  1. UPS. Let the man in brown take the hit. On the serious side: If you know for certain that it is over, has no chance of rebuilding, then cut it quick. Without being rude, make that clear if she calls again. Do you have caller ID? If so, you don't have to take further calls. Without adding any additional hurt, wrap it up so you can both move on.
  2. You whore.... I hope you had protection Relax. No Canadians were involved, so he was probably safe.
  3. Sometimes freedom of speech is abused too, inciting hatred and violence, but that doesn't mean that the appropriate solution is to revoke the 1st Amendment and ban free speech. I'm not suggesting we revoke the 2d Amendment. I'm suggesting we adhere to it, including the often-ignored ending.
  4. Wasn't there a Franklin half-dollar before the Kennedy? What did Kennedy do more than Franklin? [ducks under desk] I think it was also significantly different. And I'm not debating Kennedy vs. Franklin.
  5. Do you actually read these links before you post them, or read what anyone writes before you reply? The previous person correctly noted that the only coin to come close to having the actual person change was the dollar coin. Let's compare the Sacagawea and Susan B. Anthony dollars. Different metals. Different edges. Different reverse side image. Different diameter.
  6. Please refer to that US Mint Timeline and show me where we changed the person shown on a particular coin. Not minted a different coin, but just replaced the person.
  7. You don't scare us. We had a sudden realization that we didn't want Canada, so we withdrew our invasion force from the border. Both guys with buckets were called home. Remeber, guns don't kill people, buckets kill people. So sayeth the gun lobby, anyway. But, amazing as it is, even they can understand that there is no reason to annex Canada.
  8. Preservation of the Union. But the application of force was a cause as well. If you remove it from both sides, you are right back where you started. Violent action and violent reaction. We'd have been better off to skip both. Lots of them, in the end, the South was held by the Union. Same as above. Basically a zero-sum. We didn't suddenly annex Canada or something. The confederacy. But we, as a nation, derived that threat from within. French, Germans, Irish, Italians, Poles, Scandinavians, Scottish I didn't phrase that like I wanted, and it isn't enough of an issue with me to push. Conceded.
  9. Actually, we don't have to. There are plenty of reasons for us not to. You think he wasn't good at what he did? Or are you reacting in an emotional way because you disagree with what he did. There are plenty of things he was really bad at during his presidency. Foriegn relations. The economy. Realistic defense planning. Take your pick. Another example of what? One president replacing another in being honored? I don't understand the need to replace the focus of someone being honored. What do you think about taking the Lincoln Memorial and having some people use chisels and concrete to convert it into the Clinton Memorial? Maybe we should issue a memo to change the Jefferson Memorial into the Carter Memorial while we are at it. Do I suggest those? No. They are ridiculous, just like changing the people shown on existing currency or honored in an existing airport. It is the whim du jour and the epitome of conservative political correctness.
  10. Yup. I don't know why I even bother any more. Some people (not referring to Kevin) simply don't get it. They aren't able to comprehend the ramifications of their actions or grasp the flaws in their arguments. It is a roller coaster. The problem is that getting off is an admission of failure. While children still bring loaded handguns from home into elementary schools like the one my wife works in, I'll continue to see it as a problem that needs a solution. Some people, like Kevin, disagree with me, but are (I think) willing to work toward a solution. Others are simply to close-minded and stubborn to see that there even is a problem.
  11. The lesson that freedom requires effort, and sometimes fighting for it? That isn't the lesson you'd learn about the men with guns that killed Lincoln, Kennedy or Martin Luther King, Jr., now is it? What did you learn from the pictures about the revolutionary and civil wars? And what did you learn from the text telling you that leaders have been assassinated since there were leaders? That it's the tool's fault? The premise that you will stand there with a rifle and fight off another attacking nation is absurd, where it was practical at the time of the American revolution, if your neighbors did likewise. That is where the militia played into the 2d amendment, which you neglect to consider. Your rifle won't be that helpful against tanks, mortars, artillery, cruise missiles and the odd NBC threat a hostile force could field. The civil war? Please tell me what was solved by the application of lethal force in the civil war. What territories were taken and held? What opposing threat was wiped out? Who was killed, other than Americans? As to the assassinations? I learned that without the firearms, the attempts might not have been successful. Nobody walked through all the guards to throttle them with their hands. Firearms provided an easy, instantaneous, distant and lethal way for them to express themselves. To me, that is not progress.
  12. Actually, we don't have to. There are plenty of reasons for us not to. I'll toss out another example: Washington National Airport Surely that president did something worthwhile, yet the name got changed anyway. Sometimes people don't know how to leave well enough alone.
  13. Nope. They should be there. They represent a lesson we are failing to learn. The lesson that freedom requires effort, and sometimes fighting for it? That isn't the lesson you'd learn about the men with guns that killed Lincoln, Kennedy or Martin Luther King, Jr., now is it?
  14. Nope. They should be there. They represent a lesson we are failing to learn.
  15. I know Mike has an axe to grind, but why the serious hostility toward your northern neighbors? Are you bitter about not keeping up with our higher levels of intelligence and civility?
  16. You guys are the ones with interchanges so bad they are named the "mixing bowl".
  17. Kallend, Mine is up, and I hardly think it is hubris. Honestly, it is more for me than anyone else. It keeps my information handy for licenses, and provides me a reminder of things to work on. The entries are honest assessments of my jumps, rather than any brag-fest. The entries with "TDFTM" for distance (too damned far to measure), or the landings where I write that I bounced on my ass are hardly examples of hubris. Some other people look at it. It generates a lot of hits from interested whuffos. I usually send them to uspa.org and dz.com. Friends I'm in sporadic touch with also check it to see where I'm jumping and how I'm doing. My online logbook also includes names of people I jump with, as I can get them. In at least one occasion, it is also a reminder and memory about someone that died skydiving.
  18. Wingnut, Pogue isn't like asshat. It is more like being a REMF, if that tells you anything.
  19. The ones that make me laugh are near my work. No joke: "Condos from the low $700,000s." For that much money, you don't even get a yard or all your walls to yourself. Unbelievable.
  20. Chris, You need to look at the bright side. You are already fucked up, and you didn't even need to buy beer. Think of how much money you'll save! Or you could just by some really pricey gourmet hot chocolate.
  21. The people at Skydive Virginia were awesome when I was there. But I still have to say, Maryland!
  22. Chris, While there are more tests to be done, take it as good news. Here are the good things: 1) You are alive, and you very nearly weren't. 2) You are physically mobile, with your intellect also intact. 3) You have found a doctor that seems to know what is going on. 4) The prognosis, though long, is good. 5) Your friends support you. 6) The sky will still be there, whenever you are ready.
  23. While I prefer Maryland to Virginia, I pretty much agree with Lou on the issues of commute and cost. To put it bluntly, unless you are coming from some other really expensive place (Manhattan, San Fran, etc.), be prepared to be shocked and bent over. It is not a friendly area when it comes to cost of living. I live fairly close in. I'm outside the beltway, but not by a whole lot. Things can get cheaper as you out, but then you start really racking up your commute time. I commute about 8 miles each way. It takes me ~20 minutes in the morning (7am) and 30-40 minutes at 5pm. Around here, my commute is considered pretty good. It depends on what your job will pay, how convenient you want things to be, and what type of housing you are looking for. Some people suck it up and live in the city in an apartment. Others take the opposite extreme and have commutes from hell. People commute in to downtown from freakin' West Virginia. I shit you not. There are more DZs toward the Virginia side. Lou could give you more info on them. I've only been to one VA dropzone. On the northern side, there are Delmarva, Chambersburg and Cross Keys. Be prepared to drive.
  24. You said you have server space. Is it strictly space on a rented server, or do you have one where you have database capabilities. My jumplog is online: http://www.jennandjustin.com/skydive-jumplog.asp It uses a SQL database with active server pages. There are open source databases if you don't have a commercial one.
  25. Taken to PM (in a friendly way), so edited out.
