New rules for job hunting (from a cranky job seeker)
Andrewwhyte replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
I think using conectorized on your resume is ok as long as you remember that truthiness is vital. -
Are you really suggesting the US open up a third war?

I drove a new Chevy 3/4 ton diesel with the Allison 6-speed automatic from Calgary to Columbus Miss. last year. That thing kicked ass like I have never seen in a truck before. The fuel efficiency was surprising as well. If I was getting a Chevy I would spring for the better seat; standard issue was a bit disappointing on a long ride.

Not exactly a gold star standard for comparison. When the value added national sales tax came in in Canada there were exemptions for groceries, not snacks, and not gasoline. The existing provincial retail taxes had a completely different list of exemptions (children's clothes, school supplies etc.) the result is a lot of work for the private sector, endless lobbying from everyone else who wants an exemption, and two audits a year (one from each level of gov). BTW the government that brought in the GST was reduced to 2 (count 'em) seats from 180ish in the next election. I suspect that lesson has not been missed by the members of the US congress.

What about books? You can't tax reading! And children's clothes, are you going to unfairly penalize poor kids so they don't have warm boots in the winter? If you don't tax groceries what about snacks? Where is the line? is 4oz of juice grocery or snack? 5oz? 4.9? The only way to bring in a sales tax is to apply it to absolutely everything; all goods, all services are taxed the same. That way there is no unintended economic distortions. If some group needs to be subsidized (poor, elderly, children, etc) then it needs to be done in a completely different program. The main effect of exemptions is to employ civil servants keeping track of what fits into what category. Each retailer must spend time and money keeping it straight as well. It is grossly inefficient.

Nothing. The Colombians are not starting a campaign of encroaching on their neighbours; they had a significant "target of opportunity" and they took it. Ecuador is rightly pissed, but they aren't going to do anything about it. Chavez is making what hay he can, but will not attack. The US should send out a low key statement that they would always defend their friends with force if necessary, but that is all. If Chavez really does attack Colombia they could send a few bombs down on his military, but the most likely result will be the ranting of the ranter.

I have NEVER claimed to invent anything of the sort. Quit squirming! You have been designated the inventor and no amount of denial will get you out of it. Furthermore all problems with the form that arise will be assigned to you; you will be pilloried wherever you go for that. YOU ARE the Olaf of atmonauti.

I try and drink a bit of everything- Cab, Merlot, Shiraz, Zin, Pinot Noir, everything.

You overstate your case. Raising taxes if it is the most efficient and fair path to the public goals is not an abuse of public trust at all; it is merely not the solution you favour. I would suggest that your favoured solution is heavily biased in philosophical bent rather than hare economic analysis.

Actually the Harbour Air Twotter in the Vancouver pic is owned by Ken Borak Air, the owner of the other fleet of Otters in The Maldives. Their other claim to fame is they were the ones who flew to the south pole in winter to rescue that doctor a few years ago.

Loss of wind causes Texas power grid emergency

I am pretty sure this would be akin to the danger of raising the ocean's temperature by pissing into it. -
Harry and his brother may or may not have wanted to join the military. The point is that it was expected of them; just like their father; just like their uncle.

Illegal Immigration Under President Eisenhower
Andrewwhyte replied to rickjump1's topic in Speakers Corner
In Canada we don't have a large stock of illegals to do farm labour. We do have guest workers and legal immigrants doing it. They get paid wages I don't want to work for, but they are subject to minimum wage laws as well as health and safety regs. American produce is a lot cheaper than Canadian produce and free trade did push a lot of farmers out of business. Most consumers prefer to buy Canadian produce, but their preference is not unlimited; if the apples are cheaper from Washington State then people buy the apples from Washington. -

Because it is important to let those who believe they can dictate what the rest of us can say or think know that they cannot. -
Kindergarten kid suspended from school for...
Andrewwhyte replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
So what happens if a Mohawk kid enrolls at the school (they do come from roughly that part of the world). Isn't that kind of like banning afros. If a kid had hasidic curls, would that be a distraction? What about dreads? I think kindergarten is exactly the wrong place to be enforcing normal stereotypes upon children. Most US soldiers I have ever seen would be charged if they were in the British army for having "aggressively short hair." It's just stupid. -
Illegal Immigration Under President Eisenhower
Andrewwhyte replied to rickjump1's topic in Speakers Corner
Depends on the wage offered. This is an old fight; immigrants, legal or not, put downward pressure on wages. During the fifties the overall skill level of the labour force was lower so it was more visible, but the basic supply/demand function has not changed; capitalists want more labour supply, labour wants less. -
"I'm so exited, I must say."

Illegal Immigration Under President Eisenhower
Andrewwhyte replied to rickjump1's topic in Speakers Corner
If you read the article there were vested interests back then who suffered from such a round up (as championed by LBJ) and those who would gain (legal unskilled labour). The situation is similar today; the shortage of work for unskilled labour is much less acute but the niche filled by illegals travels much higher up the skills ladder. The truth is that alleviating the UDW problem amounts to short term pain for long term gain. There is no chance that lawmakers will engage in that kind of policy in an election year or, more importantly, as they are trying to avoid a recession. Some people may say that freeing up those jobs on the bottom will help the economy, and that may be true a little further in the cycle if the recession really hits employment. Right now however the problem is on the capital side of the economy, that's the side that will suffer from the short term effects of a large scale removal. -
I think Cabo is in the low 40s that tie of year. A bit of a sea breeze helps, but not much.

Might want to check on that. I have jumped in Perris and have never belonged to USPA. I know twenty people who were there last week; none of them have USPA. Military? If so, you're right...Perris doesn't inforce USPA membership for them since they come with their own comprehensive plan and all. ltdiver No, not military. I showed my CSPA card and license and went skydiving. It might be a country by country thing based upon whether they think the insurance will actually stand up. There was a very brief period about ten tears ago when it looked like USPA was going to go the BPA route and demand USPA from everyone, but it only lasted a few months. I have jumped at about ten DZs in US in six states and have never been asked for USPA. If Perris were to insist I would go to Eloy or Lodi

It might spur the robotics industry on. Now we're talking real proletarian dystopia.
