Hi folks, It looks like the knives are coming out: McConnell steps up attacks on a weakened Trump | The Hill Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, Since I started the thread on Capital Punishment, this issue is in the news today: Ban on assisted suicide not against European Convention on Human Rights, court rules | NL Times I live in Oregon & we have it as a matter of law; even if there are quite a few very stringent conditions that have to be met. Earlier this year, a long-time friend called me & told me about a guy from our high school days that shot himself. He was dying of cancer & decided to end things early. What are your thoughts on Assisted Suicide? Jerry Baumchen

Hi Sky, And, what is worse IMO is the number of people who seem to be OK with it. 'I gotta have my guns.' Jerry Baumchen

Hi Ken, Re: it is a more effective deterrent This is what I often wonder about. I am not student of murders in this country; however, I do think that many [ if not, most ] tend to be crimes of passion. IMO at that point, the killer will not function rationally. From some of what I have read over the years, a life sentence in isolation [ ala Super Max ] might just be a far worse punishment. Back a couple of lifetimes ago, when I was in Basic Training in the military, SSGT Don A. Willocks told us that he considered life in prison a worse sentence than the death penalty. * Jerry Baumchen * There are some things one never forgets. PS) Here is some info on, what I think, is the most prolific killer in Oregon history: Dayton Leroy Rogers - Wikipedia Note this at the end: On November 12, 2021, his death sentence was overturned for the fourth time. This was due in part to a new law signed by Governor Kate Brown, which limited the amount of aggravating factors required for seeking the death penalty.

Hi Rob, A little off-topic: Did CSPA purge their files for fatalities prior to then? I seem to remember a guy named Dick Harder who went in at Abbotsford DZ about 1966. It's been a few years & the old memory is not perfect. ?????????? Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, The Governor of Oregon has just commuted the death sentences of everyone [ 17 total ] on Death Row here in Oregon: Outgoing Oregon governor commutes death row sentences, orders execution chamber dismantled - OPB I am interested in how people feel about death sentences; particularly, the non- US folks on here. Thoughts????????????// Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, Looks like his days at the top are over: a nominee who will continue Trump’s policies but is not Trump DeSantis tops Trump by 23 points among Republicans in new poll | The Hill Republicans fear Trump civil war could cost them in 2024 | The Hill Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, And this one: JOE KITTINGER'S LEAP FROM THE EDGE OF SPACE - YouTube Jerry Baumchen

Hi Joe, IMO this is the problem. I consider it a human thing. Nobody cares about much of what happens to the other guy, until it happens to them. * Re: ripe with fraud and corruption One has to wonder if Medicare is ripe with fraud and corruption. For sure there is some; it is what it is. However, as I say: Show me one politician, of either party, who supports ending Medicare. It would be political suicide. Jerry Baumchen * Actually, not 'nobody' but an awful lot of people; particularly, those that are self-centered.

Hi Joe, That look on Trump's face says it all. He has/had no clue as to what was going on around him. Just a Babe in the Woods. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Robert, I worked on Sen. Wyden's first campaign for the Senate. I have voted for him every time that I could. I do not regret any one of those votes. Jerry Baumchen

Hi murps, IMO with today's USSC, this is the most scary thing on the horizon. And, you're very correct when you reference the dictator's handbook. I mean, who gives a damn about what the people actually want? Jerry Baumchen

Hi Robert, Yes, it is so. And, from your link, which I find really ironic: Harding . . . [ had ] a spot on the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, I would have really liked to have been there to see this: declined to shake hands with . . . McConnell’s outstretched palm. Hi folks, Now, this is interesting: Trump came in third place with 14.6 percent, nearly 2 points below [ Liz ] Cheney and nearly 10 points behind [ DeSantis] Would it not be the final irony if Liz Cheney were to get the GOP nod for POTUS? Trump trails DeSantis and Cheney in Utah poll of possible 2024 GOP contenders | The Hill Jerry Baumchen
