  1. Hi mbohu, Once you finish it, how about telling us what you think of it? Jerry Baumchen
  2. Hi Wendy, That reminds me of a story that I read back in 1963. About 1961-1962, a Brit was driving his Rolls-Royce in France when he suffered a broken axle. He called back to Rolls & told them about his predicament. The next day a fellow showed up, put on some overalls, got out his tools & a new axle. A few hours later, the Brit was back on the road again. It was all fixed and no charges to the owner. After he returned home, he wrote a letter to Rolls thanking them about their tremendous service in a foreign country. Rolls wrote back that no Rolls-Royce in any part of the world had ever experienced a broken axle. Jerry Baumchen
  3. Hi Joe, You are in the ball park. In this book, the author's say that the life-span of Earth is 12 billion years and that we have used up 4 1/2 billion of those years: The Life and Death of Planet Earth: How the New Science of Astrobiology Charts the Ultimate Fate of Our World: Ward, Peter: 9780805075120: Amazon.com: Books I found this book to be a very interesting read; it is not a dry, scientific tome. 4. Hi mbohu, One of the best posts ever on this subject. Bravo!!!! Jerry Baumchen
  5. Hi Bill, And, THAT is why I say, 'Wherever you are, just do a 360* turn & see all of the stuff that is a product of oil.' IMO it is a frightening experiment. Jerry Baumchen
  6. Hi Ken, I agree. Some of us have been talking about this for a very long time: The Limits to Growth - Club of Rome Just as a gut guess, I think we need to reduce the world population to about 1/3 of what it is today. I'm thinking that is about the number for continued sustainability. YMMV. I do think you would like this book: The Long Emergency - Wikipedia I consider it a very fascinating read. Jerry Baumchen PS) As I read all of these posts & the one Winsor posted the other day, I think we can all agree that the long-term future is not going to be pretty. PPS) I agree, escaping from this planet to somewhere else to live is a pipe-dream. It is a nice concept, but ultimately, one has to face reality.
  7. Hi John, Thanks for that; I had not heard of it. Goes along with Hitler wanting Paris to be destroyed as they retreated. Jerry Baumchen
  8. Hi lippy, 100% correct. I did say that this is a 'hint of what is to come.' That is the essence of that sentence, just as you say, 'how people reacted to the TP shortage and the levels of generosity that we may expect to be prevalent when oil comes into short supply.' Jerry Baumchen
  9. Hi Winsor, I could not agree more. This something I spend a fair amount of time thinking about; even though, it will not effect me. My grandchildren will most likely experience the effects of your scenario. For additional info, I have often suggested reading The Long Emergency: The Long Emergency - Wikipedia I do not agree completely with James Kunstler; but, I do agree with a lot of what he writes in his book. I found it to be a very interesting book. Jerry Baumchen PS) The toilet paper shortage of two yrs ago was just a hint of what is to come. PPS) And, I have often told people to just take a 360* look around you, no matter where you are at. Just see what all comes from fossil fuels; just about everything.
  10. Hi Robert, Also, let us not forget this oldie but goodie: Arbeit macht frei - Wikipedia Jerry Baumchen

  16. Hi jakee, Works for Trump; why would it not work for a woman? Jerry Baumchen
  17. Hi jakee, Well, it worked for Trump. Earlier in his life he tried to run for the Democratic nomination for POTUS. He switched parties & got elected. Eazy-peazy. Jerry Baumchen PS) I agree with you.
  18. Hi Wendy, Here in Oregon it means that in the primary, you do not get to vote for any partisan candidates. Jerry Baumchen

Jerry Baumchen
  20. Hi folks, Looks like this former student will be continuing his education; but, not in a school of study of his choosing: 24-year-old Secor was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison Former UCLA Student Christian Secor Sentenced In Capitol Riot Case : NPR I have this feeling he is going to learn some things he will really want to forget. Jerry Baumchen
  21. Hi Robert, So, you are saying that there are some sane members of the GOP? Just wondering, Jerry Baumchen PS) I think that ranked voting is the way to go. The hell with political parties.
  22. Hi Sky, Your link had this response; it gave me a chuckle: My son has lived through four chancellors, three home secretaries, two prime ministers and two monarchs. He's four months old. Jerry Baumchen
  23. Hi Wendy, Like you [ I think ], while I disagree with Pence on many issues, he seems to me to be a person who is ethical. Possibly due to his being so religious; and, I do not hold that against him. * Jerry Baumchen * Does not mean that I would ever vote for him.
  24. Hi folks, Looks like his former V-P also wants him forgotten: Pence, who is seen as laying the groundwork for a potential 2024 presidential bid Pence takes several veiled swipes at Trump while warning against ‘siren song of unprincipled populism’ | The Hill Today's GOP: They eat their own. Jerry Baumchen
  25. Hi Robert, I have to keep saying it: The mortality rate on base jumping in Russia is off the charts. Jerry Baumchen
