Dems had "Sweetheart" Segregation Deal
Nightingale replied to Gravitymaster's topic in Speakers Corner
throwing more money at the problem can help, if done the right way. A big problem with schools in economically depressed areas is that they can't retain teachers. The new teachers start there, work for a year or two to get some experience, and then move on to a school in an area with more money. So, the schools in poorer areas get stuck with new teachers who haven't had the time to develop good classroom management techniques and general teaching strategies, because those things come with time. Raise the salaries of teachers in poorer areas, and you'll raise the quality of teachers at the school, because now, the teachers would have an incentive to stay. They have no incentive to stay now, so they don't. Also, money should be used to make repairs to older buildings, to make sure every student has a textbook, and to make sure every teacher has a teacher's edition of that textbook and doesn't have to share with another teacher. Money definitely won't fix everything, but it can fix some things, if applied correctly. -
Rape can be deadly. What if the rapist has an STD? My opinion: if they're in my home without permission, they obviously intend harm. If I owned a gun, I would not have a problem using it, because I feel I would be in legitimate fear for my life. The only reason I don't own a gun is that my roommate has asked me not to because they frighten her, and I won't bring a weapon into my home where someone else who lives here is uncomfortable with it. Last thing I want is her getting scared and getting a hold of it, and then doing something dumb.

Councilman Demands Bush Photos be Removed
Nightingale replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
that's just stupid. I hope the guy fights it in court and wins. Barring someone from displaying photos of the president is idiotic. -
I'd like to see Peterson have to live with what he did. Dying is too easy. Lock him in a cell with a picture of his victims on the wall, and throw away the key. Give him a nice loooong time to think about what he did and the consequences.

Have you ever wanted to smile and cry at the same time?

try leaving food out for the kitty. many times, if something hasn't happened to them, they'll come home when they're hungry. -
Have you ever wanted to smile and cry at the same time?

Today, I went shopping to pick some christmas stuff. I walked into a pet supply store, thinking of picking up a christmas gift for my kitties, and the store was doing pet adoptions today, cats, dogs, and a few rabbits. I usually try to avoid rescue days at the pet store, because I just want to take all the furry ones home, and always leave feeling sad, but today, I had to get some stuff, so I went inside. I was looking around, when I noticed a lady in her mid 40s, reading a sign that was on one of the cages for two kitties up for adoption. All of a sudden, the lady burst into tears and started crying on her husband's shoulder. She took a moment to compose herself, and then walked over to the table where the pet rescue people were sitting. I took the opportunity to walk over and read the sign. The sign on the cage with the two cats said that the cats had belonged to a local marine who was killed in action in Iraq, and that the cats were very attached to each other, and the rescue was hoping to find them a home together. I overheard the lady telling the rescue workers that she wanted both the cats. The lady explained that her own son had been killed in Iraq, and that she wanted to do something to help out the animals that were left behind because of another marine's death. She showed the rescue staff a picture of her son, all dressed up in his uniform. After hearing her story, the rescue staff didn't even want to charge her for the cats, but she insisted, and from what I could guess by their reactions, she wrote her check out for quite a bit more than the required donation for the kitties. After picking up the basic requirements for new kitties, the couple left, and it seemed like half the store wanted to cry because of the sad story, and smile because two little furballs had found a new home. When I left the store, two more people were approaching the rescue table wanting to adopt a critter. I walked out with a smile on my face, and a tear in my eye. I'm glad those two kitties found a home, but there are so many more out there... -
I've got a pic I took of a raccoon. It's on my website. www.nightingalesnest.net click on the travel page, then on new orleans, and scroll down. If you like the pic, I can send you the large version, which will blow up to the size you need.

Exactly. A gun is not going to jump out of it's box, load itself, aim, and pull its own trigger. A person has to do all that. Without the person, a gun is just a useless hunk of metal. Accidental gun deaths are caused by the same thing most accidental deaths are caused by...human error.

Oh well . . . boys will be boys . . . whacha gonna do?
Nightingale replied to quade's topic in Speakers Corner
hehe... me too. My brother and I were always blowing stuff up. Dad put a stop to it when my bro attempted to shoot a potato out of the exhaust of a 66 mustang. This probably was a kid just being dumb. However, the school should take it seriously to discourage any copycats. The administration who dealt with the kid with the scissors, though...that's just plain moronic. -
Don't take a break. Get it all done before you stop, while you're still used to being in school. My personal experience: 5 friends who finished high school and said they were taking "a year off" before college. Number who returned to school = 0 3 friends who "took a semester off" in college. number who returned = 1 4 friends who "took a year to work" before starting grad school. 4 years later...number who went back to school = 1 That's 10 people who planned on continuing their education and didn't. Life just got in the way. On a more positive note, out of 4 other friends from high school who didn't take any "breaks", 1 graduated from USC. 2 have completed master's degrees. 1 is in her residency at medical school. Me, I finished a master's, and am in my first year of law school. Stay in school until you've finished every degree you're ever planning on getting. Right now, you have the time budgeted for school. Stop going to school, and that time will get budgeted for other things, and you won't go back to school because you "don't have time."

ROFL. He's calling himself a shyster to poke fun at his own profession. Lawyers have to be able to laugh at themselves, considering the rather universal hatred of the profession. Nobody likes a lawyer...until they need one.

Would you roll the dice with the death penalty?
Nightingale replied to Jib's topic in Speakers Corner
don't think I'll ever find myself in that situation, but if I had a client in that situation, I'd look at the evidence... if his chance of getting off is snowball in hell, I'd advise him to take a plea. However, if the evidence is iffy or poor, trial might be a good idea. It would depend on the individual facts of the case. I haven't taken my criminal law classes yet, though, so my opinion may change. -
well, I figured posting the truth would be a good idea... wouldn't want anyone to start drinking cow menstrual stuff for no good reason. LOL.

is this really considered as pedophilic?
Nightingale replied to ianmdrennan's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't have a problem with parents taking pictures of their kids in an innocent way. Posting those pictures on the internet where any wacko could get a hold of them is probably not a good idea, though. If I were a parent, I wouldn't want some wacko wanking off to a pic of my kid in the bathtub that I'd posted innocently. -
for many people, it's a way to acknowledge where you've come from as well as where you are. It's more of a cultural reference than a racial/national origin one. It's to acknowledge that someone can be of African origin, Irish origin, Italian origin, etc... and yet still be American; it's a way to say that we're all very different, but because we're all American, there's a sameness about us too. Just because your family has settled (or been resettled) in another country, it doesn't mean you have to stop acknowledging your roots. In all honesty, though, I don't really think it matters much how people identify themselves, in the overall scheme of things. It's just a label. If you like it, use it. If not, don't. Doesn't affect me any, either way.

call asap. the longer you make her wait, the more she'll think you're not interested and look elsewhere.

taking on an animal is a huge responsibility. don't do it if she doesn't want a new pet. Course, if you bring her out to the breeder's and show her how cute they are, you've got a good chance of changing her mind.

U.S. Supreme Court rejects challenge by KKK
Nightingale replied to IanHarrop's topic in Speakers Corner
The supreme court doesn't officially hold any position at all on this matter. They declined to hear the case, and therefore, are issuing no opinion or ruling whatsoever. They did not uphold or overturn the lower court's decision. They simply declined to hear the case, period. The plaintiff petitioned the supreme court for a writ of certiorari, which, if granted, means the court will hear the case. The petition was denied. The court receives thousands of petitions for writs of certiorari per year, and only grants a very small percentage of them. Denying a petition for a writ of certiorari simply leaves the lower court's decision unaffected. However, it doesn't necessiarily mean that the supreme court agrees with the lower court. -
It's a problem of cultural interactions. The Deaf community, unlike most other disabled populations, has formed a very tightly knit community that is quite important to its members. The parents fear that, by changing their children from deaf to hearing, the children will no longer be members of their culture and community. Many Deaf people don't see themselves as disabled, rather, they just see themselves as different. In their minds, changing a child from Deaf to hearing is akin to changing someone's culture from african to european. While they don't see anything wrong with either culture, they want their kids brought up in their own culture. While those of us who are members of the hearing community may see cochlear implants as fixing a defect, many members of the Deaf community don't believe that there is anything that requires fixing.

Mysterioso. Hands down. You can get it at REI or at www.mysterioso.com I've got the long sleeve shirt and long pant, but they make it in short sleeve and bike-short style too. It's made for kayaking, mostly, but works great for skydiving, because it's mostly windproof. Warmest things I've ever worn and thin enough to fit under my jumpsuit. I've tried the under armor gear, and mysterioso is way better.
