  1. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1503&ncid=1503&e=16&u=/afp/20041115/ts_afp/china_tower BEIJING, (AFP) - The southern Chinese boomtown of Guangzhou plans to put itself in the record books by building the tallest tower in the world, with work set to begin next month, officials involved in the project said. The Guangzhou TV Tower, which is expected to soar between 580-600 metres (1,914-1,980 feet) above ground, would surpass the current record holder, the 553-metre CN Tower in Toronto, built in 1976. Located on the banks of the Pearl River, the new TV tower will occupy 84,880 square metres in the city's premier business district of Tianhe. Thirteen domestic and overseas companies have been bidding for the right to design the landmark structure in Guangdong province with the shortlist now down to three. Huang Jiatian, deputy director at the Headquarters for the Construction of the Guangzhou New TV Tower, said the companies were ARUP Qualification of Britain, Architecture Studio of France and Leon Wohl Hage Wernik of Germany. "We haven't decided on the design of the tower yet so the project may be delayed a bit but we expect the project to be open to tourists by 2008," he told AFP. "The TV tower will be a symbol of Guangzhou, a tourist attraction combining cultural and entertainment facilities," said Huang. The reason for the height was primarily related to the television transmitter, he added. An official surnamed Luo from the Construction Committee of Guangzhou said around 200 families would have to be moved to make way for the project. "Relocation work has already begun and the building work will begin at the beginning of December," he told AFP. According to the China Daily, the project will cost more than 1.5 billion yuan (180 million dollars). The tower will include sky gardens, bars and other tourist facilities and be illuminated at night. Guangzhou's old TV Tower will be demolished with the Guangdong provincial TV stations moving into the new building. "It will help further raise Guangzhou's standing at home and abroad and help promote the city's tourism in the years to come," Chen Wangqiang, from the Guangzhou Association of Architecture, told China Daily. TV towers have often become architectural symbols and tourist attractions in many cities around the world, including one in another Chinese city, Shanghai. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. Or see this book: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0060746874/qid=1100510935/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-6141979-4128708?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 The Earth, in the long run, will be fine. Even if we destroy it and the changes we make kill off humanity, the Earth will rebound eventually. We just won't be around to see it. The focus of envitonmentalism shouldn't be about saving the Earth - it should be about saving humanity by treating the Earth better. If you were to personalize it, more people would listen. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  3. Well, hell. Let's just go bomb all of them now because you don't feel good about it. How about we wait and let the negotiations play out and see what happens in a years time. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. And wasn't that giving up early due to sore arms? BTW - very cool S-Fly ya got there. 10:2:0 $10 is all I paid for a ride to full altitude because the pilot forgot I paid for a hop n pop. Nothing like planning a belly jump on the way to altitude with a freeflyer and have it work out great. Two jumps on Saturday - damn it was great to finally get back into the air...first jumps since Labor Day weekend. Thanks to Sunny for lending me her rig. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  5. Apparently you missed it the first time I said I don't. On top of that, its an apple to oranges comparison. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  6. Exactly!! For example: Bush winning the election! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  7. Well, that took longer than I thought. Take a look at my original post in my thread and I correctly predicted that some Bush supporter would bust out with this statement. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 8. She will have done over 100 minutes of tunnel time in the last two weeks between this and the time in Perris during the bigway camp. Not bad huh? I'm thinking its going to be her back more than anything else. IIRC, her time is late at night, so they may be there after your time. Then again, I could be wrong. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  9. Indeed, any new system or software that gets released has hackers picking it apart within minutes in most cases. That's why if there was one who picked it apart, there would be 20 right behind him/her doing the same thing. Back when the Apple II was king, hackers were an outcast-type-anomoly. That's not really the case anymore. Hacking has gotten harder over the years due the increasing complexity of the hardware and software. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. If all of the machines were affected by someone within Diebold it would be easy enough to get access to all machines since they would be coding the OS it runs on. A typical hacker working from outside the company would certainly have a difficult time making any impact on a larger scale. It's hard to say what variables the manufacture used at the plant. Most machines (from my understanding) arrived onsite to the voting judges ready to be used. To a certain extent, I agree with that. Attacking those that voted for Bush is the wrong way to go. Half of this population is fed up and has very little trust in Bush as a leader. Many of us feel, with good reasons, that he is a cheat, liar and dangerous to this country. Also, we do feel that he did manipulate both of his elections. Transference of that anger/frustration comes out in many ways and it sounds like those folks out there have wrongly pointed their anger at those that voted for Bush. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 11. What good is it to exam the output if the process to produce it is flawed or corrupted? Yes, obvious irregularities would stick out. But that process produces an error margin, maybe 3-5%. A smart coder could use that error margin to produce enough votes across an entire state to generate quite a few extra votes. Now the real question is - could that be done in such a way that it couldn't be traced? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. And the scared homophobic majority are the ones trying to force their opinion on everyone else. The problem is that even these rights were denied by the election. Then let the government define the rules for civil union and let the religions define marriage. Our government is there to defend the rights of the citizens, esp the minority. It's not there to take them away because the thought of something upsets their reliegious beliefs!!! I'm wondering when in his next four years Bush will claim they have "cooties?" This argument always worries me. People are actually trying to justify why it is ok to discriminate against a segment of our society. This is a slippery slope. Newly elected Senator (R) Jim Demint from South Carolina does not want homosexuals to be teachers (a large part of his campaign platform was against gay marriage). The funny part about that is SC has the third worst education system in the country. Nice way to focus on the real issues. Tom Coburn is starting to focus on homosexuality as one of the biggest problems in his state! Wow, who knew that things like the budget, education and the environment should take a back seat to homosexuality. The Christian-Right Elitist attitude is scary. And they say they are the ones with "morals" and "values" - how insulting to the other half of the country! To claim that someone doesn't have morals because they don't side with you on ugly discrimination??? From what it seems, 49% of this country has stronger values towards the indidual freedoms of the citizen than the elitist republicans. How many more threads are you going to post this in? We get the point. This is going to be your argument on why its ok to discriminate and be unAmerican? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. haha! Does it make me a geek if a programming joke made me laugh? Yup, a small sub-routine that would replace every third vote (for example) could be very easy to hide in thousands of lines of code. But I'm all for a third party neutral line-by-line examination of the code to prove me wrong. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 14. You said "good riddance." That is different than just not feeling sorry for the person that killed themselves. The issue wasn't you telling anyone how much pain they should live with. Would you tell her family "good riddance" or say she was pathetic as well? Would you tell the fiancee of the dead man the same thing - would you look her in the eye and say "good riddance" to her? I'm sorry - could you please provide the quote of me saying I assumed he killed himself because of the election? I said it was sad he wasn't able to find the help or ask for the help needed. I also said that no matter what he was looking for attention due to the location of his suicide and that no matter what it would make the news. It was the newspaper and his family that came up with reasons. People that are grieving will try to rationalize the pain, and the media had a field day with their rationalization. I'm going to make a wild guess that his family didn't call the reporters, but instead they called and bugged the family for a response. I never once made this about politics, the title of this thread and the story came from the AP news wire and I just passed it on. I expressed no opinion in the original post. Again, where did I say that? A violent suicide is never sane (and this is a separate issue from assisted suicide, so please save that for the thread on that) . It's usually an extreme response to outside negative influences or a result of a diseased mind. I've saved a few people from killing themselves by working on a hotline or calling the cops on someone about to do something stupid. There is always a chance to help them get beyond that true moment of despair, if they can get the right help and a sane voice talking/listening to them. It's amazing what compassion can do for the soul. I'll extend a helping hand to anyone. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  15. On a computer? Yes. You can hide anything you want within a computer - it can be programmed anywhere you want (on a software or hardware level)within the product and you can also program it to erase any history of wrong doing. Computers do not make mistakes, the people that program them do. I found it interesting that many of these machines produced no proof of the votes cast. I have yet to see a neutral party fully exam any of the eVoting machines out there. Most of the tests were done either by the company that made them or the local voting officials in test runs. There are more standards/laws and examinations on electronic slot machines than there are for voting machines. I've beta tested a bunch of different software over the years. I'd love to get my hands on one of these machines and see how easy it would be to produce irregularities in vote counts. Long before this election came along I mentioned the issues I had with the Diebold company and how ODell had promised to bring votes to Bush. I thought it was a conflict of interests. It wasn't until early 2004 that ODell promised he would stop campaigning for GW when it was mentioned he could lose the contract to provide the machines. There have been enough stories on voting machine errors to issue an examination. I'm sure some Bush supporter will come in and say "get over it" or some bs like that. Whatever. If you are that confident that nothing was wrong, then you should push even harder than anyone else to make sure these machines were not doing something illegal. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. Interesting - so you feel those that push the edge in skydiving are morons as well? I have recently seen some of your posts saying how much this is needed. You may want to double check your broadcast history. Sullivan didn't allow Elvis to show his hips on TV, and Sullivan banned Morrison from his show. Ed wanted status quo and those acts made history because they defied the biggest host of the day and the current standards. I'm thinking since this was my major in college and I was in broadcasting that I know just a few things about this area. I was just trying to further educate you. There are some really good books on this topic. There are no real defined laws. Most of them are guidlines. How can you follow these guidlines if they are defined by dynamic grey lines???Yes, I like to push the edge in all areas - thinking/acting outside of the box is something I encourage. The problem is there are tons of double standards. I know for a fact that I put stuff on the air that was far worse than anything Howard Stern has ever done - I had a couple have sex on the air, I played Metallica's "So Fucking What" in the middle of the day, etc...not once did my host, radio station, or myself ever get a fine or complaint. I will say that there is always the right time/place to push the envelope...timing is everything. You mentioned that people didn't have a chance to turn the channel before the Super Bowl boob - but people complain about things they know will be on the air anyhow! People continue to turn in to things that they know will upset them and then they still complain!!! Um, I do? Actually, I don't and that assumptioin is wrong. I have never blamed cops for doing their job. Also, apple to oranges here. Speeding is not safe and puts people at serious risk - it is very irresponsible. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 17. And taking them out turns them into a martry for the cause, or even a new prophet! Someone else will then come along and take their place and continue the cause. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 18. Shock value huh? What if some people call it pushing the envelope? Once upon a time Lucy had to have a seperate bed from her husband on a tv show. If they happened to be on the same bed, their feet had to touch the floor or they could get fined. Other "morons" that pushed the envelope on TV were Elvis and Jim Morrison. Because of them, we have relxed standards compared to the past. They helped changed the current community standards. Go check out a book on mass communication law and you will find plenty of examples of "morons" that didn't want to be confined anymore. For example - did you know there was no problem with the seven deadly words until George Carlin made a comedy routine out of them? To people in the media, "current community standards" is a joke. It changes so quick and so often that it isn't really a standard. Do you only support pushing the edge in skydiving? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  20. I just broke the coat out for the first time this week. I was in shorts last weekend. If the weather holds, I might be able to get back into the air this weekend. I'm tempting fate with the injury but I need my knees in the breeze. I will have to borrow a rig since mine is out of date. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  21. What's the deal on adult Elasti-girl's big ass and thighs? Think about it . . . If she can be -any- shape, why doesn't she have a better rack and why is her ass so fat? She is a big fan of Sir Mix A Lot? How about all the other women in that movie - twigs!! ok, I can't remember what the "we will do a shot" was in reference to. someone remind me _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 22. The SDC events calendar is usually out before the end of the year. You can email manifest@skydivechicago.com to see if they have it done already. The WFFC always starts the first weekend of August. 23. And better decrease the surplus population? I feel sorry for this guy and his friends/family. I wish it could have been caught on time. I would never wish this sort of thing on anybody or their family. I don't care what the reasons are, what the motivations are, etc. This is a bad as Tuna enjoying the illness of Mrs. Kerry because of political reasons Do you feel this way about all people that commit suicide? We did lose a good skydiving friend this year because of suicide - do you feel the same way about her and her family? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 25. You can relate to a shaved sheep??? All of those blantant references to sex are family? I was suprised at just how many references there were. I feel that Pixar has outdown themself yet again. This is a fantastic movie! I love how each movie has its own unique feel (however I am worried that "Cars" looks bad already). Iron Giant, another movie from this director has long been one of my favorite movies. Yet I'm thinking he has a serious fetish for waifish women. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
