Things That Just Have Me Scratching My Head Saying, "WTF"
Andrewwhyte replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
I think that among the large group of Americans who are willing to give Obama a blank check you will not find a lot of members of Congress. They will still defend their turf, Republican and Democrat alike. -
Why is it ridiculous? Churchill made a decision that was deliberately intended to lure the Germans away from bombing air-bases and towards bombing civilians. The price was horrible but it was probably necessary to win the Battle of Britain. Hamas cannot win a conventional war against Israel so they have adopted guerrilla tactics that are deliberately intended to lure the Israelis into killing civilians and thus losing western support as well as firming it up in the Arab world. I think it is a legitimate comparison.

Would the USA ever adopt the metric system, realisticly?
Andrewwhyte replied to rhys's topic in Speakers Corner
It's like talking to a wall! There's nothing special about 39.xx inches as the length for the meter. It could have been twice as long, or half as long, and worked out just as well. (the mass of a gram would change, of course) And this is why is it arbitrary. You are correct. The metre is arbitrary. Nothing else in the metric system is. On the other hand the arbitrary units of the imperial system include the inch, foot, yard, mile, ounce, pound, ton, fluid ounce, cup, horsepower,.... the list goes on. -
That is the most ridiculus example yet. Comparing Arafat to Churchill??!!! Try to keep up. Arafat was not a member of Hamas.

Right. You don't have to say millimetre. You could say 'thousanth of a metre' (or 'thou' like people do for thousanth of an inch). People rarely say gigagrams; they say tonnes. -

Metric time has not been adopted, nor has it been proposed as far as I know (except in the original Battlestar Galactica). "Give me a centon Starbuck." -

The point is the entire system is based upon one arbitrary metric, the number of digits on our hands, and the properties of water. The American system is a collection of arbitrary measurements. -
Would the USA ever adopt the metric system, realisticly?
Andrewwhyte replied to rhys's topic in Speakers Corner
The fact is it already has taken over most of the world. When Rome faded away so did their gods. Dominant powers rarely accept cultural incursions from abroad. As long as the US doesn't need to change they won't. -

I thought it was the kilogram that was arbitrary with the metre being related to the kilogram. -

Sorry, that's as good as it gets. -

No. Calling an engine 1.5024 gallons would be retarded as engines have never been referred to in that way. Referring to an engine in LITERS is also retarded. Engine cylinder displacement is properly referred to as VOLUME, not a measure of mass. Uhhm, Liters(sic) are a measure of volume. GRAMS are a measure of mass. -
If the two nation policy ever does come to fruition Arafat will be remembered as one of the key enablers. As far as Hamas not caring about the Palestinian people, would you say that Churchill did not care about the British people? His decision to bomb German cities cost many, many civilian English lives, but it was essential to victory.

No it doesn't. It is an example a logical fallacy parallel to the one you gave. >By the same token proving that one species can give rise to another does >not prove that all life on earth evolved from earlier forms. Quite true. It's like trying to figure out what planet your new roommate is from. Sure, he might be from Neptune - you can't prove he isn't - but the smart money is on him being born on Earth. Absolutely. However if you go back and re-read the response you gave to missg8tordivr you said Then you said to me So you are arguing that: 1. Evolution of new species is a proven fact. 2. The origin of species is interchangeable with evolution. but with the example of the guy from Neptune you say 3. Either it is exactly the same as the observed evolution and thus proven, or it is different and not proven, even though that's where the smart money is. This was my point (and hers too I believe).

Metre. It's spelled metre. A meter is a measuring device. -
The truth is that no matter how many times the Israelis said they would not negotiate with Arafat, they eventually did.

Senate Seat Soap Opera (to be continued...)
Andrewwhyte replied to tbrown's topic in Speakers Corner
I disagree. He is not trying to sue his way into office, he is arguing that he was elected and asking the judicial branch to adjudicate. It beats the hell out of the alternative which involves shooting your opponent or his supporters before the vote. -
What would be a "false fact" that is being presented? None, that sentence was background for the following one to ensure you got my meaning. As for the rest of it, my bad, it did not occur to me that the AG would actually make the case that the amendment was correctly enacted yet still illegal under the California constitution. As for it not being legal under the US constitution, that is a bit trickier. My argument for not defending what you do not believe to be lawful still stands,.. I think.

It never 'weighs' 1 kg, it masses 1 kg. Weight is a fickle concept that varies with altitude. -
The gear is not stolen.

Because it can be demonstrated that human reproduction can be achieved in a petri dish does not mean that that is how I came about. By the same token proving that one species can give rise to another does not prove that all life on earth evolved from earlier forms. It gives good evidence in favour, but does not establish it as fact.
-
I think the theory of the origin of species is separate from either abiogenesis or evolution as we have directly observed, and also needs to be recognized as not proven.
-
I can dispute it ... or at least muddy the proverbial miasmic waters. Perhaps if you re-consider the hypothesis a little you may see where/how compassion/altruism benefits the long term survival of the human species (think about reproduction and enabling your progeny to survive and reproduce in the future just to start, along with cooperative building). And that's not just speculation on my part. The disparate fields of sociobiology, philosophy, evolutionary psychology, & economic game theory deal directly with this. Just a few examples off the top of my head (when I first put responded to another thread
