  1. Maybe it's a John Wayne feeling when you aren't allowed to deal with firearms on a normal level, it's is not for me. A firearms is a tool, nothing more. For a time, I handled firearms more days than not, and it was not a John Wayne feeling, it was a feeling of responsibility. I wonder if the removal of firearms from everyday use and their attributed mystical powers are related.... Maybe if guns were treated more like tools and less like magical items, people would be more likely to act responsibly around them and less like a John Wayne character. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  3. There's just two things you have to do to not get your ass beat. (1) When a cop says "stop, lie down," do it. (2) Make no sudden hand movements That's it. Avoid those two things, and you won't get a beat down. Oh yeah, and don't go around charging at and/or punching cops witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  5. Damn, that's a new one even for me, and I thought I'd herad them all (being from NJ and DC and all). Which idiot/group of idiots is spewing that trash? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  6. Come on Matt, you're in the DC area, you ought to know by now that no one is ever responsible for their own actions. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  7. But Christel, we've already established the untrustworthy people will obtain guns through the black market, so the gun control laws won't stop crime. Do you think everyone who wants to carry a gun will go on a shooting rampage because of the price of chicken? I suppose it comes down to how much faith you have in mankind. I trust people more than I trust government, that's all. 8. Right now I can't find the real study either. It's cited as >Gary Kleck and Mark Gertz. Fall 1995. “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense With a Gun,” Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology< witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  9. We both agree gun control laws cannot control the black maket in guns, so the laws have no effect on crime. The disagreement is that you see a positive in the fact that it is difficult for law abiding citizens to obtain a firearm, where I do not. Just have to agree to disagree there. So there it is everyone, even gun controllers know gun control laws only affect the law abiding. Their only positive effect is making it harder for regular people to own firearms. The truth comes out! witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  10. Source? 1993 Study by Gary Kleck http://www.criminology.fsu.edu/ccjfaculty/kleck.htm It was in the Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology. He wrote Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America, which won the 1993 Michael J. Hindelang Award of the American Society of Criminology. This award is presented for the book of the previous several years which "made the most outstanding contribution to criminology." edit: I was mistaken, the DGU study is cited as witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  11. Or they could've actually mentioned that the AWB doesn't ban rifles, and has nothing to do with full auto, and only affects cosmetic features. Let's see how many people support the ban when they find out it's only about flash suppressors, pistol grips, and bayonet lugs. Just read the CNN article. It makes people think AK-47s and UZIs will be available to anyone if the ban sunsets. NEWSFLASH to the news people: Full Auto is heavily regulated and not easily available. Full Auto IS NOT COVERED BY THE AWB. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  12. OK, maybe I didn't make myself clear. My fault. There is no way to gauge how many potential crimes were prevented by guns. The 2.5 million number I bring up is actual crimes that were stopped by citizens with firearms. Most of the time this means drawing a firearm and pointing it at a perpetrator. Sometimes it includes shots fired and rarely someone is hit. This is not some la-la land "could've happened if only" scenario. These are real crimes that were stopped because citizens were armed. So this is not something that didn't happen. This is 2.5 million people who stopped crimes that were happening because they had a firearm. So it's not that something didn't happen, it's that two somethings happened. To make your analogy accurate, we would first have to have a high rate of natural gas homes going up, then someone introduces a new tool that prevents all these explosions, and the news doesn't cover it. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  14. That's why I get half my news right here in the Corner. People come in and post stuff, sometimes with opinions, sometimes without, but either way everybody who cares has to go check it out for themselves. And since you're out there looking already, it's easy to just keep looking and check out what different sources are saying. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  15. Thread about the Assault Weapons Ban with a great deal of information. maybe a greenie could pull it out of TB and put it here in the Corner? . witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  16. That's nice, I knew those extremists were marching today. You didn't answer my question. If the gun control laws in Germany don't stop criminals from getting guns, what are they accomplishing? For information on the "Assault Weapons Ban," I'll direct everyone to the thread I started specifically to discuss it. Thread HERE I won't repost the entire thing, but basically the AWB banned cosmetic features on semi-automatic rifles, and some features on handguns and shotguns. Those features were things like pistol grips, bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, etc. (In my opinion is is a pointless law that had zero effect on crime but looked good as a show piece for "getting tough on crime") The AWB had no effect on how fast a gun could fire, what it could fire, or how deadly it could be. Also, as an update, the Assault Weapons Ban had basically one chance at getting passed before it 'sunsets' in 126 days, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms. The AWB was supposed to be an amendment, but the entire bill was scrapped to prevent the AWB from being repeated. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  17. Oh, I would never say bigger papers don't have a place. They are useful. You just have to read them right. Example: when I lived in DC, I had a lot more time to read the paper and access to more papers. Usually I picked up the Washington Post. However, I never picked up the Post without also grabbing the Washington Times. Why? Well, it came from an experience in college. I was sitting there reading both papers (they were free, I hadn't bought either). I read in the Post about police brutality on demonstrators in Detroit. A few minutes later, I read how police were forced to use tear gas and shields to break up riots that had burned one car, blown up another, attempted arson to an apartment building, and resulted in several assaults. It took me a few minutes to realize I was reading about the same incident. Ever since then, I have read both papers at the same time, and you know what? Probably 90% of the articles in one were matched in the other. It completely amazes me how the Post had opinions in the articles while the Times seemed to report more and editorialize less. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  18. And here I thought he had something new to say, or was going to make a real statement. Sorry quade, I can't get excited about a big city paper editor bashing Fox and O'Reilly. Wow, he had another big city paper editor patting him on the back in the article. Who's surprised? I bet "all the right people" are at his cocktail parties, and as long as everyone there agrees on something, well then that's all there is to say about that. I'm not claiming some vast left wing conspiracy, I'm just saying most of the people we call journalists are liberal. They don't actively try to leave things out, but when something doesn't fit their worldview, do you think we hear it? When's the last time you heard that 2.5 milion crimes are prevented evry year by citizens with firearms? Or the last good thing you heard about the economy (which is, yet again, showing positive indicators)? I'll take a reporter over a journalist any day of the week. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

  20. OK, maybe I'm not understanding your point of view. If we both agree that gun control laws in Germany are not preventing criminals from getting guns, what are they accomplishing? How are they working? What other goals are they reaching? What other positive effect are those gun control laws having? (I used repeated questions not to be mean in any way shape or form. I just wanted to make sure the question I'm asking gets across. Overall, what good are they doing if they don't stop criminals from getting guns?) I'm not trying to convince you of anything, I just want to better understand what you are saying. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  21. Gun laws that punish bad acts work. That's it. Why? Criminals will commit crimes no matter what, so all we can do is punish them to the best of our ability and not waste time screwing with people who have done nothing wrong. Gun laws that punish everyone do not work. Maybe that's not true. That depends on your definition of "work." If your aim is reducing crime, they don't work. If your aim is slowly encroaching on individual liberties towards a "final solution," then yes, they work just fine. No, they are not cleverly disguised. They are fairly blatant. Remember, every gun registration has led to gun confiscation, even here in the US. I have a long memory. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), on CBS` "60 Minutes" "Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in." Those are the only words gun owners need to remember. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  22. I believe I read in one of the linked articles that the driver and the passenger/shooter both have prior convictions and felony records. The passenger was forbidden by law from owning that gun, twice! Once because he is a felon, once because Chicago outlaws handguns. I'm not all that sympathetic to either side here. Every single one of them was at fault in a number of ways. I wonder if the deceased would come out sparkling clean if they dug into his past the way they did for the driver and shooter... You are however correct, in that this will be one more story that the anti-gun groups misrepresent to the American public in an attempt to further their goals. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  23. Newsflash bill: NRA supported NICS. The NRA has always said that waiting periods (the original brady law requirement) wouldn't work, and they didn't. The NRA is ok with NICS for FFL dealers. The NRA supports swift and severe punishment for people selling guns on the black market. Hey, would you look at that, they enforced the law already on the books, and we caught a criminal. Unfortunately, this hasn't always been the case. I point you to the CLinton claim that 100,000 felons were prevented from buying guns by NICS. If that is true, why weren't there 100,000 arrests and 100,000 convictions? Laws only work when they are enforced. Remember, NRA supports prosecuting criminals who use guns to the full extent of the law. Look into Project Exile. Proven successful. Enforce laws against bad acts with guns- don't blame all guns and all gun owners. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  24. Requirements are different is most states. Some, like NY and CA make it almost impossible for regular citizens to acquire a permit. Only politicians and celebs can carry concealed legally there. Other places are RTC states, which means if a citizen meets written, objective standards, they must be issued a permit. Different RTC states have different standards. Some are very high, others are very low. Different ages, different criminal history standards, different costs, different training requirements, etc etc. The simple answer is that if it is a "may-issue" state, also known as discretionary issue, it all depends on the issuing agency. Some discretionary are very good about it and issue to almost anyone. Others, like NY, issue nearly zero permits. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
  25. A person with a gun can use any amount of force to save another person that the person being attacked may reasonably use. That means if some gorilla of a man is attacking someone, and that person would be justified in using deadly force to protect himself, then I would be justified in using deadly force to protect them. The crux of this case is whether or not the driver initiated violence. (striking the SUV doesn't count, that's property). If the driver started the violence, then he would not be justified in using deadly force, so neither was his passenger. If the ball fan with the bat started the fight, then the driver would be justified (most likely) in using deadly force, and that means the passenger (most likely) was justified in using deadly force to protect him. ps - I can testify to it, those souvenir bats can do some real damage. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
