some people just "get tired" and quit long before others. t It's the year of the Pig. -
