    I can put some perspective on this. I have flown and skydived a lot. Not that I would ever admit to flying under a bridge or power lines, but if I did, it would be fairly simple and does not require a lot of skill. You establish a trajectory towards the opening and you hold it. Linear. It is easy to miss a solid object when you dont have to factor in an a parabola that is energy and altitude dependent. Doing a split S, http://www.rapp.org/archives/2004/01/thunderbird_crash/ is far more dangerous due to the fact that you have to peg the maneuver seconds before the accuracy counts. Doing a low level split S is the most dangerous thing a pilot can do. I would rather fly through that hole than do a low level split S. Oh yeah, a low level split S is exactly the same thing as a hook turn. --
