Wind tunnel - fear of height?
ChasingBlueSky replied to rainman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Fear isn't logical like that. Yes, when I first did the tunnel, there was some fear of heights involved. By the end of the session I was fine with it however. The fear was there again the 2nd time I did the tunnel as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... America doesn't know the platforms
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Poll: Americans Uninformed on Bush, Kerry By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - If matching presidential candidates to their positions on basic issues were like a "Jeopardy!" category, most Americans wouldn't earn a single dollar. More than half of those polled by the National Annenberg Election Survey didn't know President Bush alone favors allowing private investments of some Social Security money. Nearly as many didn't know that only Democratic candidate John Kerry proposes getting rid of tax breaks for the overseas profits of U.S. companies. Importing drugs from Canada? That's a Kerry issue, but nearly half either didn't know or thought Bush also supported changing federal law to allow for drug imports from Canada. Making abortions more difficult to obtain? Nearly one-third of those surveyed didn't know Bush alone supports more restrictions on abortion. Eliminating the tax on estates? Two-thirds didn't know that's a Bush proposal. After two years of presidential campaigning and hundreds of millions of dollars in political ads, many voters remained clueless about those and other policies, according to the survey. Annenberg analyst Kate Kenski blamed the candidates for not stressing their points of view and the news media for focusing on character assessments and the race itself. "It's disappointing that people don't know where the candidates stand, given how much money's been spent on the campaigns," said Kenski, a senior research analyst. "In the absence of good information, voters guess and often guess incorrectly." The poll of 1,189 adults was taken from Sept. 21-26 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. ___ On the Net: National Annenberg Election Survey: http://www.naes04.org _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... btw - make sure you have the latest update on Black Ice. There was a decent hole that was found in it, and has been patched by the company. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Depends on the company. If S&S makes it, it will be air launched. Superman at Magic Mountain, all the Vertical Velocity rides, Volcano, and the one Gimp was talking about at Cedar Point are all LIM (magnets). This circuit launched coaster is still new. Hell, the Superman Ride in CA (400ft) was down most of the year as was the one at Cedar Point (and a bad injury). Hope this one out east works out better. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Always been my favorite as well. I'm waiting for "Iraq really isn't that big of a deal but i found this new shinny country to invade!" to come out of GW's mouth. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Yup. But it is the American way of doing things. This is a step in the right direction of preserving what this country is all about. I think the ACLU might just get a donation from me again. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... IIRC that led him to locking away and coding a bunch of his notes and ideas so the war machine or anyone else couldn't preverse his thoughts anymore. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

It doesn't matter what is really happening Bill. Just like it didn't matter that we didn't have real proof to go to war. What matters is GW keeps going on the air and selling apple pie and the American dream and how we will bring it to the rest of the world and keep us safe. His nationalistic and patriotic rhetoric is all it takes for most people to believe him it seems. Despite the real proof other wise, even from the new CIA that GW set up. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... That's war. But wait, I thought it was mission accomplished and the war was over? Last I checked, we have lost control of about 4 major cities in Iraq. Seems to me that has the war machine in reverse. That's ok, if we keep throwing American troops at them to catch bullets I'm sure it will get better. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Usually the greatest minds do not want their thoughts to be turned to destructive means (re:Einstein). Generally it is the idiots that say - hey! we can kill lots more people with this stuff! Um sure, go ahead and wait outside, it shouldn't take me too long to walk to Texas _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Or maybe the ratio of intelligent humans will increase further over time. And those that prefer violence will slowly start to fade away. That is, if the idiots don't blow us up first. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Yup, that's why after 1000's of years of wars and fighting, this is now no need for armies, guns or people that can fight. Thanks for the insite. Long term I said. Evolution doesn't happen overnight. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

That is because those are the one-dimensional idiots that can't see past their fist or gun. The world would be a better place without them. All of them. Those with the brains and the ability to think will always be in control in the long run. Those that like to fight will just kill themselves off. Almost poetic. Funny, you could almost imagine an insurgant in Iraq saying the same speech. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... John Kerry: The Candidate for ALL Americans
ChasingBlueSky replied to Jimbo's topic in Speakers Corner
Mark, it is almost pointless to argue. Military types prefer the agressive steps instead of further diplomacy. Victory is their goal, not diplomacy or peace. They feel that this is more like an old traditional war where screwups were ok (there is always another hill) as long as you won the war. However, the current world situation is much more complex than that, more so than even the cold war where it was nation vs nation. I found this in Newsweek regarding the current state of the world and it will explain it better than I can: "It has a military dimension, to be sure, but in large part it's a political, economic and social struggle for hearts and minds. In such a conflict, the question of where and how military force is used is crucial. Its battlefield success always have to be balanced against political effects. An understanding of culture and nationalism becomes key because the goal is more complex than simple military victory. It is creating like-minded societies. Thus, if you are not sophisticated in your application of power, you can find yourself in a situation like Vietnam where you win every battle but lose the war. One can argue that this is precisley the situation in Iraq, where America could easily crush the insurgency but at a political price that would make victory uterly counterproductive. Beyond Iraq and Afghanistan the conflict becomes more complex and less military. In Iran and North Korea the military option is more bluster than fact. And how does one defuse militant extremism in say, Indonesia, Morocco and Egypt? By working with those governments to find terrorists, and with those societies to help modernize them." GW is treating this war like any other, and his bravado, lack of political moves and pure might to force democracy and secularism down the throat of a people that prefer their religious lifestyle. He will not take the subtle route and work with the country to help rid them of the cancer they have hidden away. He has shown that he goes into an argument with guns drawn and ready to shoot the person who disagrees with him. Would Kerry be a perfect War/military president? Not sure, but his desire to have a foreign policy is much more attractive than someone who's bravado is making the world, and thus this country, a very unsafe place. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... But it's a fake tan. So he will look fake warmer and fake healthier on TV. There's a strategy. He probably got the fake tan a few days ahead of time so it would be more even by Thursday night. Ever since the Nixon/Kennedy debate all candidates have paid attention to appearance. I'm sure GW has had some work done on him the last couple days as well. While you are at it, point out how all those female politicians that wear high heels, makeup, nail polish, shoulder pads, etc as being fake. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... -
A lie is a lie, not a chane of position. Thats a stretch. It's simple. He wanted to look warmer on TV, and to be look drastically different from Bush. Tan comes across as healthier on TV. And what the hell is the big deal about someone getting tan? Now that is a real issue. Maybe all the attention to this will help the real issues get talked about? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... which is better windtunnel or jumping ?
ChasingBlueSky replied to DOCsa's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No doubt - the tunnel does help. No argument there, and if someone has the money to be better than me by either jumping more or using the tunnel, have at it! I've done the tunnel and found how humbling it can be when you realize the bad habits you have. But as you mentioned - even with bad habits some of those people are on some tough dives and get invited to other ones, including record attempts. The time they have in the air just can't be beat with everything else it entails. The issue I have is when people tell anyone "you have to do the tunnel! It is the only way you can get better." You know better than I do, how that isn't true. The tunnel should be used as just another tool to help get better, but it should not be the main way of teaching skills. I know I wouldn't want a tunnel rat with amazing skills and very few jumps to be on a big way with me. And there will be people that claim "But I have 100 hours of tunnel time so I should be ok on this jump!" There needs to be a balance, which you did hint to in your reply. I don't know if all of these tunnels being built will be around for a long time. The one in Eloy will be an interesting to watch as far as an investment since it seems it may mostly be supported by jumpers instead of tourists. I would also be curious on how the Perris tunnel is doing on ROI and the profit margin and if they are making as much in thier first year as the Orlando tunnel did. With only about 33,000 active jumpers in this country I don't see windtunnels happening all over the place. There will be two camps, those that can afford to travel to a tunnel and those that can't. Programs like AFP and coaches are going to be the best bet for the latter folks. Don't get me wrong, I like the tunnel. It did help me. But I doubt you will see me making a trip just to do tunnel time. If there happens to be a tunnel nearby and I have some cash, I'll buy some time. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... That won't change either. Ray mentioned at WFFC that he had to spend many dollars to have those seats pass with fireproof specs to make the FAA happy. I think he said the benches alone cost $6000 and that he has a second set as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Can you get a second adjuster out there to see if someone could repair it? For the money you may get for totaling it, you may be able to put it towards repairs instead. Hoping the store is ok! When will you find out? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
