I have some thoughts about this. First, I think you're just absolutely wrong in lumping all doctors into any category. There are greedy doctors who I wouldn't let work on my dog. There are other greedy doctors who are the best at what they do...and when you need 'em, who cares what their motivation is. There are altruistic doctors who will go to the ends of the earth to help solve your problems. There are doctors with a lot of debt, and there are doctors who paid nothing for their educations. As far as pharmaceutical companies go....It's nice to be able to provide samples to patients who need them. I don't have a problem with drug reps buying lunch. In what business do you NOT see something similar? It's a physician's job to make the best decisions for his/her patients regardless of who buys his/her lunch. I DO have a problem with pharmaceutical companies paying for vacations and the like, though. As far as physicians going where they'll make more money. So what? What is wrong with a physician going where there's more money? Is there something wrong with an engineer going where there's more money? Or a businessman? I don't understand where folks think that doctors should work for crumbs. If you want smart, hard-working people to become physicians, then there's gonna have to be some compensation.... THEN as far as treating the problem rather than the symptoms. I just don't get this. I think we treat the problems as best as is possible. If I'm treating type one diabetes with insulin....well, the problem is failure of the pancreas. Giving insulin is the closest we can come to solving the problem. Can't make new islet cells grow. There's no "holistic" approach that comes closer to solving the problem. Accupuncture just ain't gonna touch it. When we only treat symptoms, it's because it's not feasible to do otherwise. Those souls bodies are far more useful than their kinfolk rotting in the dirt. Can't help but think about Gross Anatomy and the state of those cadavers (50 for my class) when we had completed the semester. We learned from them....per their own requests before they died. People have been dissecting human bodies for eons, but it's been behind closed doors where the public is oblivious. It must've been an anomoly. Not only did they not hold her down to take her blood against her wishes, they actually treated her with respect....like an actual human being! I recently had a friend who totalled her car on the way home from a vacation. I happened to be 10 minutes behind her on the road at the time. She refused the breath test. She was arrested and charged with DUI, refusing to submit to the breath test, and reckless driving. I bailed her out of the Franklin County Jail at 1am and drove her home. She went to court and I was called as a witness. She was found NOT guilty of the DUI and reckless driving, but guilty of the refusal to submit. Every person has to make decisions about what they're willing to invest into their own lives and futures. We don't all start out in the same place. There are some basic government supports in place, but they're not going to make anyone's way for them. Even a person who grew up in an orphanage and eventually ran away and quit school in the 8th grade has the opportunity to become whatever she wants to become in life....IF she's willing to put in the effort. Some people have that spark naturally and find a way to achieve. Some people have to dig a little deeper to muster the guts. Some sit on their hind ends for the rest of their lives complaining about what they weren't able to do because they weren't given the opportunity. There are a lot of HARD-WORKING people in the states you highlight. I'm certainly not among those who contributed to the "red" status of my home state, but some of the best people I know are waaay less educated than you and me....
