    This is the dumbest fucking thread I have seen in a while. Virtually ALL leader to leader conversations and correspondence are secret. The idea that the presidents of the US and Russia cannot correspond without a full NATO summit is moronic at best. When Obama was in Ottawa last month the visit started with a 40 minute discussion with the PM and no-one else in the room, IN SECRET DISCUSSIONS POSSIBLY ON SUBJECTS RANGING FROM EXPANDING FREE TRADE TO THE IRANIAN AN GASA CRISES (and on their children and the pressures of office according to Harper).

    More importantly nothing he has done or could do can possible have any noticeable effect for at least another six months or a year. The markets are freaking about the latest GNP numbers, for the quarter that ended before he was inaugurated.

    Close, but not quite. My area of study is closely related, but requires far more mathematics. (Of course, an economist without a strong mathematics background is nothing but a politician.) ,.. and a mathematician who does not fully understand the assumptions and corresponding limitations to both strength and robustness of economic models will often come to strong conclusions that are not justified by strength of the premises.

    You should head over for a long weekend.. check out the DZ's at the north end of Seattle...Hell maybe hook up with Doc and Ladydvr and roll across the border to the Canadian DZ for a jump or two. She doesn't need a passport to go to Canada; just to get back.

    The "magic wand" metaphor reminds me of another one invoked by Friedman and the Chicago Boys: the "invisible hand" as part of neo-liberal economics. /Marg Actually the invisible hand was coined by Adam Smith in "The Wealth of Nations."

    I think you are absolutely correct, from your point of view. He is on a mission to change America. If he succeeds the US will look a lot more like western European countries than it used to. Only a fool would expect him to have stronger majorities in after the mid-terms so he is in a hurry. One of the lessons to be learned from the right wing leaders of the 80s and 90s around the world's democracies is that the go slow approach just gives your opponents recovery time and ammunition.

    Not really. Their dogma just happens to allow it by fluke. When whatever dark age leader thought up the "ensoulation" thing they were not being particularly reactionary or liberal. They were just thinking out loud.

    Ever been on a train in Mexico? I had a first class seat (looked just like a third class one on a Canadian train). Paid WAY more than the people on the lower class ones with the wooden benches. I am sure many people thought I was crazy spending that kind on money for a bit more room on a train arriving at the same time as their car. Besides almost all business class passengers are deducting the travel expenses. Your taxes are helping purchase their $700.00 beverage.

    This is true. Unfortunately many people who were responsible are also paying the price. Having a 15% downpayment doesn't help if the market falls 26% in one year and you get laid off. I would like to see what percentage of those in default refinanced their mortgage for larger amounts for purposes other than home improvement vs people who just bought on the "low interest for the first year" plan and couldn't keep up.
