Statistics bear out the fact the higher the jump numbers, the higher the incidents. It's a little thing called complacency. I used to jump without a helmut, i'd forget my altimeter periodacally, i even jumped out once with my goggles hanging around my kneck, that hurt! I'm guilty as well. I had an S&TA bring to my attention about 4 years ago at SDSM that dumping at 2K AGL probably wasn't a good idea. But back then all i wanted was the "Ground Rush" I never really thought i would / could pound in. Then i lost one of my best friends, Shane Richertz, then Chris Salin about three months later. The only thing standing between me and a "D" is the night jump. I'm NOT going to do it. I never stay pass sundown, and on a rare occasion stay there long enough for the sunset load. You really think that? What's the fastest you've ever had any car going on street pavement? Highway pavement? Believe me when i tell you a car's behaviour is radically different at a 25° bank turning to the left at 175 mph, then back into the throttle to 200 mph+ only to do it again in less than an 1/8 of a mile. I've got a new C-6 Corvette with an LS-2 350 CID W/ 400 HP (1/2 that of a Nextel Cup Car) @ 485 Ft/Lbs of torque at the rear wheels. I've had the car at exactly 199.00 MPH at Texas Motor Speedway, and on the highway where i live, at certain days, and certain times. I've had cross winds hit me going that fast, believe me, you've never sh*t your pants until a car like this gets "Loose" and pushes you through the corner at those speeds unexpectedly. Not just everybody can do it. NasCar has become a very complex, technical sport. The driver has to anaylize his car's behaviour and relay that information to his crew chief so he knows which adjustments to make. There are a select few driver's who can tell the crew chief what changes he wants. But they're retiring by the boatloads. Anymore the qualifications for a crew chief is he's got to have a mechanical engineering degree. In Ryan Newman's case, he's the one with the engineering degree, and Matt Boreland is just "Old School" Newman tells him which adjustments to make and Matt does it. Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace and Dale Jr. ar the only exceptions i know of right now.
