  1. Wow! You mean you've never taken a tandem who didn't speak english or had a translator? I am stunned! I would guess that close to twenty percent of my tandem passengers I could not communicate with them well enough for me to legitimately call them a 'student.' My point is that every Tandem passenger is not a student. Different DZs treat their tandems different ways, but I think if I was to insist that the only way I would accept a tandem is as a bonafide candidate for an 'A' license at our DZ, I would have 200-300 less tandems on language skills alone.
  2. As has been said before, it is hard to say without knowing your experience level. However if you want more performance then probably the canopy type rather than size would likely be your next transition. My advice is to stay at your current wing loading while moving to a nine cell rectangular or slightly elliptical (Sabre, Sabre II, Saphire, Saphire II, Hornet or Pilot 210). If you get a container built for that you can use it for many hundreds of jumps; if you decide to go to a 190 in a couple of hundred jumps it will still fit. HINT: For a big guy like you you should really be focused on getting a harness that has a yoke that you find comfortable; over the next few years that will probably be the more critical choice. Have fun.
  3. That's because everyone involved has come to the conclusion that blaming the sectarian forces for the extremist actions is uncalled for, tongue in cheek comments by myself, Skyrad, and Jakee aside.
  4. Was it? Maybe for France and Belgium it was but not for UK and the US. European monarchs/dictators had been attacking and conquering each other for 1000 years. This was precisely why the sentiment in the US was to stay out of it (This doesn't mean the UK was wrong to be there). The crazy thing about the battle of the Somme is that it wasn't even the main show; it was intended to relieve the pressure from the battle of Verdun which the French were being hammered. Think about that for one minute-- One of the bloodiest battles in human history (~300,000 dead) was set up to relieve the pressure from another colossal battle(~250,000 dead).
  5. I agree. I think the VP slot would be a trap for Obama unless he was sure they were going to lose. If he doesn't get the nod he can go back to the Senate with either four or eight years to 'season' himself. He will be the starting line favorite for the next race. BTW what was the legislative legacy of JFK prior to 1960?
  6. And if that just makes 'em angrier, then we nuke the Vatican? NO! Then we start burning Jesuits at the stake. If that doesn't make them civilized then we nuke the Vatican.
  7. Seems a bit over the top don't you think? Try burning down a convent in 'derry as a more measured response to start.
  8. I would never accept a student for training who doesn't speak english; would you accept a tandem student who doesn't speak a language you are fluent in?
  9. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a King Air prett pricy to operate given the two hungy hungry engines and retractible gear? Yes but at roughly half the purchase price you can afford quite a bit of variable cost on the capital cost savings. This becomes particularly true for operations in the 200-400 hr/yr range. For larger operations that use an Otter, I think your analysis may be right for those that just barely use an Otter, but if the otter is busy I don't see how less aircraft will help unless otter costs do accelerate. Hopefully the new otter production will put downward pressure on old Otter pricing.
  10. Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics; even if you win you're still retarded.
  11. The DZ in Pitt Meadows drastically reduces the cool down on its King air (PT6-20s) by cycling the engine without fuel using an external power source.
  12. This goes exactly to the heart of the problem; what if there isn't anyone in their class that year? The desire to teach our young that the world in their immediate vicinity contains all the belief structures that are valid is the devil's plan (if he does exist) indeed. It may serve the young person well if the big trip to the state capital will be the big excursion in his/her life, but how will it serve him/her in ten years as a member of the USMC enforcing a NATO peace plan between the Hindu Tamils and the Buddist Sinalise in Shri Lanka when as an nco he/she has to deal with the cultural demands of some animist belief tribe that has no friends on either side but is in the way of both, and there is no time to wait for decisions from above? I believe it leads to a tiered value system with respect to people.
  13. [reply And also I think you'll find that there are some religious types on here that are far more vitriolic than any of our atheists when it comes to talking about religions other than Christianity. Especially one closely related religion. Ding! Ding! Ding!
  14. When learning to pack using riggerrob's tools I had the advantage that they all had bungies trailing from them so there was no way I could forget them on the canopy no matter where they were clamped.
  15. You see how stupid out British friends are? If they had just bombed all the Catholic churches and convents in Ulster back in the early seventies the troubles would be a distant memory. Silly bulldog.
  16. I believe the rule for saves is the go ahead run must be due on deck. If you pitch the ninth and you are ahead by three, you get the save because the fourth batter is due on deck; If you come in with one out you only get the save if the lead is two or less unless there is a runner on because then the go ahead guy is due on deck.
  17. Good on him. Tom Glavine is a class act.
  18. Officials in the Obama camp did admit that the reports were true, but insisted that the voting public will not base their decisions on a DNA test:"The presence of the M5W bonded pair in Mr. Obama's sample does not mean he will become a paranoid schitzophrenic. It merely means he has a slightly higher suceptibility to the disease than the rest of us." Actually the M5W marker indicates a 6.2% chance of developing the affliction during middle age. Meanwhile the Clinton camp vehemently denied leaking the DNA information,...
  19. Because that opens the door to intolerance of those who fall below the threshold, such as Witchcraft, Rastafari, Santaria or Voodoo. BTW Mormonism would hardly be considered one of the worlds more widely accepted faiths and protestantism only fits if you lump disparate groups like episcopalians and Southern Baptists together. If you really want the children introduced to Shiva, the Goddess of Pain, that's your business, but personally I think it would be more appropriate at the college level.
  20. Almost reminded me of that Monty Python movie, I think the one called "Life of Brian" with that house full of 20+ kids and the mom's at the kitchen sink and a baby just plops out of her onto the floor! Lol yup it's Life of Brian... But dude, seriously, she's that woman!!! She's like a one woman mission to over populate the world! How the heck do they even begin to afford a family that large? Nope. It was "The Meaning of Life."
  21. Like changing a flight due to weather? That's a mischaracterization. It was because he wanted to board an airplane without having a ticket. That makes him a "suspect". We have to be careful with those folks... I had a boarding pass with my name on it, matching my passport; it was a paperless ticket.
  22. A jack-screw broke on the tail of an MD-80 a couple of years ago (Alaska Airlines I think). It was not out of inspection, it just broke anyway. Just because an aircraft part broke doesn't automatically mean there was a maintenance deficiency.
  23. Exit order and horizontal separation are determined according to freefall activities not landing plans. If you and I are doing a two-way and I plan on doing a 270, that doesn't mean you are as well. Should the tandems go first because the cameraflyer wants to swoop?
  24. I just assumed that that was true. I guess that's why I am not a scientist.
