But if I am not mistaken, it is not up to the judge to decide on what charges should be brought up against an individual. That would be the prosecution's job. The judge can only rule on what is being put before him/her. right. Seems like there are bound to be other charges that could be brought against someone who makes children gorge themselves on food and then forces them to eat their vomit....and all those other things she did to them. Huh??? What both boys? Apparently there was another boy who was there too. I saw one boy shoot at my son and his friend. Both boys have been charged. Here's the flaw in your logic... If it was a white kid, everyone would know who the Daddy was. And, the Daddy would deal with it. Probably very effectively. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid with the pellet gun doesn't even know who his Daddy is. funny....around here NOBODY would know who my son's daddy is, and he's white. what's color got to do with it for you to bring it up? The only thing that color has to do with it is how people feel, think, and interact on my little street in this town. My concern about "racial issues" is that this sort of thing easily puts one in the middle of a conflict that's split along racial lines. A black kid on my street shot at two white kids. It's a small place, and I like getting along with my neighbors. I don't like the thought of being in the middle of some racially energized conflict. So I walked over and talked to the mom today. I think we understand each other well. I think as far as she goes, we're on the same page. She's not allowing the boy or his friends to come back to her house. (any kid over 10, like you say, should know what his gun will do, the gun should be taken by his parents and the parents should be informed. If it happened in my neighborhood, I take the gun from the kid and give it directly the punk's parents. As for cops, a good scare won't hurt him and might help, regardless of age. If he's over like 14, then definitely get the cops to scare him. If he's 16 or 18, he should be covered by the laws of the area and arrested and formally processed. Yep. We'll just have to see what happens there. They'll be talked to at school today by the State Police, and I'm just gonna defer to them on where it goes from there. Apparently there was another boy at the house whom I never saw. If they've not been in trouble before then I hope he just leaves it at a good talkin' to. I have such conflicting feelings about it. On one hand, I think you're right. But sometimes kids do stupid things for whatever reason. Being arrested on assault charges can seriously screw up any future you might be working towards. College? I don't know... Then I had a "friend" in medical school (a classmate) who had been an Olympic athlete. He had several incidents in his past of violence that had been swept aside because he was smart and a great athlete. At the end of my junior year he stabbed his wife to death and then jumped from the top of one of our hospital buildings, killing himself. Not that this kid is heading into that direction, but sometimes it's not a good idea to minimize violent behavior either. Where is that? We're in a little town in south Arkansas. Mitch, the other little boy's dad--the State Trooper, called me back a little bit ago. The boy who shot at them doesn't live there, and the "young woman" is a high school student who is really worried about her parents finding out about this. Her parents obviously weren't home when it happened or when Mitch went by. He found out who the boy is--also a high school student, and he plans to arrest him tomorrow on assault charges. The racial tension is pretty thick here in my little town. I try to teach my child better than that. Sometimes things happen that are hard to explain away, but I try to put those things in a better perspective in his mind. Well, about an hour ago, my boy and his friend were playing in the woods behind our house. I was out back playing frisbee with my dog when a young black man two doors down walked out into his back yard with a pellet gun and SHOT at the boys. They weren't doing anything but playing! I yelled, "Are you shooting at my boys?!" And he shot again. Of course then I walked on over and introduced myself. Told 'em who I was and that it was my son and his friend that this young man was shooting at. The young man didn't say anything, but a young woman said, "I'm sorry. It won't happen again." Of course Jay's friend is the son of one of our State Troopers. Of course I called him and told him what happened, and he'll be stopping by. This sort of thing stirs the pot. There's no way in hell somebody's gonna shoot any gun at my son without me responding in some way. While it could just as easily have been a white guy, it wasn't. When there IS this much racial tension and a black person shoots at a white kid it becomes a racial issue. I'm not dismissing your studies. I've read plenty of literature on substance abuse and addiction. I understand very well the issues that we're talking about. But like you said.....it's important to consider research that doesn't support your own biases. That's not what I've seen of what you've posted, but you've made some pretty bold statements based on the research you wanted to include. I've been working the marathon 36-hour ER shift this weekend. Because I'm not digging through journals in my free time...lol...only indicates that this discussion isn't as important to me as all the other things going on at the moment. In my thinking, it's not whether it's alive that's important, but rather whether it is capable of suffering. It requires brain development to be able to suffer. Oh my gosh, Michelle, do I know what you're talking about. I would study SOOOO hard and know how to work the problems backwards and forwards....until exam time. Then it all became like Chinese or something. It happened so many times. What I did was work more and more and more problems. Even after I knew I knew how to do them I worked more.
