The problem isn't with adoption. The waiting list for infants to adopt is literally years long (assuming we are discussing US infants). This is why so many couples adopt from overseas, rather than wait. Conversely, the list of kids over the age of 3 that need to be adopted and probably never will is truly heartwrenching. Check out www.adoptpakids.org So many kids need homes that are not available. Chad and I discussed this long before we were married, that we both want to adopt a few of these kids. Undecided about having one of our own or not. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I'm completely with Paj on the abortion stance (Paj, how often do we actually agree??). Actually, the more I think about it, the more I agree with the whole post, my initial instinct was that the guy should be able to have a say. But I think Paj has me convinced otherwise. Ethically, a woman should be able to discuss this with the guy, after all, if they are close enough to have sex, theoretically they should be close enough to have this kind of discussion to make the choice that sits best in their minds. Legally, the woman really should be the final determining factor since she is the one that has to carry the child for 9 months. I can't fathom someone being legally obligated to be pregnant if she with all her being wants an abortion. I do know that if I was pregnant and wanted an abortion and my husband did not, he would respect my decision and support me every step of the way. But I also know that our relationship would be seriously negatively affected and probably cause a huge rift between us. Back to my disclaimer that I'm against abortion to begin with. My husband and I are gone from 6a to 5pm, have 2 dogs, three cats, rabbit, guinea pig, and fish. All are spoiled rotten and seem to do just fine with our long hours. All are from humane league. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I agree, went to Catholic elementary school, and we were actively taught about other religions. When we went to church on Fridays, non catholics were present but did not participate in communion. We were exposed to Catholicism but not force fed it. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Call the number on the back of the card and ask them for one, or see if your particular therapist is a provider and if not who they can refer you to that is. Probably wouldn't be under physician, probably under the pt/ot/other therapy type providers. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Congrats on the weight loss!!! The only crappy part about it is having to buy all new clothes. I'm just like you, a goal of losing a total of 100 lbs. I went from 225, now at 146, goal is 125. Working at it slowly I'll get there sooner or later, and so will you! Great job so far!

600-Pound Woman Dies After Being Surgically Removed From Couch
peregrinerose replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
I've done home visits with people like this, 500+++ lbs, unable to move or get out of bed, house will need to lose a wall or two when they die, etc. They can be extremely nasty and unpleasant when they don't get fed, domineering and verbally abusive to those around them. They also have a phone and can easily order pizza themselves. There are always means to get what you want. It is a true addiction with these people, and if they go into 'withdrawl' have a lot of the same psychological effects. Some family members are strong enough to say no, others not. No matter how full the trough was, she fed herself and let herself get to the point where ambulation was impossible. It doesn't take family to get someone to that position, the cycle has to start somewhere and it isn't with them. Yes, they should have gotten help of some kind for her, even if it is a forklift so she could be bathed every so often. They didn't cause the problem though, only contributed, and definitely not blameless. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -

I'm an eye doc, blows my mind just how many times I've been offered tips. Freaking weird. Patients assume that because I give a damn about them as people and bend over backwards for them that I deserve it. I think I'm just doing my job the way it's supposed to be done. They are already paying me, why take more? Ethically, I can't bring myself to accept it. My most prized possession is a picture that a 4 year old drew for me. This kid had the living shit beat out of him by his dad and has had a rich history of skull/brain surgery as a result. His mom was my patient, but I played with him a bit too during the exam, explaining everything to him. He went out to the waiting room, borrowed some paper and found a marker, and drew a picture of me. It melted my heart. That means more to me than money ever could. Definitely NOT what I was taught. Only form of BC allowed was abstinance. No sex encouraged if not ready for kids. Sex very much frowned upon at all. Very strict Irish Catholic church I went to... CCD was called Catechism, entire service in Latin, etc. There are definitely variations in Catholic churches and how things are taught, far more tolerance in some than others. I was raised Catholic. There is no sex of any kind except for the sole purpose of reproduction in the Catholic Church. Any other reason for having sex of any kind including within marriage (since birth control is not allowed) is dooming you to hell. Yes, I do exaggerate a little with this, but not a whole lot. It took a really long time for me to even consider sex, I was afraid of it and what would happen to me as a result. Things change.... Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

600-Pound Woman Dies After Being Surgically Removed From Couch
peregrinerose replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
Sorry, I just clicked on your post to hit reply to. There were a bunch of posts criticizing family, and definitely they should have noticed something was wrong and encouraged getting some help for it. But in the end, she fed herself, she sat her ass on the couch and never moved, and she chose not to get help. It is extremely sad for her, but like drug addicts that kill themselves with their addictions, you can't force someone to do what is best for them. And I agree completely with the post about how difficult it is to lose 200 lbs and how easy it is to gain it. If anyone said a lot of the things to me that were on here when I was huge, it would have crushed me and made it that much harder to lose the weight due to the depression. It's a vicious circle, you get depressed because you're huge, then don't give a damn about what goes in your mouth or how much you sleep because that's all you have the energy to do. It takes a huge amount of self determination to break the cycle and truly make your life your own. But it is something that really has to be done in one's own head, no one can force you to do so (yes, speaking from experience). Sure, sex with someone that large would certainly have it's logistical issues, I know it did with me, but look how many guys buy the porn and blow up dolls of women who are that big. If they didn't buy it there wouldn't be a market for it. Big women like to get laid too. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
600-Pound Woman Dies After Being Surgically Removed From Couch
peregrinerose replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
Why is it someone else's fault that this woman had to be eating non stop and never moving to begin with? It isn't like she was tied to the couch and force fed. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
What makes a good person (can people change?)
peregrinerose replied to WrongWay's topic in The Bonfire
My husband pulled a lot of shit in his past, which I'm sure he dosen't want me spilling all over the internet, but it is extremely colorful and some would consider him a 'bad' person as a result. This was before I knew him, and at the time I probably would have considered him a total loser. He's not the same person that he was then. He doesn't regret most of what he did, because it is a part of him, and helped him to become the person he is now, but that is not who he is any more. He's the most caring, compassionate, giving person I know. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
When I get to the point that I can no longer enjoy life and truly live, whether due to mental or physical reasons, I will not exist. My meds will stop, I will be a DNR, and I will die in my own home on my own terms. I'd prefer medically assisted suicide due to the more swift and painless option, but will find other ways as needed. My husband and I feel the same way about this and have agreed that no matter how much it kills us to let the other go, we will support each other's feelings on the matter. What morons. Carts aren't used to be fought over, carts are made for one person to push it at high speeds all over the store while the other person rides or surfs on it. Great fun. Heresay of course, my husband and I would never engage in such behavior..... Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

How would you deal with this situation? (serious/girl related)
peregrinerose replied to grue's topic in The Bonfire
Sounds like it's partly the girl's fault since she knew he could be a dickwad from the first time he showed up at her place of employment, then she dodges his phone calls instead of doing the far more responsible thing and flat out telling him she is not interested. After she tells him no and he still persists in harassing her, then it's time to get parents/law involved. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -

Talk to your regular eye doc first, find out if you are even a candidate at all, then ask who the best surgeons in your area are. As an eye doc, we see the very best and very worst laser results. We know who is consistently good and who does work that looked like a lawn mower hacked up your cornea, so we know who is best to send our patients to. Talking to a handful of people is no comparison to the hundreds of lasik patients that go through eye doc offices. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I agree with Jeffrey regarding the ice skater thing and the kid probably jumped at the chance to do it. But look at the long term scenarios. Those kids who are pushed into their parents' dream worlds are often messed up in the head. Even the 12 year old is now an unemployed 21 year old with 2 kids who are in the care of his mother, the letters that Mary sent to him from jail are extremely controlling and threatening and jealous in nature, and this hasn't messed up his mind? The questions with minors isn't so much what they want to do, it is the long term effects of doing it. If a kid wants to go jump off a bridge, mom and dad are going to stop him because it is unsafe and the long term ramifications are less than favorable. No difference with the rape analogy. No legal effect for the idiots who live vicariously through their kids, but the moral issue is something else completely (and not really part of this thread anyway).
