I would definitely agree that canopies do not always scale well. I assisted the Parks College Parachute Research Group www.pcprg.com with various testing of scaled models of military canopies and we found radical changes in performance with changes in scale. Parachutes are very dynamic; I can see how PD may have run into some unexpected surprises at certain canopy sizes. Back when the Vengeance and Velocity came out, PD mentioned to a few of us over dinner one night how each new idea in parachute designs teaches them so much more......canopies like the Vengeance took an incredible amount of time to perfect, while the Velocity was one of the easiest ones to complete in the R&D process....which was opposite to what they believed would happen. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I don't remember PD actually starting the advertising on the Velocity, Vengeance or Sabre2 until they came out. Hell, PD didn't even have a name for the Sabre2 for some time - they were torn on what to call it even when Skydive Chicago was doing test jumps on it. When I first jumped the canopy it was called the XE190. Is 6 months a long time to wait from marketing to product? Yea, of course - in IT rumors of it being Vaporware comes about. But then again, not all skydiver are on this forum talking about it - they have just seen 4 or 5 adds and probably never gave it a second thought. And most people won't care to find out more about it - I still know some people, including a gear seller or two, that think the Crossfire2 is a cross-braced canopy. But this is PD - and they usually go on the side of caution. I have no problems with them waiting until it's done. Like some popular game designer said "It's done when it's done." You know, if it hit the market and needed a mandatory SB shortly thereafter, it would kill the demand for the canopy and they would need to release the Katana2 just about a year later, not that any parachute company has ever done that I can wait, and I am not calling PD every day asking them about it - I will get a chance to jump it as soon as it's done, and I don't want to jump it before it.....now, where the hell is my copy of Doom3 and half-life 2????? Oh, and canopies can scale - ask PD what planform the Sigma and Sabre2 are based/scaled off of. I've heard the save money on effects argument before, I'm not sure that I buy it. Maybe I'm just a dork, but I thought that they looked like humans in an effort to show how advanced they had become. - Jim In 40 years they go from walking toasters to fully synthetic humans with religious beliefs and sex drives? They have religion but no reason why they need to kill off humanity? I just realized that Ronald Moore worked on this show - no wonder that #6 reminded me of a combination of seven of nine and data. Finally saw the whole thing - you see the new Cylons twice in the entire 4 hours, and it is the same exact shot both times. You see an old Cylon, and they made the newest Cylons look like humans to probably save money on FX. I have about 1000 problems with the 4 hours - and the more I watched this show, the more I wished Space: Above and Beyond was never canceled. Well, how about too many? I worked as a producer on a sex-talk show here in Chicago during the first half of the 90's. The show host was Seka, and I got to meet all of her friends...one of them was Ron Jeremy. On top of that a bunch of our live remotes, etc were at strip clubs. Honestly, that sub-culture is one that most people would not want to be a part of - and not that many of them are that nice, nor have the ablility to lead a normal life anymore. Lets see... Intellivision (and they have two Cd-Roms of their games on the market), Vectron, Odyssey,...I can't remember if there were any others. Would you count my TRS 80? I programmed video games for that. I know there was the old TI line of computers with the tape recorders that came out in the early 80s. I vote for Intellivision. Bump N Jump ruled! SciFi is showing all four hours of the show tonight - part one begins at 6pm CST, then followed by part 2 at 8pm CST. I saw a part of the first Dune mini-series and wasn't impressed. I never bothered with Children of Dune. Taken seems like one of the better series they have made in a while. SciFi is trying to become a big-shot in the Pay-For-TV market....trying to attract bigger names, and increase profit margins. They cancel their most loved show because it had slightly lower ratings than SG-1, and then take that money to make drek like BSG and Scare Tactics. This has me worried on what direction SG:Atlantis will take - a spin off series seems unnecessary. So John, You are willing to give up someone's right to free speech because they are trying to make a profit from it? Commercial Free Speech is still a constitutional right. I agree a certain amount of responsiblity is required, therefore the law should specifically focus on some of the points in the bill: -A subject line that is true, makes sense and related to the body of the message. -A true email address to respond to. -True Opt-Out options that do not resell your email. They should also include something about spyware or other destructive, invasive attachements. A Do Not Spam list is the best option, much like the DNC list. Or a required word in the subject line that helps with filtering (such as ADV). I do not work for a company that does telemarketing, but I do make admission calls to people that have DIRECTLY asked for us to contact them. However, our company doesn't want to get hit with any fines as people find ways to make money off this new law. Therefore, any number that comes in that matches something on the DNC list is scrubbed from our database. This would include someone that I have been talking to for months, trying to help them out with their education and future plans....I am no longer allowed to call them. We have been told that if a DNC violation is logged against you, you will instantly lose your job. Mark - compare what you saw last night to "Space: Above and Beyond" and tell me what you think. I liked the original as a kid because the Cylons were cool and the toys had missles that could actually fire (well, until the recall when someone took one in the eye). Not sure I understood the story back then, but I re-watched the entire show sometime in college and really enjoyed it, despite all of the flaws it had. Now when I first heard about three years ago that someone attached to the original show was trying to start a new show and expand upon the story arc/mythology of the 12 colonies and the Cylon war....I was very interested. Then I heard how Hollywood got involved in this and complained from the start that "it wasn't sexy enough - you need more sex in this show" and the original crew were kicked off the project, and the producers found a way to throw "a couple hot blonds" into the story to attract more than just the geek fanboy....it was only then this show was picked up and greenlighted. These are the same issues that JMS was running into while making B5, but he was a bit more aggressive with the networks (thus the entire drama of the show nearly getting canceled all the time). This is also why Crusade was so terrible - they would only greenlight it if he abided this time (don't believe me? just read JMS's usenet postings). Then to find out that Farscape was canceled so junk like this could be made me despise this show even before it started to film. And SciFi has hinted that if the mini-series does well, they will start a new show off of this. (FYI - It looks like Farscape will be given a 4 hour mini-seriers to wrap up the story - only because of how well the DVDs are selling....and now they have asked JMS to write another B5 inspired show due to how well those DVDs are selling). I've only watched the first 30 minutes of this new show, and it put me to sleep. I'll give it another shot tonight, but I was not impressed that they started out the show with zero dialog and that blond Cylon making out with some guy....and I wasn't really impressed with the other 28 minutes I saw....there was nothing original, and each character was a typical scifi cliche. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Actually, I fail to understand why it does not annoy the crap out of Sangiro. Any post he makes is instantly followed by a large number of "what he said" and "Like HH said, this aint blabla blabla." I believe that I have read those phrases more than any other over here. This is just another point of view. It does not mean that I do not like Sangiro or his site, quite the contrary. Sangiro, if you feel any negative comment someone makes should be followed by an invitation to "try to start your own website" (I have seen a few of those), that is obviously your prerogative. Bear in mind that someone like TitaniumLegs offering constructive criticism is actually being quite brave, considering the blind support you have here. Personally, I refuse to follow most people, let alone follow anyone blindly (I usually bump into walls then, and that hurts). I can see that both sides in the argument have a valid point, and both sides have some very obvious negative side effects. I've been "right" in arguments in the past with former bosses - and that is why they are now former bosses. I either left, or they told me to leave. As a manager, I had to fire people that were destructive to the company despite anything else they brought to the table. I've seen the same thing happen at a DZ....why should a virtual DZ be any different. Don't forget about the tale of some bored skydivers during a winter weather hold at a certain snowed-in midwest dropzone (SDC) that has it's own pond. They wanted to see how thick the ice was and take the pickup truck for a ride on the ice. Well, it worked once....the next three times, um....it didn't Thank god for heavy duty tow straps!
