Lemme tell ya, if a kid's -worst- problem is that they've had a lollypop taken away for the purposes of a photograph, that child has perhaps the most blessed childhood I've ever heard of. So here's the skinny. My ex and I both skydive. He's a TM and wants to take our 9 y/o son tandem. Jay weighs 70 pounds. For now I've said absolutely not, but Jay wants to know "when?" For now I say no because tandem gear was just not designed for 70 pound passengers, and since he's a child and still growing, the risks associated with breaking bones is too high. Even if those statistics are accurate (who knows?), I don't think that a drop in "membership" (whatever that is) from one year to the next clearly indicates anything about what's happening to our membership on a grander scale. The problem is that a major driving force behind evolutionary science is not just to get the facts, but to advance the idea that there is no God. I think it's pretty clear that people are financially better off here in the US than in most of Africa. My reply was to a statement about who has profited financially from slavery. You can get incensed if you want, but just because it's not pc to say so doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of black people who are doing pretty damn well for themselves in the US. Isn't that like saying that some Jews might have benefitted from the holocaust? Maybe I just don't get what you mean? Sometimes we DO benefit from bad things that happened in history. Some Jews may have benefitted from the Holocaust. What about the money grab by the profitteers of slavery? That was the REAL money grab. As awful as slavery was, I think it could be argued that many Americans whose ancestors were slaves have also profited from slavery. Without a doubt racism is a problem and black people, on the whole, are disadvantaged compared to whites. But what I don't know that we can say is that black Americans are worse off today because of slavery than they would have been had slavery not been. I don't think that racism is a consequence of slavery as much as it is about differences. Nowadays I think there's as much an issue with Mexicans as there is with black people....if not more. I'm certain that there are more than enough baseless reports, but in my years as a social worker--in the Emergency Room at AR Children's Hospital--and now as a physician, I see waaaay too many children who are horribly abused who wouldn't have been if Child Protective Services had not dismissed the previous reports that had been made. I'm sure, though, that because of the work I do and have done I'm probably more likely to see the children who aren't adequately protected by the State after repeated reports are made. But I have seen them many, many times. I don't know if there's a source that documents all the times that Child Protective Services fails to protect children, but they're there. Of the children I've seen in the ER due to overt abuse, I'd estimate that 1/3 to 1/2 have had previous reports made. Those kids are especially afraid to talk about it, because when they aren't protected (again), they're gonna be in bigger trouble when mom or dad or whomever the abuser is learns that they told.... I've seen some pretty awful cases. There's a little boy I took care of whose mom and step-father "punished" him by making him sit in a bath of various chemicals...bleach, pine sol, drano and the like....a few times a day for I don't know how long. His grandmother finally suspected that they were at it again when they wouldn't let her see him. She went in the house and took him. When she found him, he had no skin on his butt or back of his legs, and they had salt in his underwear. They had been reported for child abuse in the past, but the reports were deemed "baseless." In November I took care of a little 3 y/o girl in the ER who was literally fucked to death. Her physical exam was horrid. Her previous reports were also "baseless." There are many, many more. Those are two of the worst, though, and not the norm. I'm sure what I see is skewed, but the failures sure do make my stomach turn. My child's school reported his father once when Jay told his teacher that his dad had picked him up by his hair. It had happened. I was there and stopped the whole thing. But because there was no physical evidence--apparent marks or bruising--the report was deemed "baseless." I prevented anything else from happening by never letting his father be alone with him. But since things got bad enough for me to finally leave my ex-husband, he gets all kinds of visitation with Jay alone.
