Need advice on video and camera gear
rwieder replied to NexGenSkydiver's topic in Photography and Video
This brings up a point i've been wanting to discuss for a while. While i have three camera helmets, and a number of camera suits, all different in equipment/lenses/ etc...There are no courses offered to teach/instruct vidiots. You basically learn by trail & error and hope not to injure yourself or anyone else while your at it. It seems to be one of the aspects of our sport that is being overlooked. Why? I don't know. IMO it's because we're so focused on Canopy Piloting Skills, or the lack thereof. I see A licensence holders get their license and immediately strap a camera on the side of their helmut without any formal training. It's often dealt with by turning a blind eye towards the practice. I would ask someone to step forward and offer some seminars, camps at the DZ or what ever to teach about the different types of equipment, suits, a beginning point and an ending point in videography, or what i refer to as skytography. Any thoughts? -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall" -
O.K. So the big bad evil mean DZO tried to make $200.00 USD off of a skydiving rig. "Get the rope!" At the end of the day, the owner of the rig just has to say either "Yes" or "No" i don't think starting a thread about some business transaction like this one should even be given any creedence. It's nonsense. IMO. The only thing the DZO did, that i wouldn't have done was to advise the seller that i would be making a $200.00 USD Profit. There's some things a man has just got to keep to himself.

I'm safe, but "Bring It" "Every Man Has GOT To Know His Limitations." But then again, i had the benifit of really good instructors at SDSL. Not a scratch, so far. The worst that's happenned to me so far is a sprained left ankle from a "Slammer Opening" on deployment while flying a 210^2 7 cell Triathlon canopy. (Thanks Brain) It hurt so bad, had to leave early that day due to the event. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall" -
His name is actually Mike Turoff. He is a e very learned TM1, AFF, USPA Coach, etc...etc...He was my examiner under the USPA Coach licenseing program at SDH in Waller, Texas. He is also one of the most experienced instructor's and examiners, TM1, AFF, etc...i've met in my skydiving career. Mike is also the Co-Author Of the book released by Mr. Tom Bunch, and himself, Skydiving Made Fun (Or Easy, can't remember which) Mike has run for the board of the USPA on different occasions, and in my opinion should be there now. (BUT, that's only good for me, as it's my opinion) Just wanted to clarify his name. Thanks. God Bless, Take Care. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

I've been there, done that. I know your pain.I'm sorry for your mom's & your loss. I'm more than certain it will take a while for the grievieng process to run it's course. Animals love unconditionally. You can be having a really horrible day, come home and your greeted by your pet, they smile at you and beg for your attention and they let you "inside" their souls. They hug you and kiss you, and all of the sudden things aren't so bad anymore.

One word: Alcohol It would seem this libation causes changes in personalities. It has known to alter egos and heighten tensions. Thus my reasoning for not visiting much anymore. I got really tired of being trashed, and trashing others as well. It's good to peruse for a while and just observe. Later. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

I still miss you to this day Shane. You were one crazy cat man. You are now flying with the rest of our friends with angels that have joined you since you passed. I know this is 6 days late, but i did not forget. I won't forget again. Take care up there bro, and look out for the low timers. "Thanks for the memories." God Bless My friend, i'll see you in heaven when i get there. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

God know's that's the oldest one in the book. But in the event of an incident, i don't think the investigating committe would get a laugh out of it. As it should be. I'm not going to say i haven't done it. But it is ery careless and inconsiderate to others as well as your self. You know who you are! And THANKS. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

Why would we do that? Fidel probably freaking croaked. His brother, Raul is full fledged commie. He won't do anything but start more BS. Ya gotta remember that Cuba & S.A. are allies. Hugo Chavez is a PITA. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

You sure are. Your nothing more than a number and a $ to the IRS. Hopefully this isn't a revelation. There is no law anywhere that states you have to pay taxes on wages for your LABOR. Now if you own a business, or have other revenue, that's a different story. It is how ever mandatory that you file, but you do not have to pay taxes for your labor compensation. Basically all you have to do is file, and if you owe $$$ tell them to basically "Drop Dead" when they retort. The IRS operates by fear, and intimidation, threats and the like. They prey upon the worker's ignorance to get them to pay. They send threatning letters, they threaten to place liens on this and that and the other. It's all a bunch of BS. I've owned, and operated my own businesses for over 25 years, actually i own 4 different entities all together. I pay myself a salary, that i do not pay taxes on. Because i won my own business, everything i buy to operate my businesses is 90% tax deductable ie: ADVERTISING, my work truck, employees vehichles, i get to have two personal vehichles to write off. I pay my taxes quarterly. At the end of the year, if i owe say $25K-$30K, i simply invest in something, or make a "Capitol Improvement" The best thing for everyone to do is research this whole topic, learn what they know and use it to your advantage, within your rights. And employ a really good CPA! Good Luck! -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

Agreed, already addressed. That sounds like good advice. But i'ts never happened to me before. Again that doesn't mean it can't happen. What kind of plug would you suggest? I've got a Hakuba "Quick Shoe" Mount on the still on the Optik, & The FTP. I've never had anything snag the still on the Optik, but i have been bitch slapped on the left side of my head where the camcorder is, That sucks, i gaurentee it. (Chest strap too tight) It's the third one i've ever flown, you should have seen the Bat-Rak i started with. I fly the Optik for fun actually. The quick release system on the Optik is a red cable that completely releases the chin strap. The Optik is much lighter than the FTP as well. I'm going to order some black straps, just had those in my junk box actually. The Optik has the two black straps as well, you just can't see them as well. I've never flown with that lens. I had all of my lenses out for all of my cameras, and i was just fooling around with that, forgot it was in there when i took the pics. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

The Cut-Awat systen, no because it's a brand new FTP and has the advanced cut-away system on it. I've already been in a hanging harness, and intentionally entangled it around the ringsight, and was still able to cut-away my FTP w/ ease. (Mind you now, i' NOT saying it cannot happen) No, i havent. But i will consider your advice. Actually i'm more concerned about the "Bitch Slap" on the left side on my camera (Illusion) from my risers than anything. I haven't had any bad experiences w/ the FTP as of yet. Your advice is welcomed, and i appreciate the fact that you are looking out for me. Have a great evening, and be safe! And "Thank You" for your learned advice, i am always receptive to it! -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"

O.K. the first pic is not a camera helmet, it's a new 2008 Z-06, it's way faster than freefall! The other pics are of my Optik Illusion & My new FTP i just finished assembling. I use a bite switch on the illusion, and a thumb switch on the FTP. No ring sight on the Illusion, but have just installed one on the FTP and have it "Dialed In" No fancy paint jobs or loads of chrome, but functional. -Richard- "You're Holding The Rope And I'm Taking The Fall"
