They made mention that someone tried to put a bill up to stop this practice and no one came on board. Here is an interesting thought - the US Gov't can enforce any of it's laws on it's citizens even if they break them offshore. One big area they are cracking down on are those that fly to other countries to have sex with children. This means they can even bust you for smoking pot or doing hash while in Amsterdam. Same here. Saw some as a kid and they have always drawn my attention. A tornado warning gets me as excited as a jump, but scare me more than anything else. I have lost count of how many funnel clouds I have seen, but only about 3 that were on the ground. I was going to chase a few years back but just never had the time or money to go. The power of a tornado is something you have to witness and respect. Yes, I believe that the political forces are that much stronger. I don't believe in a conspiracy or any of that junk. Why not now? Money. This country has a vested interest in OPEC with a proxy vote via Iraq and the pipeline we built in Afghan. There are too many political connections that will be taken into consideration first before economy, cost, and longevity of resources (and that pesky environment issue). Imagine the political backlash if the Bush admin annnounced a five year plan to be off of fossil fuels? Imagine the job loss and the complaing suits about having their cash cow removed from under them? Until they find a way to make good $$$ off of a new infrastructure you will not see a rush to any new methods. I used to for the older, easier games like Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen, etc. Once they went to a true 3D environment I gave up. So, something that isn't the norm doesn't deserve the same freedoms, respect, rights, et al as what is the norm? Outside the norm = wrong??? Skydiving is a fringe sport pretty far away from the norm. Therefore the USPA and it's members are trying to force it as a norm on the rest of the population. In fact, the USPA helped lobby to get jump planes to operate outside the normal rules related to collison avoidance devices. Therefore Skydiving = wrong? btw - somehow I lost how over regulation on freedom of expression on a paid medium somehow connects to gay marriage. What this thread points out is that you have a bunch of options for your price range....esp if you are looking for something that will just hold a bunch of songs. I've had a chance to test drive about eight different MP3 players and they are almost the same besides the extra bells and whistles. If you are not a geek most of those won't matter. Personally speaking I wouldn't even recommend the one I settled on (the newest Dell DJ) due to a few minor annoyances with driver support and the cable used to connect it to your computer. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The injury isn't jump related and it will eventually keep me out of the sky for good from the looks of it. How soon that will happen is up in the air. (pun intended) I have other things to keep me happy in life. Skydiving is only a part of me. If I have to quit the sport I will take that cash and finally put it towards flight school (can you say acrobatic?). And it will lose. Just because a parent can't control their children's viewing habits means the rest of the adult world has to suffer? If Larry Flint can defend his freedom of speech there, the pay for tv market will have an easy time. Even Powell has said the FCC has no right to restrict a subscription based service. The only thing this will do is drive up the cost of our subscriptions. What comes next? Preventing movies with the same content from being made? After all that is something you have to pay for that kids somehow find a way to see. Bad parenting = more legislation? I have a reason for asking this. I was thinking about low turns that result from people landing out. A good portion of those last minute turns into a tiny backyard seem to happen because they tried for too long to make it back the DZ. My thought is some of those could have been prevented if they just checked the spot. I do realize that proper canopy instruction including flat/braked turns would help as well....but we could save that for another thread....that isn't where my focus is at the moment. We are looking at possible wingloading BSRs to help prevent canopy injuries, wouldn't it make sense to install good spotting skills to avoid a few more of those? Thus I was wondering if it is still taught. That's what it used to be for me.....however life got in the way this past year (money, old injury, etc) and I haven't been full time active since Rantoul. I made a couple jumps at Freaks and a couple in November...but that's it. I've developed a really active social life with my whuffo friends again....it's helped me lose focus on jumping, esp since I am having such a great time and having fun. I still dream about flying a couple nights a week. I know my heart is still there....but I need to get back up there to remind my head why I love to do it.....to rediscover that reason again. I'm just curious if anyone really teaches it. If so, what size dz, plane (GPS?), student program, student canopies, and when you start to teach it (maybe even how you teach it). I'm not even sure if the USPA has it in the new program since I never went thru it. He is a republican and doesn't hold the same views on many topics that I do. Esp that whole bribe scandal. In fact, it was that scandal that caused the Nobel's to come out and ask via the media to make sure he wasn't nominated. Apparently they want all candidates to be clean with no bad press associated with them. Don't confuse marketing with programming. Seems like good biz to take advantage of a new trend while it is hot. Shows like Fear Factor, Wife Swap, American Idol, and the rest surivive because the audience demands more of the same. If certain parts of the original Surivior had never grabbed the attention of the public we wouldn't be seeing shows like this. Well, at least in the US - these types of shows have been popular outside this country for years. These shows are still on the air because the majority wants them there, thus they set the standards. As I said before, it's a very vocal minority that is making all the waves about what is on TV. Concerned about what your kids watch? Then watch TV with them so you can address things as they happen. Most parents don't have enough time in the day to do that so they use it as a babysitter. What's on TV is a dynamic environment with thousands of ooportunities to see something 'bad.' Be a good partent and control how much they watch and encourage them to read books to expand their imagination and education.....and if you choose otherwise then don't get upset when your kids find out about life via the TV while you are not around. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
