During that time period, having a religion other than the Church of England WAS a crime. ~~~~~~~QUOTE~~~~~~~~ During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Puritan-leaning religious opinions were generally tolerated, but when King James came to power in 1604 the Church of England again began to root out, prosecute, and jail those who openly believed the Church needed to be purified of its false ceremonies, non-Scriptural teachings, and superstitious rituals. Across England, small groups began to separate themselves from their persecuting Churches, to form their own secret congregations. One such group was centered not too far from Sherwood Forest, in a small village in Nottinghamshire named Scrooby. Led by Richard Clyfton, John Robinson, and William Brewster, by 1606 the group was secretly holding meetings in Scrooby Manor, where Brewster was employed as the postmaster. It was not long, however, before the authorities were onto them. The group made the decision to flee England to Holland, where they had heard they could practice their religion without the threat of jail, punishments, and fines. After several failed attempts in 1607, they all managed to make it to Amsterdam in 1608, and later migrated en masse to Leiden, Holland in early 1609. http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/History/religion.php ~~~~~~~~~~~QUOTE~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Pilgrims were a small group of people who made a great impact on world history. Their story begins in England, sometime after King Henry VIII started the independent Church of England, also known as the Anglican or Episcopal Church. Most of the countries surrounding England did not agree with the King’s decision. Many people in England did not agree either. Some wanted the Anglican Church to be more like the old Catholic church. Others wanted it to be even more plain and to rely more on Bible teachings rather than ceremony. In most European countries in those days it was against the law to worship differently than the official church of that country. There was no such thing as freedom of religion, or even democracy for that matter. Governments were usually ruled by a monarch (a king or queen), who had the power to decide how everyone should think, act or believe. People who didn’t were often put in prison, and sometimes even killed. http://pilgrim-monument.org/oldsite/visitor/pilgriminfosheet.html

personally, I don't like that they took a special symbol and gave it to everyone. Its like taking a black belt and giving it to every single martial artist. Its there for the taking, but it ought to be EARNED. That said, it doesn't matter who's wearing what. Everyone knows who's got the skill and the training and the balls to do what needs to be done, and that's whats important. It isn't in the clothes, its in the person.

I can't either. I have to work hard not to bring up past issues in an argument, because it is so damn easy! it took me a while, but I've learned that you can only get somewhere by dealing with the current issue. dragging up the past just upsets everyone more.

the US is the only one with a drinking age of 21. Japan and Iceland are age 20, so is New Zeland, but they make exceptions in some situations.
-
Nope. Mexico is 18. quote: Legal Drinking Age The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. Grocery stores sell beer, wine and liquors. Many of these stores are open 24 hours a day. http://gomexico.about.com/cs/mexico/a/quickfacts.htm

LOL Great article!!!

now THAT makes sense! Thanks. I was picturing a tube shaped BOC.

she's right... the pilgrims got tossed out of England for their religious beliefs. They made a brief stopover in Holland, and then continued over here. as an aside, the state of Georgia was originally a penal colony, I believe.
-
do they make left handed rigs??
-
I'm trying to figure this out... I've seen the student rigs with the two handles on the BOC, but not up close. HTF can the reserve JM pull from his side, without pulling the pilot chute straight through the boc and causing a horseshoe? Its gotta be built differently, but I haven't been able to get close enough to one to see.

oooohhhh... those are mighty purty.

Tom, I like what you've had to say, and the way you've said it. Best of luck in your endeavours with abused children. I've done some work at shelters myself, and it is not an easy task. -Kris A-44563

like I said in another thread: I'm buzzed after half a beer. After a whole beer, my BAC is still WAY below the legal limit, but there is no freakin' way I would get behind the wheel of a car. it just wouldn't be safe. I don't drink often at all, so alcohol affects me more, because I'm not used to it.

Return from "winter breaks" - do you get the shakes?
Nightingale replied to xavenger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
lol... its funny. I'm more scared on the ground now than I am in the door. Used to have MAJOR door phobia. I'm a little freaked and nervous til I manifest, and then I'm concentrating on exit, dirt dive, packing, etc, til time to get on the plane, and then I'm fine. LOL. -
