Ellen DeGeneres Under Fire for Giving Away Dog
jimmytavino replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
hmmmm kinda sad. She does a good thing to "adopt ' the dog.. -
One of Burt Lancasters' roles,, that i liked so much.. Doctor "Moonlight" Graham....... I can still see his wingtipped shoes stepping across the foul line..... "This child's chokin' on a hot dog. She'll be turning handsprings before you know it" Plus i have Loved Amy Madigan ever since i saw her in the "supporting" role of Ray's Wife... sticking up for Ray after Beulahs quote ,,, "well at least I'm Not married to the biggest horses' ASS in 3 counties"..... great story... plus baseball has always been a favorite of mine,,,,, Playing it.. NOT watching it... jmy the outfielder

thanks... sounds encouraging...and DSE , i do pretty good with things that hard to mess up. and ' not bad ' with lots of other things... one of which is listening to advice.. I'll check the manual for the 1000 and break it out of storage... Does anyone know if the PC series and TRV series of Sony mini dv camcorders offer interval recording???..any other models??? also,, Can i pivot the camera at all during the recording????? I ask because there may be two main areas of attention,,, My plan is to time lapse the complete removal of a Huge and (formerly ) stately Oak tree, which is located at my father's house... it's starting to lean and the trunk is failing, and so sadly it needs to be taken safely to the ground... The trunk is 44" in diameter and the foliage is extensive.... anyway the plan is to carefully trim, cut and lower sections to the ground. A bucket truck and crane will be on site. the timber, and usable logs will be moved to another location on the property, for eventual processing into firewood... The 'dump site ' for the wood... is the second area of interest that i mentioned... Will the entire feel of the time lapse fail... if i move the view???? If i don't move the view,,, Can i zoom at all in the course of a 'record' phase??.. I can keep the tripod in the same place AND catch both the tree and the 'off load' site by simply panning back and forth.....I plan to set up maybe 200 feet from both sites... the tree is maybe 80 or 90 feet tall It'll be tough to see that Big tree come down. It has sheltered and shaded the house which my dad Built in 1950, for all the years that the family has been there... Now it's susceptible to high winds, and if gravity ever got it it would crush most of the house... so it has to come down soon it will warm the house, as it becomes fuel for the wood stove in the family room how does tripod mount time lapse work around the DZ??? is it sensible?? maybe in the landing area?? the boarding area??/ a takeoff or landing?? i dunno.... something to play with... skydive safely jmy

Staying Current Vs. Years In Sport
jimmytavino replied to tonka's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
it takes a good bit of BOTH... "years in the sport" should better read as "years spent ON the DZ" soaking up knowledge....... Simple Time in the sport is not as effective if that time is not spent AT the dz... watching, listening, asking questions, and growing knowledge..... We can learn lots around the campfire.... ( no, not THAT sort of knowledge) but before it gets tooo far past "Beer thirty" we CAN listen and hear about technical things, and different procedures and new techniques.... so years in the sport helps.... IF we use those years wisely.. Staying current. to me means "making lots of jumps"... and THAT is where we implement what we have learned.... so currency gives us true feedback, and helps us differentiate from 'good' advice and 'bad' advice... check with instructors, and senior jumpers to be sure about any new and different advice.. so sure... BOTH is best... -
any helpful tips or suggestions for shooting time lapse,,, ( interval recording ) footage.??? I would like to compress maybe 8 hours of "real time".. down to maybe one hour... I plan to tripod mount the video camera. I have a sony VX 1000 which can do interval recording..... and can be set at various intervals... i'd like it not to look tooooo choppy and hope the finished video would be catch most of the activity of the "event"... any suggestions??? thanx jmy

.. absolutely perfect First Jump Course... perfect... even had liberal use of the chalk board.... and viewed by jumpers of the day,, as even MORE funny when compared to the many many Looong -winded Instructors of the time..... ( i can recall a couple of static line first jump courses where the Instructors went on and on and on, until suddenly it was too late in the day to JUMP !!!..) hahahah.. ( As fun jumpers, we were happy to have the plane...) But Truman Sparks was NOT long winded... he ran on the "Keep It Simple Stupid " principle and he Inspired... " hey man, you do THAT on the real thing and You're gonna bounce "..... Plus it was a cool pilot move, to fly that plane UNDER the expressway bridge..... good pictures,, looks like a 172.. or maybe even a 150??? jmy

What to do with your helmet on takeoff?
jimmytavino replied to Skydave103's topic in Photography and Video
" is simply asking for your neck to be broken" hmmmm valid point, i guess... my logic is that the protection ( to myself AND everyone in the cabin) afforded by wearing it...may outweigh the 'risk' of the extra G's... should a problem come up..... but now i dunno..... Not sure what the forces are like when comparing, a slammer opening @ 125 mph.. to a flared emergency aircraft touchdown at 50 60 or 70 MPH.... I've endured many such openings and so far ZERO such landings... if time exists, to brace for such a landing, however, i think my hands would be solidly ON the helmet, adding some degree ( i hope ) of protection from having my head fall off..... What's worse???? that scenario, ( braced for touchdown) or crashing with No head protection at all... AND a helmet flapping around on a chest strap....or harness or seatbelt... I suppose the size shape and strength of a persons neck, shoulders and arms, may factor in, as well.....some are more solid than others,,, anyway thanks for the 'food for thought'... aw hell...... maybe I'll just leave the cameras on the ground!!! .. cause now i'm not sure what's the best idea.... will be following this thread. for sure. thanks all,,, for the thought provoking comments... j t a 3914 d 12122 -
Should minimum recommendations apply to you?
jimmytavino replied to skybytch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
using the "old skydiver/bold skydiver" philosophy... i have always felt that it's better to EXTEND...... minimum requirements,,, for myself... than it was , to reduce or ignore them. others may do as they choose... a skydiving career should be a marathon, not a 100 yard dash..... there is soooo much to try, to learn, to experience, to enjoy,,,,,,, better to go at a safe and sensible pace, than to have the "whole enchilada".... fast fast fast..... Prodigies Do exist....and are amazing to behold..but they need mentoring/coaching/guidance,, as do any 'instant experts', in a field... mentors must explain, AND enforce the common sense minimums which our sport has self-established, over decades and decades of trial and error..... lets work to keep the errors at ZERO... .... if we possibly can. skydive safely jmy -
What to do with your helmet on takeoff?
jimmytavino replied to Skydave103's topic in Photography and Video
i was always taught that if you HAVE headgear.. then you WEAR it,,, secured,,,, for take off..... can't get much simpler.... IF you have to,,,,, you should be able to record,,, while it's on your head...... after seatbelts come off and the plane is trimmed and climbing,, there is plenty of time for either hand holding the whole assembly, or removing the camera from the helmet,,, to get some good "in the plane" footage, close-ups, novelty shots, etc... ( Just be sure to zoom back out to wide angle,,, if you are in the back of a plane, and you zoomed to the TM and Student, who might be further up the cabin,,, near the pilot...) the idea is to prevent the situation, where anything is flying around the cabin,,,, missle-like,,,, in the rare event of an emergency.. seatbelts save lives....helmets which are worn,,,protect heads .. I does bug me to see camera people hand holding anything during take off....and despite the desire to do so,,, I resist out of consideration to all those on board... because while this sport gives us lots of leeway, for "self-expression" and "doing our own thing".. that is not a license to flaunt safety recommendations..... jmy -
Randall P MacMurphy..... a true great character in cinema history. well played by J Nich. very very good film it's so tough to name one film... Moby Dick with Richard Basehart and Gregory Peck had my vote when i was younger...filmed in the early 60's it had adventure, the fury and agony of the oceans, the character of Queequeg.. who spoke by his actions... and accuracy with a harpoon... It was one of the first movies i saw in "technicolor" I also really liked Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch.. in To Kill A Mockingbird...excellent but sad story. speaking of Color,,, and transitioning from Black and White.. gotta say The Wizard of Oz.....the first time anyone sees that movie,,, they must admit, it makes an impression on them... The Wicked Witch, scared hundreds of thousands of little kids,,,,in the decades that it has been a favorite...

yes.. me too....but not for the 'singles' off their albums though some of them are great.... i liked alll the rest of the tracks even the obscure songs... from great albums like threshold of a dream, every good boy deserves favor, octave, question of balance..... very very good...and when they played with symphony orchestras !!!!! amazing... Next best......Jethro Tull..... c'mon now..... how many bands have such an accomplished Floutist ( sp) , as ian anderson ( sp? ) ?? mixed with acoustical guitar and sometimes driving elec. guitar... and keyboards...great music...interesting lyrics too... Tull was and still is a real favorite of mine. j t

Question to skydivers from Joe Jennings
jimmytavino replied to JoeJ's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
answers to your questions 1.. started jumping because i had never been in an airplane, i was 19 at the time, the first jump course was at a college, with 20 others, cost only 50 dollars, and seemed like the easist way to experience an airplane ride... i had 150 take-offs ( jumps) before i ever landed in a plane. -
true enough.... though there are not a lot of open areas to land,,, ( dry areas, that is ) so your off site canopy skills best be up to par... The pilot was cool...gave us the nickel tour. never donned a headset... for SURE wasn't in contact with ATC... here are few more pics... including this huge red headed woodpecker, who danced around in the pine tree clearing at a park we visited.... enjoy jmy

took a couple of days off and visited the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York Pine trees, fresh air, cool temps, ( it was 73 degrees there on a day when NY city was 93 )... We saw plenty of deer, canoes, local art , Knotty Pine architecture, turkeys, hawks, and other wildlife, and had a leisurely couple of days...We flew in a cessna 206 on floats, at a place called Paynes Air Service..... he had 6 or 7 float planes including a Cub, a couple of 180s, the 206, a C 185, and a couple which i couldn't ID.... hahahah likely waaay over a million dollars worth of aircraft !! he gave us a nice aerial tour..... The pilots name was Jim... jmy here are some pics.

I also made a bunch of jumps from one in the early 70's 9696Tango..... no step. retractable gear... the pilot would bring the gear out for exit... stand on the right brake, and the Tire was the "step"... on my # 3 static line,,, the JM and the pilot decided to get cute with me,, and he let off the brake... the tire rolled, I was left hanging from the strut, with my ass bumping against the wheel.... i stayed cool,,, did a chin up. reached back with my left foot and got back on the tire... I look in to the Jm and He and the pilot are both laughing like crazy.... (jerks ) anyway the exit went fine, but I was waaay long on the spot... Nice plane though... we were jumping at a small airport which had a flying club and the c210 belonged to the club... ( the chief Flight Instructor was our pilot ) jmy

any time away... can certainly increase the desire to return... it's that way with many many sports and other "activities" good to hear that you are well... come this way,,, and we'll find some gear for you... hell, my rig is available IF you wanna fly a 210..otherwise,,, we can press the lighter folks to share their 150's..... How you been hittin' them??? No hooks or slices,, i hope... MY golf handicap????? ...taking the clubs outta the trunk.........

this was on our siding one cold day last Fall.. i had to REALLY looook to be sure it was alive... took a few pictures.. left it alone. it was gone later that day...

had been working hard. all day.... i started by collecting a payment for a small job done one day, of the week before... 165 $$$ cash... got lots done, including dropping off my rig for a repack,,,,,, 60 miles from home.. was heading in... i called a pizza place near home and placed a take out order...so as to be the "returning Father... dinner in hand"... well i got there,,,, removed my wallet gave the worker a 20,,, and like a fool, laid my wallet on an eye level counter top and then backed away from it as other customers had arrived... i received my order and some change and left... it was 15 minutes later, at home , that I realized it was gone... damn..... dumbass for SURE!!!!. nuts. i called them and they said no sorry, no one turned in anything..... DUH!!!??? so the next day i returned and asked to speak with a manager, just in case... well She says.... "no problem,,, we'll check the Video" !!! whoa!!! of course.. video.. i had never thought of that.. see ??? dumbass!!!

What does the "board" mean in "room and board?"
jimmytavino replied to Twoply's topic in The Bonfire
i thought that long ago, any menu at an eating establishment was called, a "board of fare"... maybe it was written on a piece of wood, (board),,,, maybe not.... so "room & board" would mean lodging and something from the menu... paid room & board when i was a teen at my folks home....Found out it was better to simply move OUT of my folks house. -
we followed a 'hit or miss, trial and error' approach when figuring out a workable connection.. and found it worked in some modes and not others... maybe a different connection sequence will have different results... My jumping has been limited a little and so I haven't made as many jumps with the Nikon as i would have liked... I got a second remote. ( MC DC1 ) and lengthened the wire by about 2 feet and added a plastic. 'molex' quick connect....It takes some patience, some soldering and assembly, but is worth the effort. I found the connector at radio Shack... it's a 5 conductor wire i think, and so I used a 6 way connector... I run the switch pendant down my sleeve, and fire the stock remote from my hand... The molex lets me disconnect the helmet from the sleeve wire, and tucks away into my jumpsuit, prior to climbout... ( allow some extra slack in the wire to ensure there's never tension between one end of the wire and the other...) jt a 3914 d12122

how about??? "Pick UP the fall rate " !!!!! people going low sometimes means that others are going SLOW... however if poor technique causes someone to put themselves under it...... then yes.. stand them down, and try another..... Everyone should have an equal chance to deliver... or not.... good luck next time jmy
