  5. being a life long native New Yorker i can attest to the fact that for MANY... the ranch IS upstate... Really,, for all those people, who live in metro NY City or on the ISland.. ANYthing above westchester is UPstate hahahaha.. true... but as CMiller points out, there are hundreds and hundreds of miles MORE,, to the north and west.... north through the adirondacks and up to Malone, and west,,,, through the finger lakes, and into rochester and buffalo... The OP didn't provide a location, so it's tougher to answer the question.. like MANY things,,, it's ALL Relative.. but there are Lots of GOOD dropzones in NY. jt
  6. well done, everyone...Congrats, VideoFly if you are a person who is reading this sticky.... now please take the time to read the posts which DSE has noted....if you've NOT already done so... lots of smart, intuitive and sensible suggestions have been made...Our community LEARNS by Sharing..... ( very very UNlike many many other things in life and/ or work.. where people stay closed-mouthed, and secretive... ) thanx Spot, for encouraging the concept, that each of us CAN help, one another... safety first, and what the hell, safety second too... jmy a 3914 d 12122
  7. I want to live to be an old skydiver! oh, wait... congratulations!!!! You made it... well i sure like to THINK that i'm NOT old... . . . ... and we'll just leave it at that.....
  8. it's in New york state the finger lakes are a series of parallel fresh water lakes,,, formed by retreating ice slabs, during the most recent 'ice age'...they range in length up to 50 or 60 miles, and in width up to 10 - 12 miles... not sure but there could be maybe a dozen of them.... North to south travel in the area is not an issue,, but east to west can be a pain, as it's necessary to drive all the way to the north or south end,, in order to reach a place that could be only 15 miles away,,,, as the bird flies... very popular for summertime water activities, and winter time ice fishing.. Many of the lakes have year round homes along the shorelines. but some of the lakes are designated as drinking water reservoirs...so NO houses... The OP did PM me, and his intent is NOT nefarious... we communicated and there's no mystery AT ALL here... trust me... jmy
  9. molten metal????? or Jet A ????? weren't both those plane loaded with fuel, in consideration of flight plans which had them bound for the west coast??? just wonderin'... jt

  11. great... many more to follow... and a happy holiday season to YOu and yours, as well duroejc... wasn't that a formation flight?? that we shared??? yes yes.. i can still SEE it clearly in my minds' eye...that lead 182 just "hanging" there... (we were in the chase plane flown by Dick,,, from Malone)
  12. yeah..... cold..... MAYBE in terms of air temperature.. and maybe this time of the year.... but WARM,,, even HOT ... in terms of the Vibe, the camaraderie, the shared knowledge, the weekly BBQ dinners, and the love that floats around the place... "wild" bill??..... hahahah normiss.. !!! well I KNOW (at least ) a couple of ' wild Bills' ....here and there... but yeah there IS one o' those , there too.... as well as a good handful of OTHER "notorious" and 'infamous' characters..... every DZ needs at least a half a dozen or so......of such types... The stories we could Tell!!! jmy
  13. WONDERFUL Bunch of people.. the DZO has been dedicated to this sport for OVER 35 years...he's a pilot , a Rigger , a USPA Instructor, and a fine person...holds many credentials and MOST importantly the RESPECT of everyone within this geographic area....IF you know him,,, you would agree.... ...so committed is he,,, to our sport,,,,, ,,, that when other places were shutting down, in the area... HE went out and BOUGHT an airport and selflessly gave of his knowledge, energy, time and $$$$$$$, to make it the SAFE and FUn place...that it is today, and that it HAS BEEN for almost THREE decades...He singlehandledly made it possible for dozens and dozens of experienced skydivers to have a dropzone at which to jump... wanna know More???? PM me....I'll give ya' the straight scoop on the place.... IF I were to take a FAMILY member and a loved one,, out to make a tandem skydive....THAT is the place we would be visiting.... For ME>>>>> it's worth the hour and a half drive.... well worth it... jimmytavino
  14. cool... by then the cost of High Def camcorders will likely DROP>>>> about 50 percent... sorta like high def TVs have done .. and when you're ready..... there may even be quality HD equipment. small enough to side mount...
  15. to the OP it's not a one hundred yard DASH it's a marathon...
  16. well said.... the rotation concept can work well....In theory... BUT it does fail to address the issue of Seniority.......... and frankly that can be unfair to those videographers who HAVE "paid their dues" and put in the time and devoted of themselves and their bank accounts,,, to gear up and BE THERE.....consistantly while i DO appreciate the need for up and comers to be welcome,, and have always tried to be helpful that way... I also remember that when i started i was Always willing to stand down to those camera persons who were there , before me....if for nothing else, than to show I was not a know- it - all or a demanding team member...I figured that at some point,,, my time would come...This was before we went onto a rotation system.... ( which ONLY became necessary when SOME people began grousing about..... " He's getting or She's getting, More work than I'm getting".... it does help a bit,,,,,When the senior staff people become willing to Share the workload with newcomers and are willing to stand down once in a while... BUT everyone is different... If there are issues, and mumbling and grumbling by the 'long timers',,,, then that disharmony can really hurt the cameraderie factor on a dz... it comes down to individuals, being considerite... just like jtval........ signed jt..vino
  17. Balloon was pretty cool..... and years ago @ Quincy Ill. i got to jump a Boeing 727 Jet!!! THREE times in one day!!!! Honest... ... i had bought a lift ticket for jet load # 2... and joined some guys from south dakota for a 6 way..( Bob Roach, is a name that sticks in my mind).... and THEN some pals asked me to video their 10 way speed star team... so I got another ticket for that... ( well worth the $$$) mid afternoon... and THEN....... we were dirt diving a twenty way which was a tandem ( TM was from CAL... Harley was his name, ( r.i.p. ) student was a woman who had made 20 or more tandems, with him,, she was a para-palegic who Loved to skydive...) the plan was to build a 20 way around her... The L . O. was Buddha and we all had tickets for an Otter Load... .....WELL>>>> a staff person comes over and says, to the L O . " hey the last jet load is boarding now,,, and they are LIGHT, about 70 jumpers... wanna Put YOUR load in the Jet!?????" hahaha.. honest... well we hustled over there, with nothin' but 16 dollar Otter tickets, and they put us on it.... we hit the cloud ceiling at 11-five, and so got out there.. built to around 15 or so...
  18. congratulations.......... To one Jimmy T from another jimmy T
  19. yes.. i see your point. we don't become experienced,,, Til we experience something... But understanding THAT there WILL be a certain noticable acceleration, mostly down, but depending on "throw", sometimes down and sidewards.... ..can go a long way to Expecting such a phenomenon..... and properly 'riding it out' as the reserve ripcord is pulled. That's what i meant by saying it's helpful to anticipate that momentum change,, at the instant of the breakaway. jmy A 3914
  20. once again, thanks for the website pilotdave... yes, the camera person was completely ineffective, though maybe, the intentions were good.. might have been best to square off to the instructor and "encourage" a reserve pull..with visual or audible cues..... I noticed that the Drogue bridle seems awfully thin...... i guess i am used to seeing much heavier and wider bridles... What rig was that? does it use a "kill line" to collapse the drogue??/ it can't be determined for certain from the video that the reserve completed its opening,,,, it looks like the drogue was well involved with the suspension lines from the reserve... it's hoped that all went well.... great video, for the purposes of intitiating discussion... jmy A 3914 D 12122
  21. never have used an RSL but have done a few cutaways.... Lots of times people may forget to initiate the proper body position,,, BEFORE cutting away... especially novice and intermediate skydivers.. they all get so carried away with... look look grab peel pull pull that they forget to anticipate the release of the risers,,, and just HOW their Bodies will come away from it... A release from 3 rings,,, works best if one, gets their legs and feet Back & Up, i.e.... Arches!!! so that they go basically belly to earth just prior to the introduction of the reserve pilot chute...... whether THAT occurs by virtue of the RSL or by pulling silver... Tuck up or get your knees UP,,, and sure!!!! it's a LOT more likely that you'll roll or pivot or Tumble,,, Just at that point when you want your reserve to go straight UP,, unimpeded by your body your helmet ( cameras) or any part of your harness/container... Adherance to establishing the right body position will go a LONG way to limit, tumbling after the chop.... Another concern is that Momentary UH Uh Uh UH !!!!! factor,,, where by there is hesitation,, ( Not Pilot chute hesitation ),, but stress induced delay.... between when the main leaves and the reserve is pulled..... depending on how fast the jumper is descending while UNDER the mal.... that delay can eat up HUndreds of feet in a hurry,, I'd rather see a pilot chute be self-triggered regardless of body postion, At A LOW altitude than to see someone fail to react quickly enough themselves,,, to get the silver handle out..While it's never wise to be REALLY low,, without having already dealt with a malfunctioned main,,,sometimes jumpers DO find themselves cutting away UNDER a grand.... we can run outta time REAL fast...in that sort of situation... there are many pros and cons... however for students, or 'casual' skydivers, or those whose reflexes are slowing down..... an RSL could be a good idea... If one chooses Not to use an RSL.. Best to pack carefully, pull a bit higher, anticipate keenly, and react properly in order to justify the decision to forego this helpful tool.... ...and Think Hard about the Pre-cutaway body positon..as a foundational step in your EPs..... jmy
  22. just as pay and bounses can be 'direct deposited' into the accounts of these charlitans.. can't direct withdrawals Now be made from those same accounts??? or other accounts of the same social security Number??? soas to 'recoup' such compensation,,,,, which was now found to be 'undeserved'...and ill advised.... i KNOW it's not very likely, and then there would be allll the fighting about WHO pays what... and How Much.. and who GETS what,, and How much>.. But that secenario would be my christmas wish...and in all fairness,,, WOULD be appropriate.... YES??? NO??? jt
