  1. Yep. But I would be more interested in finding out why the guy in a suit was in the slums than a straight couple in "gay" neighborhood. The straight couple I doubt is doing anything fishy. ... But if it works, and it does not go to far...whats the problem? I would not mind being stopped by the cops if I were in Englewood or Compton. As long as they don't violate my rights....And asking em a few questions is NOT violating my rights. Well at least you are consistent in how you would apply it. The couple could be Christian fundamentalists scouting the neightborhood for deviant behaviour that should be punished by God and they will be his hand.
  2. Wow this is probably the most rational discussion we two have ever had. I want to clarify one thing first. I served a couple of years after Viet Nam and during the Gulf War but did not particiapte in either. I have never been in military combat and can't begin to comment on what it would be like other than to assume it would suck. For the most part I agree with what you say here. Serving did make me a better person than I was before but not neccessarily better than people who have not served. There is a difference between indoctrination and learning. If you came away from the military with an attitude of "My country, right or wrong." or worse "My country is always right." then you were indoctrinated. On the other hand if you came away with "There are a lot of hard things to do in life and sometimes you just have to get through them." then you learned. Edited to move comments about prrofiling to a different post. "Truth is tough. 3. Ron said: NewsStand said: How does your reply have jack to do with the above conversation? Tuna asked a question, and I answered it. The question and answer imply that had he served in the military he would take a more conservative point of view and would agree that profiling is a good idea. Now had he served recently that might be true but when I went in in '76 most people of my age and up to five or six years older were of a much more liberal (open minded) bent. When I got out of the reserves after the first Gulf war that same age group were much more conservative. I can only attribute it to growing up during and/or serving in Viet Nam and neighboring countries. Those that had experienced the ugly truth of a bad idea where more open to change. BTW, I also think that many veterans in this forum seem to think they are better than others simply because they are veterens. Some of them may be better than the rest of us but it is not simply because they served. "Truth is tough. 4. And the reason that today is different from yesterday is because of enough people bitching about the way things were handled yesterday. If a person with tattoos is wandering an expensive neighborhood you indicate that it is OK for the cops to stop and talk to them for no other reason than they look out of place. Wwe all know this happens. If a person in a suit is roaming the slums do you stop that person too? They are certainly out of place. Or a white person in the black part of town or an apparently staight couple in a gay neighborhood. I am not saying that profiling doesn't work only that because "I don't look like I belong here" is not probable cause. "Truth is tough. 5. Bingo. He says his family served, but his asthma kept him from serving. But it is clear that he has no military or law enforcement training. So how do you account for me who did serve but I agree with phillyKev? Maybe it is that couple of years of college that turned me in to a liberal. Oh wait this son of Nixon voting Republicans was a liberal before going in to the military or college. "Truth is tough. 6. You are quick to cry about one person being inconvineced. But you are slow to admit that maybe there have been hundreds or even ONE person that could not get a fake ID do to the same restrictions. But we have something like seven known terrorists roaming the country who apparently go in after all of the new security. There have also been many reports of perfectly innocent people of middle-eastern decent being hugely inconvenienced. Great report in the paper the other day about a Anglo software salesman and budding author being added to the watch list because he wrote a sentence with the word bomb in it on his newspaper during a flight. Paranoid passenger sitting next to him reported it to the flight attendant who contacted TSA who contacted the Dallas cops. He was even able to show on his laptop where he had added the phrase to his book. Wasn't good enough for the Dallas police. They let him go but said they will be watching him. Reports of people with the same name as suspected terrorists having to prove over and over again that they are not the bad guy. And yes, Kris, who is going through a lot of trouble directly or indirectly, caused by the Patriot Act. Of course if they did capture someone they couldn't tell us because then they might compromise security or worse have to get the person a lawyer. "Truth is tough. 7. In fact it was posted to show an extreme example of how much of the media does treat the two and because I thought it was funny. Of course the examples are unrealistic but that is what makes it humor. In the eyes of the right wing portion of the media Kerry can do no good and Bush can do no wrong. Granted it works the other way too with the left wing portion of the media. As to Kennedy's statement, I really couldn't care less what he thinks of me which I think I made pretty clear in my response to him. "Truth is tough. 8. They forgot to tape his mouth shut. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  9. Well on the Triathalon it sends me nearly straight down if I pull them in enough. To much and it stalls the canopy. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  10. Finally got through to the DZ rigger and it is a Triathalon not a Sabre. More to the point is that I have jumped the rig about 30 times so I am reasonably familiar with it. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  11. Wohoo, I made Kennedy's s*** list! "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  12. Too true "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  13. Had I PLF'ed I don't think I would have been hurt at all, that was the second mistake. I hope to learning a lot from Brian in the next month or so!. My previous landing of the day had been a rear riser and while still a little harder than I would want was not a bad first attempt. I left myself the room to use them properly. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  14. Everything is relative isn't it?
  15. Exit weight approx. 190lbs "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  16. Nothing high performance about the boat I was flying but point is well taken. "Gotta let up on them above 50-100 feet though, to give the canopy enough time to recover to normal flight. " That is the part I screwed up. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  17. Ah yes vigilanti justice, just what Iraq needs. How 'bout they just track him down and either capture him or turn him in instead of killing him? "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  18. On Monday, a day of scattered clouds in central Texas, i watched an aircraft fly under the jump plane I was in and if not directly over the DZ very close. I would have hated to meet him in a cloud. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  19. Playing with the rear risers up high has given me a good idea of where the stall point on this canopy is so that is one thing I was not worried about. I still left myself in a position with no flair as much more pull on them would have stalled it. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  20. My experience, limited to this one canopy, is that I can not get much sinkage with toggles but I can with the rear risers. In either case the problem would have been the same in that I had the canopy in the max breaks position to high for landing and to low for letting it back up and then flairing. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  21. That is so cool. Wondered why he had the dog and cat there this weekend. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  22. Second jump of the day 47th total. Sabre 2 (I think, rental gear, same canopy I have been jumping for most of these jumps.) 210 loaded at .9. Winds 10 - 15. I was working on accuracy and using rear risers to sink in when I realized to late that I did not have time to release them and then flair and there was not much left in them to flair with either. Did not react quickly enough and so although I let myself collapse to the ground I did not PLF. End result is a "tarsail chip fracture", possible tibial plateau fracture, splint and crutches. Go see the Doc in a few days and get told how long this is going to ground me. If the knee still hurts in a couple of weeks that takes the tibial plateau fracture from possible to yeah you had one. Lessons learned: 1. Landing safely is more important than getting close to the target. 2. PLF, PLF, PLF 3. Have the canopy in a condition where you can flair when needed. 4. During your vacation week save skydiving for the end so as not to screw up your other plans. edited to add that this is the same canopy I always jump. One more edit, I am signed up for a canopy control class too. Assuming enough people pay the deposits on the slots they reserved! "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  23. As you said different people have different learning methods but doing more than one in a day lets you use what you learned and work through and correct what went wrong. Besides, assuming tandem to AFF progression where you start at AFF2, once you are done with two and three the number of things you have to do in one jump drops and it starts being fun. But man I hated those first two AFF jumps. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  24. For the same reason I hope my kids listen when I say just because I was guilty of inder age drinking doesn't make it OK for you. Learn from my mistakes. Granted they probably won't listen but you have to do everything you can. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
  25. Too funny and she clearly has a great sense of humor. "Truth is tough. It will not break, like a bubble, at a touch; nay, you may kick it about all day like a football, and it will be round and full at evening." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes
