The other thing I've learned is that I'm FAR from adequate. There are people who are lots better than me, and some people may actually die because I was their doctor. I keep trying to study, learn, improve my skills, but I'm inadequate, at this point, in comparison to drdive and some others. BUT when it's you there with that patient, you are the best chance they have. Don't blow it off. LEARN. That's the best thing you can do for the people who die when you're the one taking care of them. Learn everything you can to give the next person a slight edge if you can. I'm just not sure how I should feel about it. There's not a "should feel" to it. It's just how you feel. The worst situation like that in my short history was being called to the ER by a VERY competent ER nurse. When she said she needed me there NOW, I said, "Fuck, if YOU need ME, then it's bad." When I got there, there was an old friend. Fuck. And he was obviously screwed. ESRD. Apparently had tied one on. I had talked with him the previous day in Mad Butcher. He was recalling who graduated from Fordyce High in which years....we're talking about in my day, and I graduated in '84. He still remembered who graduated when back then. Bennie was a moonshiner. A colorful character. Someone whom I'd share an easy hour with just shootin' the shit. But at 5am, with his thick neck, after his trachea had been perforated...his thick tongue protruding from his mouth, all I could say was "God DAMMIT! I need a scalpel." Did an emergency trach on a friend. He died, but he died with an airway. And I learned something from him that morning. "How I felt" (and feel) gutted me. But you do your job. You're human, and you're gonna feel. You'll make morbid jokes because it's how you cope with so much of what you see. It's horrendous sometimes. I'm new and not very tough, but I'm learning. I guess we all do. I don't know what you should feel. I DO remember that my grandmother used to tell me that if I wasn't careful I'd should all over myself. People are evil....some of 'em. Sometimes it's hard to come to terms with men's brutish and hateful ways. I understand being fucked over...lol, literally. It hurts to know that there are people of such inherent depravity. People are good...more of 'em. Sometimes it's hard to trust the compassion of truly good people when you've been beaten down and marred by another. I think that finding a way to trust the goodness in some people is worth the risk you take by trusting. There are a whole bunch of fucks who fall somewhere in the middle. They'll screw ya' over if it benefits them, but they're not likely to rise up with the evil of Lucifer. Those are the ones that, if ya' trust 'em once and you find that they're out for their own best interests, you be damned....hell, then leave 'em the fuck alone. Go on about your day. Be grateful for the few people who've proven themselves to be good, and be ready to help them out in return. Keep a good mental list of who these folks are, and never, NEVER let one of them down. I was a social worker, and LCSW, and became a physician. Started med school when I was 35 years old. I did have to go back to undergraduate for all of those pesky science classes. Took a couple years part time. I did not get a second bachelor's degree though, just the pre-requisites for medical school. A recommendation? It's scary and the possibility of suicide is always there. Last year some kid killed himself, and I know of at least 3 people who have seriouly contemplated it. Yep. I was at WFFC in '04 when I learned that a good friend of mine from med school (we had just finished junior year) had killed his wife and himself. Unfortunately, you have to pick and choose when you're gonna fall apart. If she can hold it together to get through finals, then there's a little break and some time to work all of this out...if she can just get there. Hang in there! When I was a kid, I remember the first test tube baby. Was talking with my little brother today, and reminiscing about those days. Talked about how the whole "test tube" baby thing was so far out. Never would we have dreamed it would be how he'd have a baby or two...lol. Yesterday two blastocysts were implanted into my sister-in-law's uterus. I don't guess it's actually *implanted*, but maybe "placed" is a better word. Anyway, we're hoping for a healthy baby or two. So exciting. My little bro will be an awesome dad. All I can say is that this is a real pisser. Damn I feel for her. Timing really IS everything when you're trying to get through medical school. Regardless of whether she works out the big problem right now, maybe she can figure out a way to set it aside for the time....because right now is REAL important. An aside...of course medical school is stressful. It's INSANELY stressful. I frequently think of my good friend who, while I was at WFFC in '04 killed his wife and himself. Ugh.
