So much for that recovering economy.
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
The report coming out at the end of the month may show an increase in jobs, but I wonder if it will speak to the amount of jobs still being lost?? This will certainly be spun during the last debate, it will be interesting to see how both sides address it. http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=568&u=/nm/20041005/bs_nm/economy_layoffs_challenger_dc&printer=1 U.S. Job Cuts at 8-Month High in Sept. NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. planned job cuts soared to an eight-month high in September while new hiring rose only slightly, a report said on Tuesday. Employment consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. said employers announced 107,863 layoffs in September, 41 percent more than in September 2003 and 45 percent more than in August of this year, when 74,150 were laid off. The September figure was the largest since January 2004, when employers laid off 117,556 workers. The September figure brings third-quarter job cuts to 251,585, 19.9 percent more than the 209,895 registered in the previous quarter and 4 percent more than the 241,548 for the third quarter of 2003. Job losses in September were particularly heavy in the computer, transportation, telecommunications and consumer products industries, the report said. Adding to the glum jobs picture was the slow pace of new hiring in September. The report said employer hiring announcements revealed only 16,166 new job openings in that month compared with 132,105 in August. "Historically, the period from September 1 through December 31 is when we see the heaviest downsizing and this year appears to be on track to repeat that trend," said John Challenger, chief executive officer of the firm. "This period can also be a time for hiring since companies are looking ahead to the new year and making budget and staffing decisions. Weak hiring announcements last month are not a good indication of stronger job creation to come," he said. One Friday, the government will report on the U.S. employment situation in September. It will be the last official report before the presidential elections. Economists polled by Reuters forecast a 148,000 rise in non-farm payrolls for September compared with a 144,000 rise in August. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Just had someone walk out of my office about 30 minutes ago. He just finished his four years in the Army and just got back 3 weeks ago from spending 8 months in Iraq driving transports around. He said seeing an IED blow up near him was a daily event. He was used to bad conditions because of the time he spent in Kosovo. He said Iraq was nothing compared to that and he said any belief of a "green zone" is bullshit. He said it is very obvious that the people over there no longer want American troops around. On top of that he said that he and his fellow troops were saying just what Newbie said above....they felt the war was totall BS. He didn't mind being away from home for the last four holidays or anything like that, or being confined to a base in Kosovo for a while....but that no one really understands what is happening over there....and that everyone that he was with is voting for Kerry because of that. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I am not better off. I was unemployed a few times from downsizing. On top of that I now make A TON less than what I used to...for the same exact job. The economy is recovering? HA! I just spent the last 5 months looking for a new job and the majority of the positions wanted to offer me less than what I was making because they are hurting due to the economy. I had one job tell me I would have to bring in all my own office supplies (paper, pens, etc). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... QuoteDid you try and use one while on a hill and trying to stay at a stop sign? Thats the true test of learning a stick shift. No sliding back more then about 6 inches or popping the clutch either I was told about that and my teacher was not patient enough to try to watch me go uphill. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Not a single jump...been way too long...gonna be a while still. But do I owe beer for learning how to drive a stick shift this weekend?? I had no idea it was that easy. 15 minutes after I started I was cruising the expressway! Over 50 miles on my first trip. I still wouldn't buy one while living in the city. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Unlike you I have used the VA hosiptals...And I was served just fine. It has not slowed anything down that I can see. There were a lot of quotes in that post from people within the VA system on the administrative side. I will believe their quote to the press over your experience. My experience? Every military person that sits at my desk does nothing but complain how terrible the VA is. I see about 15 military people a week, all of them I have to send to the VA and most come back saying they won't go back due to the mishandling they have been subjected to over the last couple of years for both medical and education purposes. Bush has said that all troops deserve service. With his cutbacks, there are now troops that cannot get it. Flip flop? Hmmm...I think so. With Bush's own actions he has made things harder for troops that have been injured in any war to get the medical benefits they deserve. He may give them bullets (without armor), but he has no Dr waiting to see them back home after they get shot. That is irresponsible. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Same-Sex Marriage Amendment Fails in House
ChasingBlueSky replied to narcimund's topic in Speakers Corner
If it wasn't an issue that the majority of the people in this country cared about, it wouldn't be in the news. When it comes down to numbers the homosexual population of this country is very much a minority. However, you have heterosexual people, like me, that support equal rights across the board for all citizens of this country, without predujice or conditions. I don't care what the right or privledge is; if part of this country can't have it, then no one should. Religion does not come into play here, they won't even allow a civil union recognized by the state so benefits can be shared, etc. We are America, and whether you like it or not, so is that minority. They deserve the same rights. All excuses otherwise sound a lot like what the slave owners in this country once said about equal rights for African-Americans. I for one am very happy to see this Amendment fail. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
Including medical benefits soldiers? Closing seven VA Hospitals? Then there is this: And this: And this: And this: More: Even more: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines02/1222-01.htm http://maroon.uchicago.edu/viewpoints/articles/2003/11/21/bush_administration_.php From the NY Times: That sends a very clear message on how important the troops are to Bush. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... What will the Republicans do if Kerry wins?

Uh huh. I'm sure you're not. Nope, I'm not. Besides I have to fix dinner and do laundry still tonight. I hate doing laundry but I would rather do that then go back through the archives of this forum. I think watching paint dry would be a more productive past time. Besides, "S2" is good enough proof for me. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -

Both sides have shown a strong lack of maturity. I stand by the being banned statement. Could I go back through posts and do what you did? Yup, but then again, a good portion of the posts had to be removed because of content. Other than that I am not going to waste my time coming up with a list like you did. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... And how many of these liberals have been banned form this forum? From my reading, the childish and abusive responses have been coming from the conservatives. I'm sure Billvon could settle that arguement. "S2" is mature and intelligent? Then again, its the grown up conservatives that came up with stuff like "sKerry" and consider a tan and botox a political issue. BTW - Rush and his counterparts made serious bank spending 8 years on the air and writing books making fun of Clinton. Fox would have a field day for four years as would O'Reilly. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Guess that is why Florida is a swing state and people don't know how to use a voting station. I don't know what DZs you have been to, but I've heard plenty of politics discussed at the bonfire up here in Chicago and at Rantoul. A patriot would support the freedom of speech as it is one of the most basic rights we have as a citizen. Telling someone "S2" is closeminded and about as far as you can get from being a true American. The freedom to "whine" is something other countries don't have....well, you can but you may end up dead. Complaining about leaders has helped remove them from office in this country. Stifling an opinion because it doesn't fit in with yours is a terrible thing. Telling someone to "S2" because they are complaining about a leader they didn't vote for and feel that leader is taking their country down a terrible misguided path? That is Patriotism? Doubt it, but you have the freedom to do that because this is America. Therefore everyone else should have that same freedom to do it. If you don't like it, don't listen, change the channel or don't come to speakers corner. Blindly supporting a leader because of a title is a deadly thing. If you were in Germany would you have supported Hitler? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Notice how Kerry keeps looking down and scribbling on his notepad as though he were actually taking notes? It's something they teach you to do in debate. Take bullet point notes to have a much stronger rebutal. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Would you screw someone who you knew had an STD?
ChasingBlueSky replied to jkwon's topic in The Bonfire
Yes, and I can say that if I was with someone that I loved, or was married to them, and they picked up an STD from an accident I would stay with them, and still be intimate with them. As long as they were the person I was going to be staying with for the rest of my life. I know not everyone would do that. But then again, you only find real love in life if you are lucky. Don't get me wrong - virii scare the hell out of me. Gives me the willies (but at least that isn't an STD!). You have to be careful because even the sweetest of girls may have made a couple mistakes along the way and be infected. I believe I heard a stat that 30% of all people infected with herpes do not even know they have it! Therefore it's better to be choosey about your partners, and not pick someone that has a risky background (or slept with someone that had a risky background)....until they get tested. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... If $5/week more in taxes mean more jobs, more jobs in this country, and less unemployed....I have no problem with the tax raise. IF it also means that less money is taken from social security so I can reclaim some of my money one day when I retire...I have no problem with that either. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
