  1. Up here it is unusual for the temperature to be above 5C at altitude and it will be below 0 for most of the season. I put gloves on students for almost all jumps from the top. If you learn to skydive with gloves on it just isn't a problem.
  2. I think the question USPA needs to ask is what's in it for them. We are talking about a commercial enterprise who wants to change the rules for their show. If USPA acquiesces will skydiving in the US benefit? We know there is an increased chance of bad publicity, but if that doesn't happen will the sport get a positive hit. Personally I don't think so. The industry has done well over the last twenty years or so by demonstrating skydiving as an exciting, yet reasonably safe activity. Those who want to push the image of it being a crazy, death defying act for ultra cool heroes are free to do so, but should not have USPA sanction. JMHO
  3. Is this on purpose? Irony anyone? (Just kidding. If nobody else picks up on this I'm going to feel like an ass) Where is the irony? As far as I know the Aryan Nation is a legal organization, just like the KKK. Call it the price of freedom.
  4. Yep. My first full time job was in a coal mine where one shift had a 5 year 'no time lost accident' record. While I was there I knew of three accidents that saw the casualty continue to come to work while he healed and get full pay just to keep the record going.
  5. You're wrong. In the USA, you must pass an English proficiency exam. If you want to live in the USA, you must be able to function with the language. If you don't want to do that, go back to where you came from. My point is that when people get to the US they are a long way from their citizenship exam. Yes they have to learn English to prosper, but that does not mean they have to forget their other languages. This is not about whether English will be present, it is about whether Arabic will be prohibited. No one in the article is talking about exclusively Arabic curriculum, they are talking about a bilingual one. These students are being taught English. It is a question of method. This reminds me of the way we tried to assimilate the natives in Canada fifty years ago. The nuns and priests would beat the children if they uttered a word in 'the Devil's tongue.' The attempt failed to do anything except raise a generation of damaged and bitter people.
  6. You need to speak English in order to become a citizen. Doesn't have to be great English, but it's part of the test. The issue has nothing to do with becoming a citizen. It has to do with a fifteen or sixteen year old who doesn't speak english. Is the best plan for them to continue to learn arts an sciences while they learn the new language, or for them to retard their education completely until they learn english and then resume their education. If the child is six or seven I don't think it is as much of an issue. They will learn english quickly and carry on. For adolescents it is a bit trickier. The stigma of being left behind, or not fitting in is a much more salient factor. Many young people will put their head down and work harder, but many will have a harder time adapting. These youths of course are much higher risk for anti-social behavior. Drugs, gangs, and yes, extremist ideologies.
  7. geeze must be nice, we're staying in the cold at least until the weekend then it warms up a bit I just heard that Saskatoon has been -25 or worse for a month straight now. The crazy thin is it's the only place on the continent where house prices are still rising.
  8. That's why I said some Furies were without them.
  9. Exactly. We know where the taboo came from, and it made perfect sense. With modern contraception and abortion availability the taboo is no longer necessary. That doesn't mean, however, that I expect it to disappear any time soon. We are well aware why the taboo against eating pork came about in the middle east, and we know how to get around it. That knowledge has done little to erase that policy in two cultures that agree on little else.
  10. Supposed to thaw here this afternoon for the first time in about 9 weeks.
  11. Well since the Fury is TSOd I guess the answer to the original stabilizer question is yes, some Furies do not have stabilizers.
  12. On the other hand, on small, Cessna drop zones it can be done with ease. I jump at a small drop zone and hop & pops at the top are very common. As far as the safety aspect. If you look at the cause of fatalities in our sport the lack of a good parachute is not the big problem. As you gain experience the extra altitude during opening is of rapidly diminishing value above about 3000'. Choosing a conservative canopy is a much more effective way to change the odds.
  13. Disagree. Intelligence is a combination of genetics and environment. The well stimulated child does not just grow up better informed, they are smarter. Many mentally retarded people got that way due to developmental issues both pre and post natal.
  14. I thought the same thing, at first. But that would be saying that someone working for some company cannot have an opinion. And no one complains when Bill Booth posts on here. JerryBaumchen True, but the OP specifically mentioned he wasn't looking for brand recs. The truth is Klingeme didn't even bother to answer the guy's question. he could have at least disguised his sales pitch by telling the guy which mode which are conveniently available on the same model of Vigil 2 he would recommend.
  15. Before the playoffs started last year the Giants knew the road to the Superbowl went through Dallas. They laid awake at night thinking about how to beat the Cowboys. The same is true for the Ravens. Those guys knew Pittsburgh was in the way the minute they lost the second game three (four?) weeks ago. When you beat someone it is hard to concentrate on how to play them better on an individual by individual, play by play basis. When you lose it keeps you up.
  16. The Cowboys beat the Giants twice last season. Beating a team three times in one year is very tough.
  17. That's simple: -229.7. Ask me something hard. Sure, can you provide the mathematical formula you derived that temperature from? ASSUMPTION: By "twice as cold" you mean half as warm. 0F=255.22K 255.22K/2=127.61K=229.7F.
  18. You should try to jump a rig with double wide leg straps. If that is not possible try one on, do it up, and walk around a bit. Personally I hate double wide legstraps. They do not suit my skinny legs and skinny ass well at all. When i walk around they pinch my balls (in a bad way). Does your instructor friend have double wides on his infinity? Either way take a look at the thickness of his leg straps verses the (older?) student rigs.

  20. PA by an anonymous poster on post #2. First post was a group attack on a small group of people many of us know personally. I SAY BAN HIM!
  21. That is a different question than the one in the poll. One is a question of correlation, the other, one of causality.
  22. There are often repercussions for posting about incidents, particularly for staff members.
