  1. hmm.... advice.... 1. get in your car. 2. drive to the dropzone. 3. sign up for a couple of coach jumps. 4. get your radios 5. get on the plane. 6. get out of the plane. I was on radios for several more jumps than most AFFers, and still like to use them on coach jumps because I'm still figuring out where to flare. What worked for me was to use landmarks... when my shoes are even with the top of the flags or windsocks, I start my flare. (in theory...I'm still very much a newbie so I still screw it up regularly) If I begin my flare when my feet are even with the top of the flag, I usually have a good landing. Don't be ashamed about needing radios. They're a learning tool, and everyone has a different learning curve. Have them talk you through landing a couple of times just like you were doing AFF 1. Tell them "pretend I know as much as your average first jump student, and give me all the information you would give them." I did this on my AFF 6 because I'd been having so much trouble, and my landings on level 7 and 8 were GREAT, and I had no radios at all.
  2. they're still required to give you at least a 30 minute lunch break, even if you are free to leave your desk whenever you wish.
  3. I'm wanting to buy an audible. I just got a brand new wonderful helmet for my birthday, so I now have a place to put one. There's so many out there.... which is best for a newbie? What have been your experiences with these and other audibles?
  4. In the AFF course I did, even if you were stable and had an AWESOME arch, they didn't completely let go of you til level 4. On level 4, you had only 1 JM, and if you were stable, they moved from your side to in front of you, keeping hold, and then, if you're still stable, they let go, and your job was to just fall in place looking at their altimeter and shouting the altitude, and waving and pulling at 5.
  5. how are they supposed to know you're current without an updated logbook?
  6. {{{{{{{{{{VIBES}}}}}}}}}}} if you need anything at all, drop me a PM.
  7. if his logbook wasn't up to date, maybe they asked for his protrack to verify currency? I had to read into the camera for both Perris and Elsinore.
  8. here are a few sources for you: http://www.uspa.org/about/sport.htm the USPA site... lots of info here. they would be where to start. http://www.electro.ru/airclub/skydive_history.htm http://www.afn.org/skydive/culture/ just go to www.google.com and type in "skydiving history"
  9. Yeah! hmmph. GO LA KINGS!!!
  10. The makers of these watches advise that wearers not use them for skydiving.
  11. I'm not a rigger, but I've seen at least three different riggers do repacks... they all took the main out if it wasn't out already due to a cutaway.
  12. hmm... I'm liking this skyhook thing...
  13. hopefully you get overtime pay?
  14. stupid newbie question alert: what's the difference between a regular RSL and a skyhook?
  15. and a "Reagan" dime would probably be a completely different looking coin too. That's the thing... we can't really say what it will look like, because its just a proposal now.
  16. doesn't matter. Wings are something earned. Not just by doing a few static line jumps, but also through military service in general. Someone who has not earned the honor to wear them should not wear them in something other than a reinactment situation.
  17. I'm going to do both. At that point in time, I will have some extra cash, so I am planning on both a canopy class and tunnel time to improve my skills all around.
  18. Sure! The difficult thing with your question is that any coin with a slightly different design could be considered a different coin. For the purpose of this list, I'm going to consider coins of the same denomination to be different designs of the same coin. The Dollar coins: Started with Eisenhower. Next, Susan B Anthony, now Sacajawea. Quarter: Liberty Bust to seated liberty to standing liberty to current Washington design. Dime: Liberty bust to seated Liberty to winged head (Mercury) to FDR. Nickel: went from Liberty Head to seated liberty to indian head to buffalo head to current Jefferson design. Penny: Went from liberty head to indian head to Lincoln So, historically, the dollar coin has been the only one where we've switched between historical figures. The others were from mythology or just a general depiction (indian head) of an ethnic group, rather than a specific individual. There is a precedent. That said, I am against the change for several reasons: 1. Roosevelt was put on the dime to commemorate his work with March of Dimes for polio research. There is a historical reason to have him on that particular coin. 2. Tradition dictates that someone only goes on a coin or stamp after their death. Roosevelt died in 1945. The Roosevelt dime was minted in 1946. Reagan isn't dead yet. 3. The Reagan family has spoken out against the move. Their wishes need to be respected. They do not feel this is an appropriate way to honor Pres. Reagan.
  19. Alternative Schools - Overview An alternative school is a public school within a school district that has its own principal, school building, and budget and is established to serve the needs of a particular group of students, e.g. those considered to be at-risk of dropping out. The classes are usually smaller and focus on a more hands-on, relevant approach to learning with an educational program leading to a high school diploma or GED. DEFINITION: A separate school, within a public school district and with its own principal, which offers an educational program leading to a high school diploma or GED. To qualify as an alternative school, the program is designed to meet student's individual needs and includes the minimum course requirements approved by the State Board of Education. In contrast to an alternative school, a school district may include an alternative program as part of the curricula at a traditional middle school, junior high school, or high school. http://164.64.166.11/alted/alternative_schools/ The school district I was in for high school had two alternative schools... El Camino, which was the "continuation school" for kids that couldn't deal with regular school stuff, and a school within a school at El Dorado, which was for pregnant teens and mothers. Alternative school doesn't just mean for behavior problems, but it usually refers to "at risk" kids... kids who, for some reason, are in danger of dropping out. However, there are also alternative schools that focus on kids with special talents. Troy Tech specializes in kids that are gifted in math and science and are planning on going into related majors in college. OCHSA (Orange County High School for the Arts) focuses on kids with special talents in music, dance, and visual arts. They're special schools that focus on the issues of the particular group of kids.

    shipipng

just walk into your local fedex or ups depot and ask. they'll have the boxes there, can sell (or will probably just give) you a box to put it in, and tell you how much it weighs and how much it costs to ship.
  22. first thing I'm doing after I get my A is taking a canopy control class so I can learn how to do this stuff! Trying to figure it out by just reading about it online is imposssible.
  23. I'm booking tunnel time after I get my A. Before then, tunnel time seems like cash that would be better put towards jumps, but after I'm a licensed jumper, I'm looking forward to the opportunity to improve my skills in the tunnel where there's fewer distractions and stuff to think about than in freefall.
