  1. welcome.... regardless of where you complete your AFF,,,know this........... you'll get along alot better better on most dropzones if you concentrate on the SKYDIVING,, and don't let yourself get soooo distracted by the Women!!!!!. ( as evidenced by your posts) Horn dogs make lousy students..I've seen hundreds of 'em come and go... There is tooo much inportant stuff which you need to be learning,,, so that you can participate in OUR sport safely. Stay properly prioritized...... jmy ....o[:-)
  2. ... be darn careful when you land,,, If the smoke is still billowing....or even if it's spent. That sucker will be hot. you can burn your gear, or burn your landing area,,, In fact be prepared for small bits of residue staining your main...... ( soot , and other nasty stuff.) this can happen real easily during your descent..... I haven't worn a boot bracket in 30 years,,,, but I never cared for 'em.... Make sure you rig a line to a point that you can reach, which will enable you to get rid of the bracket if necessary.... depending on how long the cannisters burn, they could become an issue when you land.. for sure have ground crew on hand with a metal bucket and heavy gloves, to help you remove and contain the spent cannisters... ( Hot !!!! )
  3. At this point in your jumping career Jeth, as long as you have chosen to go with the RSL, it's probably for the best....as evidenced by the fact that everything worked out. The rsl is designed primarily with LOW altitude cutaways in mind... i . e. NO wasted time between release and reserve... Your situation ( High Altitude mal ) poses an interesting scenario. I think you should not be spending Any time to try to disconnect the rsl, before the cutaway.... though it would be nice to utilize some of the altitude to reestablich yourself in freefall before the reserve pull,,,, assuring yourself that you are clear of the bad main..... But then again.. i would NOT advocate getting going all the way back up to terminal,, and then pulling the reserve..( though you were moving pretty fast already ) a slower deployment speed for a reserve makes sense to me...... even if it means that you're open at 6 or 7 grand....Taking it down soas to "get back" to the dz ... is not something I might do. (Unless i was injured, and knew it. i.e. dislocated shoulder) We have to be confident in our abilties to safely accomplish an 'off-field' landing,,,, every time... hell we used to do it all the time with low performance round canopies,,, no reason a ram air can't be 'tamed down' so that it can be landed ANYwhere.... a good consideration when deciding on wing loading..... I suppose, that by muscle memory you should have continued your E P's and pulled the reserve handle even though the rsl had already put you into opening shock... still... thanks to the heads up from Al everything left you.. like it should, when you pulled the 3 ring release...
  4. glad you landed safely You mentioned a couple of things which got my attention.... First..... the heads UP play by "Al"... that was a good move to get to your Pilot Chute handle and "negate" the horseshoe.... especially since it was done at a high altitude.... If the p c stayed in the pouch,,, AND you then cutaway,,, the RSL would have put your reserve out,,,, while you still had your main, 'nearby'... Granted the cutaway might have extracted the P C, as the risers and dbag left you,,, but the INSTANT reserve container opening could have made it interesting..... Good Job AL... 2. towing that d bag gave you a great chance to see just how Fast you fall while under that sort of mal,,,, probably Faster than belly to earth freefall, since you're in a stand-up,, with just about ZERO drag....so well done..... yeah a cutaway main that's still in the bag,, AND is waaay waaay upwind from the DZ... could be anywhere... bummer.... the handle(s) and freebag can be replaced, I guess.. But I'd consider printing some flyers and posting them if the area is residential,,, if the area is wooded or swampy or remote.... then your main might be gone....... If it IS found ,,, hopefully the finder will know that there is a parachuting Center nearby and will return it.. good luck. jmy
  5. wow.... well then i guess it is a good Idea that the Chief Instructor @ our club ordered and had delivered about 2,000 gallons of Jet A on August 31st...... good move... " too bad the Dow Jones Ind. Average doesn't climbbbbbb the way gasoline prices have...." To Quote Al Pacino in some old movie, whose title I forget,,, " Somethin' Reallllly Realllly WRONG!! Is going On around here!!!!!" \ It was the flick where he is a lawyer and is defending some scumbag judge, who is played by John Forsythe.. .... help me w/ the title..??.
  6. . . . . first car i owned was a 1958 Ford 2 door.. 3 speed on the column... the wiring harnesses caught fire and burned up.. while it was parked in the driveway.. ( gift from a family member ) ( not the FIRE,,, ... the CAR !!) ..So the first car i ever bought!!!! was a 1963 Chevy Belair,, Blue, 4 door 283 V8. automatic 2 speed.. Paid 300 bucks for it... it got me through High School & college... Made many a trip to the dropzone , back in the day...
  7. Alas.. poor Gilligan..... .... I knew him when he was Maynard.. Maynard G Krebs,, ( "the G stands for Walter" ) from Dobie Gillis... circa late 50's early 60's... Maynard was TV's first "Cool Daddio" !!!! he put the BEAT in Beatnik.. Funk & Wagnalls....... beatnik informal .. A non-conformist, or bohemian, of the 1950's... R.I.P. Bob Denver
  8. ..baloney.. that makes NO sense... what's Up with that instructor....??? Is he trying to scare the student??? trying to impress the student???... either way... that's a dumb thing to say... .....and the absolute wrong image to put into a student's head..... how counterproductive... It's the sort of macho bullshit, often spouted by the scaredy cats of the sport, and usually while riding a barstool trying to impress some whuffos. I can't see ANY self respecting instructor saying THAT...
  9. Agreed.... he intervenes in things which are none of his business. muddies up the waters. accomplishes little more than pressing his own personal agenda and making the misassumptiuon that he 'speaks for all Americans" however.... calling him a moron while accurate, IS in violation of one of the rules here..... no personal attacks....
  10. hmmmm In the natural world there are many animals who "do nothing" yet survive and indeed triumph..... Certain predators lie in hiding till the prey carelessly approaches.. and then Bang!!! dead prey. Spiders, Insects, felines, gators, other reptiles, certain fishes, heck the angler fish even carries its' own "lure".... Can't the giants of military strategy recognize the benefit.. of preparation, anticipation, giving the look of vulnerabilty, but then springing the trap!!!!!!?? Let the "bad guys" do their thing or attempt to do their thing, exposing themselves in the process,,, and then smite them before their plan is carried out, in a sharp and final way......soas to discourage those who may follow them....?? til they are worn down to submission??? But go running off (as g w Bush did, into Iraq) creating havoc, drawing attention to yourself, KILLING in a way that may seem patriotic to your allies but is seen as hostile and aggresive by your victims..... and you can piss off alot of people...sometimes, people who have Absolutely NOTHING to lose...... Terrorists????? well hell,, what would you call an Invading army which is firing state of the art laser guided weapons with pinpoint accuracy, into all sorts of buildings and installation sites.. killing thousands and thousands..miltary or civilian, in a part of the world they have no business being.?? A politician from one of the areas hard hit by Katrina was quoted as saying, " New Orleans looks like downtown Baghdad"..... I wonder if Mother nature is spanking US.. right in our own backyard..... as payback for an ill conceived war which was predicated on what we have since learned to be FALSEhoods, lies, and exaggerations..... Now... when $$$$ is needed to restore sanity to those areas hit by the hurricaine.... the answer seems to be,,,,, "congress will simply authorize billions of dollars in aid...." Great... if we were not ALREADY Trillions of dollars , In the hole....... Damn... what a mess......
  11. My work van... Ford 3/4 ton 13 mpg ... My jumping van Chevy 1 Ton... 14 mpg... My wifes' chevy Impala 4 door 26 mpg.... Daughters' toyota corolla .... 23 mpg.... Son's Honda accord .... 24 mpg... I get to pay the citco charge card bill EVERY month either way... Once in a while they WILL say, " thanks Jim or thanks dad !"... gotta love family... all the necessities of life.. Times FOUR...
  12. . . . . ...WOW.... that is definately the absolute top contender for R O T Y .... "Rant Of The YEAR!!!! ...... where???? did that come from??????
  13. Nope.. sounds like you did just fine.... you're a good friend...
  14. sorry ...but I don't follow you here.... Bag lock?? or total???... to my line of thinking a bag lock would be,,, pilot chute inflated and lifting,, D bag outta the container but d bag staying "locked" cause it tumbled or cause the suspension lines hung up on a stow, or cause the bridle somehow entangled w/ the d bag....... so when you say that at landing the "d bag fell out" it makes me think "pc in tow".. ie total..( the container is closed OR the bag "stuck",), ( inadequate p c drag...) .........So if it's a total or a pc in tow,,, (which exerts NO force on the risers) and if the rig has riser covers,, when you "disconnect" at the 3 rings,,,how in the world is that rsl riser able to trigger the reserve...? wouldn't it be likely to stay in place??? I sure Hope that you went to your reserve handle, instinctively, and pulled it ANYWAY!! right?? .... if you did... then it looks like you did the right thing.. ...When you landed had the 3 rings of BOTH risers fully released from the large ring(s) on the harness... or just the side which activated your rsl..?? .jmy...a3914 d12122
  15. .... Yes.. same thing Here....we listen to it on the car radio, while driving to dinner.
