Excellent!! It's nice to read a response that isn't guided by a narrow moralistic view, a one size fits all diagnostic/therapeutic viewpoint or one driven by the responder's own addiction (to substances, behaviors, or deities). So people's values are not important. Neither is personal experience or medical/psychiatric viewpoints....hmmm. A different perspective on that is this. I guess some people....I'll try not to generalize....are oblivious to how they come across to others. Getting by day to day becomes a series of very rudimentary, self-serving exercizes the purpose of which is to just get through the day. Very basic stuff. Until that person realizes that she's about to lose her ass....whatever that unacceptable point may be. But it's still all about her, the addict, and about (at this point) saving her ass. Seeing "what she looks like" is sooooo far outside the equation. All this time spent covering-up, she realizes later, didn't really work. People saw her just as she was. She, however, was convinced that she was holding it all together....right until the very end. At the end, it's survival driving her. That she might not look good hasn't even occurred to her. Right now it's just fear and realization that she's between a rock and a hard place--gonna die if something doesn't change. Realization of "what other people saw," and worse, "how her actions affected others," comes much, much later for her. So another Q here...if you use the "look in the mirror" technique...will they see the emaciated, black circles under their eyes person that we see? Probably not.... They'll see some little bit of what you see, perhaps, but I don't think they see what you see until they're well into recovery. And then it'll be bits at a time. Yes your right but most addicts are addicts because of "life on life terms". Thats where the high power shit comes in. It take you out of the role of playing god and putting that shit in something or someone else like a force, god, religion shit or just something greater than me. and for those folks there are some GREAT programs readily available. But those programs don't DO anything. They're available. There has to be a person in that seat with a real will to change course and stay the course. I guess what I'm getting at is that there's nothing that's gonna come along and *save* anybody. You've gotta sink or swim. For whatever reason....different reasons I'm sure....people become addicted to drugs. Whatever the reason, addiction obviously leads people to a very ugly place eventually. In my opinion, the only thing that's gonna help the person with the problem is him- or herself. Inner strength....wherever that comes from. If it's from God, then that's great. If it's from nowhere but inside, that's great too. It takes committment. It takes deciding not to make the same mistakes again...and making that same decision every time it needs to be made. Friends can help. Programs can help. Books can help. Psychotherapy can help. Religion can help. All kinds of things can help. But there's only ONE person who can make it happen. Why? Who knows. I am not woriied about humiliation as I doubt animals are prone to that. having had paint on my skin when painting I found that it could be uncomfortable. Imagine if you will, being covered over your entire body by paint or some other petroleum type product and walking around feeling it crack and dry, and stick. I think it's kinda silly, but I don't see how it harms the animal.
