  1. Plenty. More than most. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  2. Apparently us 'snow-birds' have no understanding that sports is big business? Let's see - The Packers/Bears/Notre Dame/Illini/UW Madison football teams are HUGE here. People place their season tickets into their living will. The residents of Green Bay OWN the team. Chicago has a variety of sports teams - and trust me when I say that the entire town can shut down depending on which team is playing. Despite my hatred of the team, the Cubs are one of the most popular teams around. Tourists plan out years in advance coming to games here. Chicago just spent many millions of dollars to upgrade a football stadium that gets used maybe a total of 10 times a year. Hotel industry? Yup, have that as well and we are building a 4th convention center to drive that business more (to steal away biz from Orlando btw). Plus our Mayor has spent the last ten years and most likley over a billion dollars cleaning up this city and reconstructing our lakefront to bring in more tourists. So, don't go using "you don't understand the south" BS...well, because it is BS. Biz is Biz no matter where you go. It is easy to formulate an excuse no matter what. Even if the title was off, it still is about the lack of humanity in the face of a major tragedy. Just for a game? F' That. And F' Them. And if the South thinks it is ok for this to happen, then F' the South. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. Prices all over the map in the Chicago suburbs where I live, but seem to be averaging around $3.40. OTOH I bought 100 octane AVGAS for my plane today for $3.00/gal. in Hobart, IN. I get around 18mpg from my plane, so right now it's as cheap to fly it to places as to drive my car there. $3.21 for 87 in Chicago near my house (near the airport), across the street in the burbs it was $3.00. A round trip to the DZ would cost me about $15 in gas! Rethinking my trip to N Wisconsin right now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  4. You need to hang out on the SW side more if you think they are occasional! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  5. Chicago: Immediate threat: Blizzard/ice storms, heat waves, tornado and related winds/storms, flooding, drought. (most we are ready to deal with - 28 inches of snow is cleared from streets within in 12 hours of snowfall, etc.) Not so immediate: Earthquake (this would mess us up the most, we are not ready for this here) Well, maybe: If the caldera volcano went off we would all have issues. The rare tropical storm that makes it's way to the Midwest. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. Arming yourself is only a temp solution. This is a part of the human condition. Lines get blurred during an emergency. Police are ok with a grandmother looting water to take care of her grandchildren, yet they shoot someone taking a stack of clothes from a store. This will only make the situation worse and cause more of an uproar. I've read many reports that we are only one emergency away from a civil/class war in this country. We thought that triggers like race riots in LA, championship victory idiotic mob action, police brutality, etc would spur it. Something like this storm provides more internal motivation and rage. Study up on mob action - what's happening in the south right now is textbook. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 8. QuoteOnce that City was being evacuated, they knew that it was open season for looting. It was all there waiting for them, and they just had to wait out the storm to get going with it. The bitch is that they had no idea that they would be fighting for survival." Anyone that has ever watched a bad B-grade disaster flick could have seen this coming. You didn't need to grow up on the street to realize there would be someone willing to exploit the negative to their advantage. I'm sure you are quite familiar with the ambulace chasers. The sad part? Is that humanity at its worse can be summed up by a really bad Hollywood cliche. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 9. Again - the media in action. This is not just one city getting flooded. NOLA gets the attention because it makes good headlines and has better pictures to tug at the heart. Destructive winds lashed out over 125 miles from the heart of Katrina - and the path was over a total of three states. The amount of people that suffered from this storm range from SE Florida to Norther Miss and Georgia. My friends family in central MS have informed us that their town took a beating and may never be the same again While I am a critic of the slow prep and response of emergency relief - I have to admit that the size of this response hasn't been seen in this country in over 100 years. Not even Andrew did this much damage. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  10. Wow...just when you think people are starting to become smarter, understanding and helpful. You get someone tossing around instults about Jews for no reason? Cliff - if negligence was obvious I would be calling for this man to go on trial for the deaths of the people that perished due to his ignorance. However, in the mean time, the only ignorance I see is in this thread. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. Couple things - there is always a "not in my back yard" attitude when something comes to your area to threaten the status quo. Those left behind in NO were either 1) stupid 2) poor, broke, alone or old and unable to move or had no where to go 3) opportunists waiting for an emergency to happen. There is a combination of good people suffering and bad people adding to the misery. Mob action happens, and anarchy will set in since many feel there will be no consequences. There will be a unique form of predujice against any non-locals as well...however, some are not deserving of it. Negative news travels the fastest and good news just gets boring to tell at a time like this. Therefore you will only hear the bad. BTW - this is a bad sign for our country. We saw this disater coming. The 'experts' have guessed this to happen for years. What will happen if the west coast gets hit with the big one or a tsunami? What happens if NYC or Miami gets hit with a Cat 5? What happens if a terrorist attack really happens? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  12. They had days to prepare for the disaster when they knew a high power storm was headed to an area that has suffered several storms in the last year. They had close to two days to start prep work when they knew they had a 4/5 storm about to hit an area that was not built to withstand that type of storm. Failure across the board. Mobilization can start before a hurricane. Homeland Security is a joke when a large portion of National Guard have been shipped off. It's also a joke when they fail to see a possible emergency approaching this country. Fact is - full force relief support should have been on site within 24 hours. I'm glad Bush has taken a harsh tone about it - but he put these people in place. You think the Bush family would have learned after Hurricane Andrew. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. The advent of this started with full time coverage of an event - The OJ chase. News consultants had already been pushing for a high gloss, polished look to the local news channels and MSNBC ran with that info. Since then everyone has followed suit. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  14. Found one of the breaks in the levee on the 17th street canal. http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/storms/katrina/24425580.jpg This is literally the line in NO where you are either flooded or not. They released why the wall broke - the waves that came on top of the surge caused water to go over the wall. That erroded the ground at the base of the wall until it couldn't hold the weight of the canal anymore. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. The loss can be taken care of at tax time - they have accountants for that. Should the hotels be responsible for the next few months? No, of course not. However, it did just happen and the majority of these people have been left with nothing or no where to go. The mental damage alone in the first few days has to be something fierce. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. You got that right! I just want someone to have dinner ready for me when I get home, is that too much to ask? As long as the delivery guy isn't late, it isn't. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  18. Sometimes things have to change when a major event takes place. Forcing out walk-ins for a major event is typically a good biz choice. However, these people being forced out into the streets have no where else to go. Their homes are gone. These football fans are coming from places where their homes are still standing. What types of letters do you think a family with small children will write to your corp office when they end up living on the street due to a corp decision like this. My co worker isn't all that upset that he had to cancel his trip to NOLA this weekend. It's not like this Hurricane has been a small news item. Need comes before greed. Do you think hotels in NYC should have kicked out homeless families after 9/11 destroyed their condos just so a Knicks fan could come to town? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 19. No, not yet. But I would like to make a before pic from last year, then after Charlie/Dennis, then something after that, and then after Katrina. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  22. I no longer see the point to a marriage unless you are going to have kids. What exactly is the differance? Some dude watches you talk and signs a document. Maybe once I was living with someone for a while after we have dated a few years. However, I sure won't make the mistake of asking anyone to marry me again for some time - if ever. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. From Tribune news services: Tribune staff reporters Angela Rozas and Charles Storch contributed to this report Published September 1, 2005 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- First it was Hurricane Katrina chasing them away. Now it's the fans of the Miami Hurricanes. Hundreds of storm refugees are being evicted from Tallahassee hotels to accommodate football fans coming to town for the Miami-Florida State game Monday night. "There is absolutely no compassion here whatsoever," Lynne Bernard wrote on a bulletin board on the Web site of The Times-Picayune of New Orleans. "The Hampton Inn in Tallahassee is pretty much throwing us out because of a football game." A message left for the manager at the Hampton Inn was not returned, but other hoteliers said there was little they could do. At the Courtyard Marriott near the Capitol, evacuees were taking up 15 of the hotel's 154 rooms on Wednesday. A Quality Inn had several dozen of its 90 rooms occupied by storm refugees. "This weekend has been booked for a couple of months," said Antwan Hinkle, the Quality Inn's front desk manager. He said people who have planned trips for months would not take it well if they were told just days before the game that the hotel could not provide rooms. Christian Heritage Church announced plans to open its doors for as many as 200 refugees for four nights starting Friday then began referring people to the local chapter of the American Red Cross, which is planning to open shelters for 3,000. "When Miami fans come in, it pretty much takes over Tallahassee," said Cheryl Everett, a church volunteer. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. You say it like its a bad thing. Greed is the basis of the market economy. Greed is what separates capitalism from socialism. Greed is often (but not always) what makes capitalism and market economies work. _Am Thank you Mr Gecko. Competition drives capitalism, not pricing exploits due to disaster. You feel that driving the price up on gas will help our economy? We are going to take a MASSIVE hit this year due to this storm....the effect will take years to recover from. Other items will go up in price by default (more fuel costs = higher grocery costs). Therefore people STOP spending money elsewhere. My entire group of friends have canceled our road trip to N Wisconsin due to fuel costs. Greed is not good. This will have a ripple effect. And yes Andy, I have taken my basic economic courses. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
