Will the US Regain Respect in World Opinion Again
Andrewwhyte replied to Amazon's topic in Speakers Corner
Uh huh, and the fact that the long standing softwood lumber dispute was settled within 90 days of the Conservatives being elected was just a coincidence right? Cheney visited Fort Mac all those times because he likes the unfettered nature around the place. -
the attitude towards safety in this sport compared to in others
Andrewwhyte replied to DARK's topic in Safety and Training
Part of it is the concentration of capital in our sport. Every DZ has one person with more to lose than the others (everyone can lose their life, but I'm talking about serious stuff, money), the DZO. Not always but often the DZO has been around a while and either through hard knocks or just natural selection they tend to be more conservative than the average jumper. This is why the sport has a conservative edge that is not always present in other activities. -

USPA Membership Dues& Rating Fees going up?
Andrewwhyte replied to chriswelker's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you were to set a per jump fee schedule I guarantee that DZOs would not be honest in reporting their jump numbers. The idea that $400/anum is "totally out of proportion with dropzones income" indicates you think that USPA should be taxing DZs rather than selling them a service. I think that attitude would spell the end of the gM program fairly quickly. If you feel that way you should probably form a "socialist skydivers" slate for USPA elections next year, but other than that, it ain't gonna happen. -

Will the US Regain Respect in World Opinion Again
Andrewwhyte replied to Amazon's topic in Speakers Corner
I didn't vote because I don't think it is a binomial distribution. I have lost a lot of respect for the US, it's leaders, and it's population over the last seven or eight years, but I have never lost absolute respect. I gained respect for the Leaders of the US greatly last Tuesday, but it's not like I'm lining up for Kool-aid. My respect for the American population has actually been on the rise for a couple of years as the people seemed to be waking up, questioning why the constitution has been ignored, standing up and saying it is not acceptable that torture is being done in their name. This is a far cry from 2003, 2004, 2005 when the legislators, the press, the intellectuals, everyone was towing the line (I know it wasn't everyone, Bill Maher was standing tall). I, like many around the world, are hoping and expecting that the new administration will continue this trend, but we are under no illusion, USA is still the imperial force on this planet, and they will continue to push the rest of us around. It is all a question of scale. -
would you let me jump a smaller chute at your dz?
Andrewwhyte replied to MADPROPS's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There is a difference between what I would advise you to do and what I will let you do. If you show up here with a 150 we will let you jump it, but I advise you to keep the 170 for another season. -
This is the true issue of the day. If those who have violated the constitution and international law as agreed to by the US congress via various treaties are prosecuted, the damage to US society in the short term will be enormous. The economy will suffer, and the 'payback' mentality will infect not only the political spectrum, but the very fabric of US society. However 100 years from now the children will be taught, that it is not just in defeated nations like Germany and Serbia, not just in small countries like Rwanda and Croatia, but wherever the war criminals may be, they will be hunted down and brought to justice. The question is are you willing to see your business go bankrupt? Are you willing to be unemployed for an extra 18 months? Are you willing to lose your house? I stated in another thread that environmental health and democracy are normal goods; ones that people want more in good times than in bad. Is justice also a normal good. Early indications are that Obama thinks so, but Pelosi does not.

Why does a shit economy support such a strong dollar?
Andrewwhyte replied to rhys's topic in Speakers Corner
Where does Aussies wealth come from? As far as I can tell their main exports are commodities, which are falling like a stone. Canada is in a similar position. We have run 13 consecutive federal surpluses, none of our banks are in trouble, we do not have a sub-prime mortgage issue. Our dollar has gone from US$1.10 to $0.79 in the last 14 months. C'est la vie. -
As long as we don't go too far in the other direction. Like treating terrorists like speeders and giving them a friggin ticket..... Agreed. But we must be true to our values.
-
What it really shows is that environmental health is a normal good; ones apatite for it is positively correlated with wealth. The Russians show the same feelings for democracy.

I couldn't agree more. Your friends around the world have been very worried about you.The good news is you folks turned away from that path last election.

As was Clinton, Bush the elder, Reagan, Ford, Truman and Hoover. So more than one third of the 20th century had a president drawn from the one eighth of humanity who is in our right minds. -Bill "the spaceman" Lee

If you are stoned SLAM ON YOUR BRAKES!

indyz's gear rental rates may be on the low side. When I crosstrained to sigma at Perris a couple of years ago I paid $50.00/jump for gear. For a guy with your experience and an active sigma rating you should have to make one or two jumps at most to get your USPA rating.

Gotta be one guy out of eight is going to turn on the AC and blow the breaker.

Andrewwhyte replied to rhys's topic in Speakers Corner
Pretty much yes. Seriously the problem is everyone else's economy is shit as well so people go for the safety of the big island.
