  1. Hi John, For almost all of my life I have been opposed to capital punishment. A couple of lifetimes ago, when I was in Basic Training, SSGT Don A. Willocks once told us that he thought a sentence of life in prison was worse that being executed. I had to give that some thought. Some time ago, we had a fairly consistent poster on here, Andy9o8 who was opposed to capital punishment with an exemption that if you killed or had someone killed, while you were incarcerated, you could be put to death. I had to give that some thought also. I decided to agree with Andy9o8. * Jerry Baumchen * I wish he were still posting here, as he was an attorney & always gave us well thought out input. As do a few others on here. PS) IMO The Innocence Project has provided more than sufficient evidence to eliminate this barbaric practice. 2. Hi Peter, A quite well thought letter, I could suggest a few editorial changes, but you've 'hit the nail on the head.' About 4 yrs ago I was contacted by a rigger who had sent his square reserve parachute back to the mfr [ who shall remain nameless as I believe that there is more than one mfr who has boxes to be checked on their canopies ] to have a line check determination completed. He had inspected the line lengths & thought that they might be out of spec. I do not know exactly how the mfr responded, i.e., phone call, letter, e-mail, etc. As I recall, this mfr informed him that a sufficient number of the various check boxes had been filled in and that they would not re-certify it; I may be wrong on the exact wording as it has been some time ago & I may have been communicating with the rigger/owner by phone or by e-mail. He asked me if I could help out, as he only wanted a line check completed, nothing more. I gave him some thoughts to include into a letter to the mfr [ I told him to put it only into written form & not phone call or e-mail ]. I also told him to include in the letter to the mfr a demand that they send the canopy back to him & that they take no further action regarding the canopy as it was his property. A few weeks later the canopy was returned to the rigger/owner in the same condition as he had sent it to them. They did not provide any info regarding line lengths. Jerry Baumchen
  3. Hi 13, A couple of months ago, I had to get a new version of MS Office. The subscription route was one option; however, simply buying it was another option. I found a retailer on-line & bought it for about $120. Jerry Baumchen
  4. Hi Bill, Jettison Trump, eh? IMO in the long run, this is what the GOP should do. Will they; I doubt it. Just read this: “Donald Trump would rather Joe Biden be president for a thousand years than Ron DeSantis be president for five minutes.” ‘A Crazy Old Man Fighting With Himself’: Can Trump Do to DeSantis What He Did to Bush? - POLITICO I think that will apply to any GOP contender for the nomination. As I continue to say: They eat their own. I'll consider it a good day as long as they sit at the dining table. Jerry Baumchen
  5. Hi Ken, And, do not forget the 35 clowns getting out a small car. We all appreciate humor. Jerry Baumchen
  6. Hi X-1, Somewhat. But, I do remember her emails. Is that enough? Jerry Baumchen PS) Does anyone remember how much federal money Trey Gowdy spent investigating Hillary? Besides, Hunter can just say, 'I don't remember.'
  7. Hi Robert, Actually, IMO all of them are terribly entertaining. And, that is the sad part. Jerry Baumchen
  8. Hi Robert, I don't think Lindell is a lawyer; but, this one is: Sydney Powell. I think that Rudy & her, would fit right in with Kari Lake. Jerry Baumchen
  9. Hi folks, Sort of looks like another politician is trying to be 'Forgotten:' Kari Lake . . . raising concerns about the election process Kari Lake declines to concede, says she’s assembling legal team | The Hill It worked so well for Der Leader, why not give it a go? Jerry Baumchen PS) Re: assembling legal team. Well, Trump has some unpaid lawyers she might get to work for her. NOT!!!!!! All of the winning; yea, sure.
  10. Hi Rich, It is called 'politics as usual.' Jerry Baumchen
  11. Hi Wendy, Hang in there. I was at the Berlin Wall in the summer of '63. I knew it would come down one day, I did not think that it would come down in my lifetime. The glass IS half full. Jerry Baumchen
  12. Hi Keith, You write that as if it were a statement of fact. It is your opinion, nothing more. Jerry Baumchen PS) And, I disagree with you. I have pointed more than one D in the Another Scumbag thread.
  13. Hi John, Yup. That is a legal lesson for today's class. Jerry Baumchen
  14. Hi folks, And, another Trumper bites the dust: Katie Hobbs defeats Trump ally Kari Lake in Arizona governor’s race | The Hill Trump: The Kiss of Death Jerry Baumchen PS) And, one more: Facing defeat, Joe Kent campaign looks to ‘cure’ challenged ballots - OPB
  15. Hi Robert, I'm thinking this might be a good thing; in the short run. Jerry Baumchen
  16. Hi Robert, It is all of that winning. Or, is it whining; it's tough trying to keep up. Jerry Baumchen
  17. Hi Rich, I think that is his game plan. IMO it will depend on the amount of control Trump has over the GOP once the dust settles on these mid-terms results. If Trump continues to have 'substantial' influence, then Ryan has no chance of getting the GOP nomination; at least not in 2024. Ryan is only 52, young for POTUS by today's standards; he can wait until 2028. Jerry Baumchen
  18. Hi John, And, a local nutjob was also endorsed by Trump: Democrat Gluesenkamp Perez flips Washington’s 3rd District - oregonlive.com Trump was able to get rid of a fairly moderate GOP CongressCritter only to have it backfire on him. Jerry Baumchen
  19. Hi Ken, This is why I think people are going for Ranked Choice Voting. I think it is an idea whose time has come. Jerry Baumchen
  20. Hi folks, Since the 2022 mid-terms are behind us [ well, a few to be decided but all votes have been cast ], we have been discussing Trump running again, Biden running again, I thought it would be better to simply start a new thread on the topic. So, here we go: Former Speaker Paul Ryan . . . said Trump is causing political problems for Republicans and dragging down the party’s candidates. Paul Ryan: Republicans are suffering from ‘Trump hangover’ | The Hill IMO this is just the beginning of Ryan's quest for the office. Jerry Baumchen
  21. Hi Ken, A few years ago, my son & I were talking about presidents. We both agreed that we would like to have Barak Obama as a neighbor on one side & Geo. W. Bush as a neighbor on the other side. It would make for some great BBQ discussions. Jerry Baumchen
  22. Hi folks, In the 1920's, a failed painter, military veteran stood up in a beer hall in Munich, Germany & started spouting off. This lead to the Third Reich and the most devastating event of the 20th century, World War II. Since I do not speak German, the little that I have heard of his speeches, I cannot grasp. However, I have read many, many times that he was a great orator & could really get a crowd worked up. In the evening of 23 Oct 1964, while driving from Portland, OR to Richland, WA to go to a parachute contest, I heard The Speech on the radio. Once it was concluded, you just wanted to stop the car, get out & salute the nearest moon, star, whatever. It was truly arousing. IMO The Speech is what lead to the Reagan Presidency. In his prior life, Reagan was a committed Democrat; he was also a former president of the Screen Actor's Guild, and a product of the Great Depression. In 1981, there was a fair amount of what Reagan stood for that I agreed with. However, IMO he was trying to change 40+ yrs of legislation within 4 yrs; simply cannot be accomplished. I've often thought of Ronald Reagan as an interesting person. He was a great speaker when he had a script; he could get an audience applauding like never before. However, the other side of him came out during his press conferences. Here, he was a subdued person with almost no authority in his voice. This link will take you to the 27 Oct 64 version of The Speech. IMO reading it fails to instill in one the power that it had, you really needed to hear it. A Time for Choosing Speech, October 27, 1964 | Ronald Reagan (reaganlibrary.gov) My reason for posting this is because of how Donald Trump has an amazing ability to get his base up & rallying for him. A lot of similarities to Reagan. Thoughts? Jerry Baumchen
  23. Hi Ken, Maybe Trump will become a modern day Harold Stassen: his name became most identified with his status as a perennial candidate. Harold Stassen - Wikipedia Some of them just cannot leave the limelight. I am not at a point where I agree with you; but, you do make a compelling argument. Jerry Baumchen
  24. Hi Bill, Re: do you feel the same about Nancy No, I do not. While she may be a hard-core Democrat, she is not two-faced & has IMO ethics that she works & lives by. I cannot say the same for McCarthy. Jerry Baumchen
