  1. Do you really want a bunch of stoners walking around with guns? "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  2. Considering the context I think it is y'allses. BTW it is never ya'll but y'all. y'all (singular) all of y'all (plural) y'alls (possesive) y'allses or all of y'alls (plural possesive) "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  3. So doesn't this work out to 1 chance in 66,667 skydives of dieing? No guarantee that you are the one even if you have 66,666 skydives under your belt. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  4. Just like the government does, regardless of party in power. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  5. No problem and I totally agree on not depending on it. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  6. You can't rely on a cypress if all else fails either, I've heard of plenty of instances when a cypress doesn't fire... Could you document a few of these failures? A QUICK search of incidents doesn't show anything specific. However, I do agree don't depend on anything but yourself. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  7. This was 2001 where 3 of 32 fatalities where directly related to lines entangling with helmet/camera. From here Three jumpers have died this year when an entanglement occurred in some way with their helmet/camera combination. Two entanglements were with the main during/after a malfunction+cutaway, and one was with the reserve bridle after a cutaway. Only the person in the latter situation manage to remove the helmet before impact. If you jump with a camera helmet which has any snag points (such as a ring-sight, or camera mounting bracket) you are taking a substantial additional risk. If you further do not have some type of quick release, you are adding even more risk. At a minimum, you should have, built in to your malfunction plan, the intention of removing your helmet in case of an entanglement. Of course, this slows down your malfunction procedure, so deploying slightly higher in general is probably necessary to keep this from adding more risk as well. Weigh your options, think carefully, and consider modifying your helmet to reduce the chance of snags in the first place. I also could swear that in looking this kind of stuff up months ago I found a quote that indicated as a group camera flyers account for a disproportionate number of fatalities. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen or won't happen. "Truth is tough. 8. No, if they had been waiting for the perfect moment that would have been late next summer to give on last pre -election boost. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  9. Oh the memories! I started out like that back then but only got in four jumps in a many months because of high wind speed, > 7 MPH. Hated those landings too. When I restarted last year it was AFF and it is the only way to go. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  10. And although we were able to identify 600 sites where we were sure there were WMDs we didn't see a single site be cleaned out? Give me a break. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  11. 28 jumps and I voted yes to what the question should have been which is "Will you JM do everything in their power to pull for you if required." As many people have stated you are responsible for your own life even as an AFF student but the JM has accepted some of that too. They shouldn't get themselves killed trying to save you but they are there to make it as safe as the sport can be. To the person who talked about waiting for the instructor to do something for you, you were not paying attention. If you think there is a problem it is time for you to end the skydive, not wait for someone else to do it for you. Better to pull too early than too late. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  12. Call you local government (city, county, whatever) and find out what the laws about cats are. Some have the equivalent of leash laws. Do the note thing but put on it that next time the cat comes over it is going to the humane society. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  13. Got to agree. I was really glad when my wife said she didn't get any thrill from the tandem jump. Finances only let me jump once a month as it is. If both of us jumped it would be even less frequent. Once a month a get a day for myself - keeps me sane. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  14. Lovely tactic of only quoting part of what I said and not leaving any indication that there was more. Also no indication that I was responding to someone else. Here is what I said: "Again we have an issue of which president did the right thing. The intelligence gatherers don't change with the administration, only the administrations interpretation of the intel does I don't see how you can say one president was stupid and ignored good intel and another was stupid and paid attention to bad intel." You also didn't respond to this bit: "Colon Powell said we had pictures of 600 sites where we were sure WMDs were stored. Last I heard 400 had been checked (months ago) and no weapons found. There was one report early on about drums suspected to contain Sarin gas but they needed further testing. Never heard about them again. Two Al Samud missles were found on a trailer parked in the woods. Missles of the same type that were being actively destroyed. Sounds to me like a truck driver decided not being in that truck with an invasion going on was a good idea." And my comment about when SH used them was also in response to another who was using that as justification for the invasion. BTW I am not in the military now but was, in intel no less. 15. I will definately go over thins with a coach when I get there. We have several who know me pretty well by now and I'll see what their opinion is too. Thanks, "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  16. Finally a real answer. No disparagement to the fellow new folks because your experineces were great to hear but instructors was what I was looking for. I went straight through but am wondering what influence paying for it in advance had. In some ways my experience is a mixed bag. I did my first jumps back in '78 and '79 (yes anyone who is paying attention is getting tired of reading this) and then restarted in March of 2003. Riding up in the T-BO for a tandem was a bore although my son was about to jump out of his skin. That jump was a good re-start but AFF 2 and 3 were agony because of the amount of things to remember. After that it became fun again and after initial doubts I went for the license and now just drift between times I can get to the DZ. The next jump will be two months since the last and that is scary too. On the other hand I have a plan this time and will be doing H&Ps so I can work on flat turns at altitude and my landings. Not sure what this whole ramble really means other than I do love this sport. It is the first thing I have been able to get a passion for in a long time. "Truth is tough. 17. RE: [happythoughts] Well I almost got killed (again) On this page "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  18. There was a time in my life I was really good at that "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  19. You have this all wrong. Skydiving did not become cool until I started doing it. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  20. I don't like the way they "help" people. Republicans want to let business do what ever it wants and control what people do, democrats look at it the other way around. Repulicans want people to get off their asses and get a job. They don't mind giving to the truly needy, but don't want to be taken advantage of. They don't believe that the government is the answer to all of their problems. What do you dislike about how democrats help? FDR and the new deal were a good idea. Human nature, laziness, screwed it up. The government shouldn't provide everything but on the other hand it can't provide nothing. What neither party is willing to do is take the welfare programs and put the systems in place that look at individuals. The programs are also put together in stupid ways. It isn't hard to see why a single mother would choose welfare over work if daycare reduces her income to below the welfare levels. We need graduated levels to help get people of welfare and into work. My real soapbox is so far off of this thread but here goes. Education is the key. Unfortunately if we can't fix and entire school system we can't try. I say to hell with everyone else just fix kindergarten this year. Next year fix first grade and so on. In 12 years we would have the education system fixed. What is "fixed?" I don't know for sure that is up to the local schools in most cases, although having gone to 12 schools in 12 years I can see a real strong case for a basic national curriculum. "Truth is tough. 21. You give him to much credit. The problem people are Cheny, Rummy, Ashcroft, Karl Rove. Without Rove Bush would still just be the owner of the Rangers. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  22. 99.99% of politicians are in it for themselves. No matter of party affiliation. It is about power. I prefer the democrats because they at least pay lip service to helping people in general. Republicans want to let business do what ever it wants and control what people do, democrats look at it the other way around. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  23. Well son-of-a-gun, never thought he would make a decision I agreed with. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  24. My personal opinion is because we/they all wanted to believe he was dangerous on an international level so as to justify screwing with him as much as possible. Do I or have I ever supported SH? Hell no. Was he an evil man? Absolutely. Was he involved with 9/11? Probably not, certainly not at the levels our friends the Saudi's were. The real thrust of my argument was that people here on both sides of the fence are claiming that the other guys screwed up. One group by ignoring good intel and the other by acting on bad intel. Same intel in all cases. Now it is clear that a lot of the intel was bad or we would have turned something up by now. And if our satellite systems are so good as to tell us what is happening all of the time all over the world then how does a country hide all of there rather large and hard to dismantle WMDs and we didn't see it? The current administration also put a lot of weight on people who had it in their own best interest to see us invade so they could be part of the next group of rulers. I have said it before and I'll say it again. I understand and support the reason we invaded Afghanistan even if we managed to screw it up in the end. I don't support our reasons for invading Iraq even though I think the world is better off with SH in power. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
