  1. because there should be limits to freedom, plain and simple. the fact that you are using that quote in your sig line and my knowledge of your beliefs implies that you believe that there should be no limits to ones freedoms. Quick answer: Bill got it, you missed it. I don't believe in anarchy. I believe in the freedoms this country was founded on and I believe there are responsibilities associated with them. Freedom of speech is, in my opinion, the root of all our freedoms. I do enjoy watching Bush hang himself with his own words. The president, and defender of our rights, pushed forth the thought that freedom of speech should be limited because it was used against him? On that thought alone he will never have a chance of gaining my support. On that thought alone he is the worst person to be in office leading our country. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. And you jumped to that conclusion how? Bush loves to limit American freedoms. This one in particular was connected to freedom of speech. Google it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  3. Rule by emoting fear out of your populace is better/different? Look in the months leading up to the election. We never heard the end of possible threats to this country which lead to a rise in threat level many times. We haven't had a full rise in threat level since the election ended. We had a slight increase in threat level on mass transit only after London was bombed. So, loose threats that Ridge declared as old and exaggerated before the election elicited more attention than an actual attack from our main focus? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. Yes, please get your news from Fox News. Because we know they never slant either way. The only other places you haven't mentioned are the AP, Reuters, and BBC. Did you know that all of the news stations and newspapers all use these as a reliable source? Next time, pay attention to the initial line of a story used by the major outlets - you will find they often come from the same source. BTW - it must be great to take a 5 week vacation while making a huge salary like that. I know that the Pres and CEO of my company feel they cannot afford more than two weeks off (even with a blackberry at their hip and a HUGE support staff) and we are only a Fortune 100 company. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 5. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050814/ap_on_hi_te/hybrid_tinkerers Experimental Hybrid Cars Get Up to 250 Mpg By TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer Sun Aug 14, 4:22 AM ET CORTE MADERA, Calif. - Politicians and automakers say a car that can both reduce greenhouse gases and free America from its reliance on foreign oil is years or even decades away. Ron Gremban says such a car is parked in his garage. It looks like a typical Toyota Prius hybrid, but in the trunk sits an 80-miles-per-gallon secret — a stack of 18 brick-sized batteries that boosts the car's high mileage with an extra electrical charge so it can burn even less fuel. Gremban, an electrical engineer and committed environmentalist, spent several months and $3,000 tinkering with his car. Like all hybrids, his Prius increases fuel efficiency by harnessing small amounts of electricity generated during braking and coasting. The extra batteries let him store extra power by plugging the car into a wall outlet at his home in this San Francisco suburb — all for about a quarter. He's part of a small but growing movement. "Plug-in" hybrids aren't yet cost-efficient, but some of the dozen known experimental models have gotten up to 250 mpg. They have support not only from environmentalists but also from conservative foreign policy hawks who insist Americans fuel terrorism through their gas guzzling. And while the technology has existed for three decades, automakers are beginning to take notice, too. So far, DaimlerChrysler AG is the only company that has committed to building its own plug-in hybrids, quietly pledging to make up to 40 vans for U.S. companies. But Toyota Motor Corp. officials who initially frowned on people altering their cars now say they may be able to learn from them. "They're like the hot rodders of yesterday who did everything to soup up their cars. It was all about horsepower and bling-bling, lots of chrome and accessories," said Cindy Knight, a Toyota spokeswoman. "Maybe the hot rodders of tomorrow are the people who want to get in there and see what they can do about increasing fuel economy." The extra batteries let Gremban drive for 20 miles with a 50-50 mix of gas and electricity. Even after the car runs out of power from the batteries and switches to the standard hybrid mode, it gets the typical Prius fuel efficiency of around 45 mpg. As long as Gremban doesn't drive too far in a day, he says, he gets 80 mpg. "The value of plug-in hybrids is they can dramatically reduce gasoline usage for the first few miles every day," Gremban said. "The average for people's usage of a car is somewhere around 30 to 40 miles per day. During that kind of driving, the plug-in hybrid can make a dramatic difference." Backers of plug-in hybrids acknowledge that the electricity to boost their cars generally comes from fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases, but they say that process still produces far less pollution than oil. They also note that electricity could be generated cleanly from solar power. Gremban rigged his car to promote the nonprofit CalCars Initiative, a San Francisco Bay area-based volunteer effort that argues automakers could mass produce plug-in hybrids at a reasonable price. But Toyota and other car companies say they are worried about the cost, convenience and safety of plug-in hybrids — and note that consumers haven't embraced all-electric cars because of the inconvenience of recharging them like giant cell phones. Automakers have spent millions of dollars telling motorists that hybrids don't need to be plugged in, and don't want to confuse the message. Nonetheless, plug-in hybrids are starting to get the backing of prominent hawks like former CIA director James Woolsey and Frank Gaffney, President Reagan's undersecretary of defense. They have joined Set America Free, a group that wants the government to spend $12 billion over four years on plug-in hybrids, alternative fuels and other measures to reduce foreign oil dependence. Gaffney, who heads the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Security Policy, said Americans would embrace plug-ins if they understood arguments from him and others who say gasoline contributes to oil-rich Middle Eastern governments that support terrorism. "The more we are consuming oil that either comes from places that are bent on our destruction or helping those who are ... the more we are enabling those who are trying to kill us," Gaffney said. DaimlerChrysler spokesman Nick Cappa said plug-in hybrids are ideal for companies with fleets of vehicles that can be recharged at a central location at night. He declined to name the companies buying the vehicles and said he did not know the vehicles' mileage or cost, or when they would be available. Others are modifying hybrids, too. Monrovia-based Energy CS has converted two Priuses to get up to 230 mpg by using powerful lithium ion batteries. It is forming a new company, EDrive Systems, that will convert hybrids to plug-ins for about $12,000 starting next year, company vice president Greg Hanssen said. University of California, Davis engineering professor Andy Frank built a plug-in hybrid from the ground up in 1972 and has since built seven others, one of which gets up to 250 mpg. They were converted from non-hybrids, including a Ford Taurus and Chevrolet Suburban. Frank has spent $150,000 to $250,000 in research costs on each car, but believes automakers could mass-produce them by adding just $6,000 to each vehicle's price tag. Instead, Frank said, automakers promise hydrogen-powered vehicles hailed by President Bush and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, even though hydrogen's backers acknowledge the cars won't be widely available for years and would require a vast infrastructure of new fueling stations. "They'd rather work on something that won't be in their lifetime, and that's this hydrogen economy stuff," Frank said. "They pick this kind of target to get the public off their back, essentially." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. I came up with an idea that Beth said they would look at. Basic idea: Pay full fee up front. If you stay over the deadline you don't get your money back....if you leave early and turn in wristband you get a pro rated return. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 9. Haven't hit a person out of anger since I was 17 and proud of it. There isn't a need for violence - intelligence can work your way out of 99% of what life throws your way. However my ability to get really pissed off is certainly there. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. Actually, when I first found DZ.com it wasn't in this shape at all, and the amount of members it had was just a handfull....and often made fun of by those on rec.sky(and some of them are even posting in this thread!!). Yes, the rec was there before the summer of '99 when I started; I read a lot of the archives (it pays to be a geek somedays) Plus. Alot of the great posts from it had been archived on the old skydive faq website (is that still around?) and one of the early versions of Jan's makeithappen site. When I was there, the amount of flaming on it pales in comparison to what happens in speakers corner now. Each time I made a post asking for help it resulted in Snuffy or TT or someone like that instantly turning it into junk. Luckily I did get some good advice from people like Jeff Stienkamp, Jan and MikeTJumps....but those were rare gems. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. Sorry Dave, the good posts on there were so far and few between it was hard to find them. I was a usenet freak for years and know how it all works.....and doubt this forum is going away. Mostly what it was/is full of was Snuffy spamming every thread with garbage or TT jumping in with more venom. Then there was the FL numbers and the thousands of threads related to that (Espen had to be more of a PW than Clay). I have no idea why I read it as much as I did.....I even dialed up and checked it via my laptop while attending my first WFFC at Quincy in '99. However, once I started my student program I was starving for information to learn from. The day I choose to look for a new source of information is when I downloaded over 1000 new replies and I couldn't find anything helpful. That's when I found DZ.com and GroundRush.com. There were some good people on there, and you listed a bunch of them.....but overall the social aspect of it was terrible. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... WoW?

Yup, still play - lvl 60 NE Warrior on Burning Blade as well. Have a few others here and there on other realms, and some lower lvl's on BB. Doing a lot of end-game content like Molten Core, Onyxia and owning the horde in Alterac BG's (ranked #39 last week) oh yea, nerf shammy! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 15. I never found rec.sky to be that helpful overall. It did introduce me to people that encouarged me to attend my first Quincy when I was a student....but I never learned anything from that group. At most it was a place for a select few people to say how better they were than everyone else....outside of that it was a flamefest that got old after a week. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. You can't do first man down at the WFFC - there are multiple plane in the air at any time, and several landing areas. You have some people flying big canopies away from the main, and people with tiny canopies zooming to the main or to the swoop pond. While in the air there is never a discernable pattern. It is even worse when the sock and the Tetrahedon are pointed in opposite direction on light/variable days. It is nuts....and I have made enough jumps there to say that only the first year at Rantoul was the best year for canopy flight I've seen at the convention. Even with you head on a swivle you can't follow all the canopies that may effect you. Last year I had one hell of a close call. I was testing out a new canopy that I was thinking of using for a BM suit. I choose to land out far away from the swoop pond. NO ONE was in my airspace from 3000 - 1500. Apparently someone felt it was safe to fly and hover above my canopy the entire time because as I checked over my shoulder before I made my final turn I saw nothing but canopy. It's the first time I have had to left up my legs to avoid getting hit by another canopy. This happened at nearly 500 feet. The guy walked up to me and apologized afterwards and then ran off. And it seems it is the same people, or same dz's every year that want to claim the convention is a bust. However, from all I hear there really isn't that many there this year. I guess all those complaints and threats were real last year. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 17. This could be the first one since 1999 that I have missed. Damn flu this weekend....no vacation time with new job, next weekend is hard to tell from here since I have soooo much going on. Damn, and it's only 90 minutes away from where I sit right now. Can't jump this year as my rig is out of date and no USPA license at the moment. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 18. Why shouldn't they teach it? After all the church has advanced such great scientific 'theory' that placed the Earth at the center of the universe. Hey, being ignorant didn't stop Bush from advancing up the ranks....so how bad can it be teaching fiction as fact? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 19. Finally another answer to the question of this thread: level the playing field. In case anyone missed it, Jan has an incredible, ethical idea here. I think that it can work, generate money for your DZs (helps you keep cheaper jump tickets), and no longer gives tandem students a negative image of our sport. Good job Jan. I can see Dave's point, but I do know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO's) companies charge a hell of a lot more than $95. If you don't believe me - just google that term. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  20. There are people that believe that Nostradamus has fortold the future as well. Witnessed miracles? You mean stories that were passed on for generations before being put on paper? I'm sure the reports were not bent at all to get in line with the prophecy. I've said it before - it takes 10 min after a fatality for the media to report an incorrect take that thousands will believe as real because it was passed on to them. How much will a story mutate over many years when most were uneducated? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 21. Didn't read it - but my guess is the article talks about historical data supporting the man named Jesus, right? Never denied such a person walked the Earth....however, what makes his words different than any other that proclaims they are the son of god? I'm sure you have a link for that......but I can tell you the answer you should say. Faith. It is the only thing that can't be argued because it is personal. However, most don't keep it personal - they tend to push it on others to the point of death. Belief systems kill others that don't believe. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  22. I promise you, I have spent plenty of years talking, practicing, studying religion....more than most I am certain. I have had moments where I thought some higher power talked to me, and in reality it was just me needing to believe in something at that moment. The mind is a powerful thing - it can make you sick or it can make you believe in a god. Fact is there is nothing to back up anything that any religion preaches. That is where faith comes.....and it's about the same as kids believing in Santa Claus. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. 1 - have you served? do you understand how chain of command works? or is this just a slam 2 - We could contrast your comment to the democrats "our way or the highway approach" or the "doesn't matter what the content is as long as it's the opposing view way or the highway approach". It used to be that after elections, the two parties would suspend the mud for a while. Now it's just 24/7/365 Served? No. Chain of command, yes. There are leaders and then there are people that have leadership responsibilities.....however they are often piss poor leaders and do nothing to instill trust or respect into those they command. You don't need to be in the military to understand that. If you want to take it further into some subculture discussion on fraternity...don't bother, I won't delve into that. My critical nature of politics is not one sided. I have no problem pointing out the issues the Dems have, esp since I am not one. People on this forum seem to forget there are people here that are a bit more dynamic than a restrictive two-party system allows them to be. I tend not to post here anymore because all arguments INSTANTLY go to bi-partisian bullshit. Am I more critical of Bush than others in office right now? Not really - you should hear me talk about Mayor Daley or our Gov. I will be voting for anyone that isn't Daley in our next election - and GASP! - that means I will have to vote Repub! bottom line, I call out stupid bs no matter which side or sides do it. Both the dems and the gop are good at the mudslinging....however, I think the Repubs have the lead on it with Bush, Cheney and Rove leading the pack. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. Bashed?I wouldn't say that. I think it is obvious in the news the issues for him in this post. Bush seems to have made it his goal to cause further damage within the UN and our relations with the global community. His "my way or the highway" way of doing things may work in the military where people are forced to follow their leader....but he isn't in the military anymore. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 25. In a two-party system, does anyone honestly think there is such thing as a PERFECT candidate? How about a better candidate? This is a sensitive position and to force someone like Bolton into it?? How does that make sense? Do I have a name for GW...of course not, but he pays Rove the big bucks to do that _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
