  1. You know John, when the Magic Negro article was printed in the LA Times back in January 07 there was a fair bit of validity to the premise. The machine was pushing this guy hard and he had not made really any policy speeches of any kind. That is no longer true. Obama has laid out his plans in a number of areas (maybe not the Middle East policy, but that is a pretty tough nut). He is no longer the blank slate that raises considerable questions about the motives of those pushing him. To use the term today only displays your hate. My question is John, do you hate everyone who disagrees with your world view, or do you hate black people? or both?
  2. Gaza is between 4 and 7.5 miles wide. It would be like clearing out the parts of Tijuana that are close enough to the US to provide illegal immigrants; not practical.
  3. The best route is by far to take a tunnel integrated AFF course. You can fly to Florida, North Carolina, California or Arizona. Alternatively you can dig around and find someone to coach you in one of the two tunnels in UK and then fly with you to Spain for AFF. RAPS is fine, I learned on the Canadian version, but it's main advantage is cost not quality.
  4. I would like to proclaim us more enlightened but the truth is we are simply more obedient. When our government told us we were going metric in the 70s there was just as much bellyaching as in the US. The difference is the gov ignored us and legislated it into effect. We still use both in Canada because everything we make is for export to the US. I remember in the 80s I worked on a pair of sister ships (identical blueprints). They had Finnish (metric) engines feeding American (imperial) gearboxes. The generators were Cats (imperial). The tricky part was one hull was built in Vancouver (imperial) and the other in Japan (metric). At the beginning of the current financial crises the chattering classes were going on about how this was the end of the US's financial preeminence in the world. I am hearing less of that now, but if the emerging markets do lead the way out we may see oil traded in Euros/cubic metre. If that happens it may signal American acquiescence to reason. Who knows they may even learn how to spell metre.
  5. If they can find a good way to implement it I think it is a great idea. Sadly I cannot think of a way to prevent fraud, or even keep it down. The GPS in every vehicle for Big Brother to peruse doesn't thrill me. That aside what is wrong with taxing mileage? The correct way to do it would be to make it a function of weight and axles as well as tie it to emissions testing. In Vancouver the Air Care system already gives a nice readout on CO CO2 SO2 and VOx per km driven. It is currently on a pass fail system (variable standard so larger engines are allowed to produce more emissions), but a pay to play system would be much more economically efficient. Don't like your rate? Fix your car, buy a more efficient one, or drive it less, your call. What it does is treat the atmosphere as consumable commodity that is not subject to the tragedy of the commons. This system also treats the roadways the same. The next step would be to sell insurance by the km. The truth is if you take the train to work one day a week you have a reduced chance of a traffic accident; your insurance company currently cannot capture that savings. Every time you get in your car it is a consumption decision. What this does is internalize some of the current externalities in your decision. As a conservative Max I think the more you really think about this, the more you will like it. It turns two public resources, the road and the air, into user (or despoiler) pay.
  6. Well, Well, Well. I guess the revolution didn't change that much after all.
  7. When did you take your survey? I wish I were so sure to know what more then a billion people are thinking at all times. Your Special aren’t you? Huh? A billion Arabs? I don't think so. Hyperbole doesn't help your argument (and no, I don't give a fuck if they use it too, it still detracts from your argument). This conflict is not 60 years old. Using that a a starting point is no more valid than using 1975 as a starting point in Iran and saying the revolution had no right whatsoever to overthrow the Shaw, or that the US has always been in Iraq so there is no valid argument for those who oppose their presence. Until the Palestinians, and the rest of the Arab world concedes not only the fact, but the right of the Jews to exist in Israel the conflict will continue. Since that isn't going all that well let's hope that concession is soon.
  8. Did Gaza suddently stop having a shoreline? As far as I know Israel has never stopped controlling Gaza's sea traffic.
  9. As an officer of the court you (nor the AG) may not present a scenario of fact you know to be false. Are you similarly prohibited from arguing a legal scenario you believe to be invalid? It seems to me that to do so would be to attempt to subvert the constitution. If the AG truly believes that the amendment is not constitutionally valid then he has an obligation not to defend it. This does not thwart the will of the people as there is contradiction in the expressed will of the people: the constitution as written and the proposed amendment.
  10. I almost pointed out the anti smoking referendum as a counterpoint but then I remembered we are talking about Pinal county aren't we.
  11. Sheriff + good publicist + "persecution for standing up for the people against 'the man' " = State Attorney General bid.
  12. But as an elected servant is there not a limit to their power over him?
  13. Or increase the planet supply. We gotta get off the rock.
  14. Which would allow us to spend more energy making more babies. When the world gets too crowded, God in his wisdom, gives us wars. -Archie Bunker
  15. So the question is, is the Sec o' State's signature present on the document or not?
  16. Yes, there is no doubt that we are currently in a "carrying capacity deficit." Couple that with an increasing population we need to change both our supply and demand equations if we wish to avoid an environmental market correction. The pace of technological advance is simply not keeping up.
  17. So is that part of the problem or part of the solution? You talk about the process of nature, well famine is a natural part of the system; so is our struggle to defeat it.
  18. We can support everyone we currently have. The US could support twice it's current population without increasing food consumption. If you don't believe me go check out your local all you can eat. If North America, Australia and Argentina lowered our protein to carbohydrate ratios that would help too. On matters other than food technology can increase the holding capacity of the planet greatly. Green power production is reducing pollution/Joule greatly. Of course the result is just more production not less pollution, but we have found tech fixes in the past. If you are old enough to remember LA in the 70's you will know what I mean. More recent examples are a reduction of acid rain in the great lakes region and the CFC treaty.
  19. My guess is that he will not get support from his GOP colleagues. This is not a vote getter.
  20. If the Secretary of State's signature is required there is an assumption that there is a purpose to that requirement. Either that they have a political veto (unlikely) or that they are certifying that the appointment is legal (more likely). If the latter is so then by withholding it she is asserting that the appointment is not legal. My guess is that the presumptive appointee (not the appointee until the signature is present) has no standing to challenge her decision, the governor would have to. The courts are in fact the right place for this to go as it is a political turf war.
  21. Could not disagree more. A ZP 9 cell rectangular is perhaps the hardest opening class of canopy there is. A lightly loaded Spectre or Silhouette would be a far better choice. If you want to stick with a "Sabre class" canopy I would recommend a Pilot or Sapphire II over a Sabre II for soft openings.
