  1. In Canada Paki is very derogative, I get the feeling that it is less so in UK. Is it something you merely endure when it happens, or do you think of it a being denuded of pejorative content through use like 'Mick' or 'Jordy?'
  2. Wow, I just saw a couple of Jays in a tree out front. I haven't seen an eastern Jay in close to ten years, and never in Alberta. When I lived in New Brunswick they were all over the place, but they all died off about 15-20 years ago.
  3. I was referring to USC's "mail it in season" when Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush returned to win once again. The only problem is Texas didn't hear the news.
  4. It is the same argument as for terrorists; The pirate towns are mostly full of poor people who are just trying to survive. They are not pirates, they just go where the jobs are.
  5. "The first rule of Italian driving; Whatsa behind you, don'ta matter."
  6. You are thinking way too short term. The GW industry keeps talking about the long term consequences. If Canada's north, Siberia and Alaska warmed up we can grow a hell of a lot of food. Maybe rice until we drain it, but that worked out well for the Asians. Whether it will be swamped by the loss of land currently under cultivation is uncertain, but they are awfully large chunks of land. The short term (say, next thousand years or so) human costs will be high, but really, if the long term result was to increase the carrying capacity of our planet, wouldn't that be a good thing?
  7. Actually all I am realizing is that you are sounding more and more like a holier than though, moral majority asshole every post. The premise in your op is that if someone is an alcoholic they will drink on the job and therefore should be excluded from virtually all jobs of consequence. The next step is to slowly redefine what an alcoholic is until prohibition is the only solution. The "war on drugs" nazis have already tobogganed down that slope. This is the same argument that has football players being suspended for smoking dope during the off season and skydivers testing for pot at the world championships.
  8. How much currently non-arable land is there in Alaska? That total US yield will go down is not a given.
  9. This is a pile of shit. The word Paki is not to be used in polite company, but a Sandhurst cadet on a training mission is hardly that. The price of being on the civil list I suppose.
  10. But moving map display GPS units are OK. I am all for banning hand sets. It truly amazes me how often I navigate around a driver who is clearly not paying attention and notice that they are on the phone. I realize the research shows that the accident rate goes up with hands free sets, but it also goes up if you are having a conversation with someone present in the car. 90%+ of my driving is with me alone in the car. I am constantly amazed at how much poorer a driver I am when there is someone else in the car.
  11. Boy I would be some pissed off if I found out I was paying good money to listen to musicians who were drinking or taking drugs.
  12. The first time you are really pissed at them the love completely overlays the situation. You are still pissed, but you are constantly aware that the situation is ephemeral, but the relationship is not.
  13. It seems to me there might be a market for electronic "once only" pads that spooks used to use during the cold war.
  14. I have flown a reserve packed by an alcoholic, another by a drug addict. Three times I have flown reserves packed by a reformed alcoholic. The alcoholic was sober and the chronic wasn't stoned (I don't think). The number of times I have flown in aircraft flown by a hungover pilot is of way more concern.
  15. Good movie, not great. 7.5/10
  16. A 4l milk jug full of pebbles works fine. Comes with a handle too.
  17. I really think it depends where you are. I jumped for years close to Vancouver where gays tend to be more accepted than other parts of the country. We had a gay pilot, as well as at least one gay jumper that I know of. I am sure some people cared about that, but most of us didn't. Now I live in Alberta which is, um, a little more conservative. No, an openly gay man would not be accepted here. The gay jokes around here are outright vicious. I doubt our competitor down the road would be any more accommodating. You can expect to be accepted the same way you are accepted throughout the rest of society. Relatively few people will refuse to jump with you or be openly hostile, but a larger percentage will decline to invite you for dinner.
  18. What I don't get is the whole concept of cheerleading for organized crime. Honest law abiding (in some cases law enforcing) men and women buying into a sub-culture that is founded on murder and exploitation. Sorry folks, biker culture is not about wild and crazy guys just having fun with the odd guy going a bit too far. Biker culture is dominated by the most powerful organized crime network in North America.
  19. AND, have you noticed global warming seems to be taking a break this year. Coincidence? I think not.
  20. It most specifically does not say that the rig must not be packed until the battery pack is replaced.
