  1. I don't have any checks. I haven't in about 5 years. I'm a 100% online banking dork.
  2. Some of mine aren't there either: Dirty Diapers Canadians But then again, maybe that is just one phobia.
  3. Nobody is saying that what happened wasn't tragic. So are people dying due to hook turns and other avoidable skydiving causes, yet we post incident reports about them. What some people are getting at is that to avoid the problems in the future, and make something positive come out of the tragedy, people have to learn from the mistakes. Some people (not referring to AggieDave) are clearly in denial about the facts of the situation. They dispute the University's own findings and try to deflect the blame from where it belongs. Yes, the situation is sad, but the people involved (everyone connected to the bonfire) are responsible. That applies to the administration, the students engaged in the activity, and the overall culture that frowned upon a serious, safety-oriented approach to the school's traditional event.
  4. Depends. How is the track record on the event? How gullible are the students? Are the students willing to suspend their own common sense regarding the things they are seeing with their own eyes because the university says everything is okay?
  5. Well.... My view of a "traditional bon fire" does not involve something that weighs up to 2,000,000 pounds and stands up to 109 feet tall. Clearly, this bonfire is a bit unusual. With that should come an unusual level of care and planning. From the University's own report, those were substandard. Poor skills, poor oversight, poor planning and a cultural disregard for safety (which Kallend mentioned) were the main factors. While I feel bad for Dave, and sad about the people that died, this event was avoidable. While on a large scale and sanctioned by the school, it held many elements in common with the more normal "here, hold my beer" type of incidents that are usual Darwin Awards fodder. I guess my view is that if you laugh at the humor in the tragedy of others, you ought to be at least accepting of those that laugh at yours. Of course, the other simple alternative is to be sensitive to all of them.

    Baby Names

The funny thing is that Hope was my wife's middle name. She hated it, so changed her middle name to her maiden name when we got married. So I think I'll take a pass on suggesting that one.

Lawrocket, Try this site, and do a search for the most popular: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/ In my case, I'm trying to use that as a factor to eliminate names. But it also interesting to track the popularity of names through the years. And I'm definitely with you on all three of your exclusion factors.

    Baby Names

Been looking at that one, and others, Ivan. I've also pretty much decided to rule out any name in the SSA's list of the top 50 most popular. I don't want my kid to have the same name as half the other kids in his/her class. But thanks for throwing out a helpful link.

Been there, done that. Strawberry, Wrigley, Septic, Poppy, etc. That was the previous joke thread.

I don't think so, but I admit it does sound better than "Delmarva".

    Yo, Deuce!

    > What a sorry state of customer service these days. You'd think after being a customer for so long, that things would be obvious. But no, another package that will go back "return to sender". This is almost as bad as the time she accidently mailed me your moose. I had to call Fedex and have it rerouted back before you missed it.

    Baby Names

Suggestions, for both boy and girl names? Uncommon (but not freakish) names are preferred, as are ones of Hebrew or Russian origin. We did the joke names earlier in another thread, so I don't need those again, funny as they were.

    Yo, Deuce!

I so dont want to know what else in in that folder Karen's website, of course. Can you ask her where the hell my last order is?

    Yo, Deuce!

I already have your site bookmarked at work under "Personal - Shopping". Uh oh. Potentially bad for my wallet. Good for yours.

What can we say? Don and I are just bad-ass freefliers.

    Yo, Deuce!

You have it all wrong, Deuce. Don and I planned it that way. We were intentionally doing the Compare & Contrast thing.
  17. I don't think so. From my understanding, they are "bearer instruments". So just proving their purchase wouldn't be enough. They would actually have to prove theft, not just that they at one time had the ticket. It is like a dollar bill. I had it, then I gave it to you in exchange for something, so now it is yours. Matching serial number to possession at some point isn't enough. So, if you win the lottery, don't tell anyone until you are at the lottery office claiming your prize. Then talk to a good lawyer and a good accountant. No. Scratch that. Just give me the money.

So, JP, when do you think you'll have stills uploaded to your website? I have leftover boogie money that is burning a hole in my pocket, and I want some pics! I'm sure I'm not the only one.

  22. Well, the problem is that he could only manage 1 or 2 jumps a day when you factor in the time it takes him to walk back from his landing area... He did have a lot of problems getting back into the country. Damned immigration.
