I am totally with you on this, fortunately I realized early in my career once I got to abotu 1.6 on the wingloading that I needed to watch what every one else was doing figure out canopy sizing roughly on the plane set up exit order acordingly where we could and then abort to if needed even a straight in landing (done twice) I had great mentors when I started and learned good habits...I dont jump at a dz where we can truly split the landing area...we can only really designate a swooping lane as a non regular jumper landing area...and we are currently working on our system of dealing with said issue, so far we have done a great job of self policing ourselves, but with some up and coming swoopers with like 200 swoops, jumping larger canopies and not having the experience yet, we are starting to think how we can fix this problem before it becomes a problem Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

I would fully support measures as such I support the ideas that Brian Germain has set forth to the USPA (although I certainly didnt fit into them early in my career) I also like the ideas that some of the scandenavian countries have placed into effect where up till 500 jumps you have to follow specific guidelines Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

How winds affect canopy flight...

mr mike speaks better english than me most of the time... and its funny but perhaps I will throw more into the mix... perhaps when it is windy the density altitude changes due to a pressue system change occuring which would add to said same altitude change Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
hmmmm this sounds like the beginning of a political debate about who owns Icarus now... Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

short recovery arc canopy and consistency
dharma1976 replied to 2shay's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I much prefer the crossfire 2 to the canopy you are flying... in fact I never really liked the stilletto...but that is me...somethign ab out the openings... if you want something that is good to learn to swoop on can I reccomend a sabre 2 or safire 2...I learned most of what I know abotu swooping on those canopies...(except for rear riser landings which I learned on my 129 crossfire) just my 2cents Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
read brian germains book 7 times and then find a mentor at a DZ near you that does have swoopers... my advice is wait until you have a few more jumps...I didnt and I have the titanium to prove it...and yes I thought I was different too... and so did this guy.... http://www.dropzone.com/...20Velo%2090;#1125853 and he was my friend...I swoop I love swooping and I would say that it will have its time in your skydiving career...but how long do you want your skydiving career to be http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

short recovery arc canopy and consistency
dharma1976 replied to 2shay's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Yeah your canopy is simlar to a stilletto, you might want to try either of the following... a. add harness when you initiate your turn to ease up on your riser pressure... b. try some longer risers to increase your recovery arch... c. get some coaching, nothing helped me more than working with brian germain for like 3 days Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
ahhhh that is one of my favorite lines...seriously its in big bold letters in the beginning of the high performance section of Brian Germains book "A parachute and its pilot" and I like it a lot Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

regardless the 30 day money back gaurentee still works if you buy from a dealer... or in my case I just asked for a replacement canopy Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

By what reference do you initiate your approach?
dharma1976 replied to LearningTOfly's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
truthfully it is a altitude check points on altimeter and then all visual once turn to final comes on D http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
I have a feeling that Wind Tunnels and Jet Airplanes are higher on the priority list than a nice safe LARGER landing area... Then I would say this...having jumped there and know what you are talking about... go to Taft north of LA, its super chill, go to Elsinore, I hear it is super chill... if you are uncomfortable with the size of the nice landing area at perris, go somewhere else where they focus on taking care of said same landing are or at least have less jumpers in the plane... Cheers and Blue skies Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

I think that article talks about how the relative wind comes from ones ass after eating sushi dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
dude you r nice section of landing area is smaller than the ranch swooppond... no wonder... I always wondered at thyat after having been at Perris.. especially with that hardpack desert cocoa shit you call surounding area... can you just say ouch... so yeah everyone tries to land on the grass which is tiny... of course you are goign to have issues. how about maybe getting a little more grass up in that joint eh... Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

That is precisely my concern. I have no control over someone elses decisions. Thus anyone with an A license can come along and take me out. And so as not to leave the experienced people out of the loop, anyone with a D license and 5000 jumps can take me out also. hmmmm sounds like you are spooked man...the truth is even if you ban swooping from the main landing area someone can still kill you there or otherwise.... I think the trick is to maybe self police more and really try to keep those X jump wonders in the real know and keep teaching them not to do stupid shit and try to teach them how to do it instead of how to fuck someone up...otherwise if we talk about banning things you just make other problems... Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

technically speeking a hook turn is a turn low to the ground that hurts you or someone else other wise it is a high performance landing Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

its like that time I figured out cold fusion while on acid D http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
you know whats funny the clause in my will that states what my mother knows... that if I burn in in a skydiving accident there is to be no suing or the entire amount of my holdings goes to someone else...(of course that means that my ashes get thrown out of a plane instead of being buried as well which would freak her more than the money) cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

How winds affect canopy flight...
dharma1976 replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
oh yeah and the wind to the top skin thing is a fallacy the relative wind to the canopy is always coming from the nose side...so the whole if you turn into the wind the wind makes your canopy dive faster is not true... not sure if anyone stated that in here but I thought I would throw in that 17 and 1/2 cent piece Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
How winds affect canopy flight...
dharma1976 replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
why oh why is Brian Germain tied up in Norway right now :-P According to Brian (and I think Scott Miller would agree) the only thing that changes is our drift/ our perception to or dive. so we are still losing the same amount of height, just in a different fashion... Now perhaps psychologically we adjust to the change in sight picture and subconsciously change our turn completely thereby making us think that our turn is different, but if we threw down the same turn (adjusting for horizontal drift) in winds that we do in no wind or down wind our vertical descent is the same... Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
I know people who do it with freeflying so that they are somewhat focused on that and fly more relaxed as they are not thinking as much abotu what they are doing , just doing it Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.
