hehe - ya, but... the |33+ programming squad need to keep it 'hard' for folks to get into... thus "ya, notepad is how you start". If someone really wants to learn, IMO, its best to start that way. But when I had to throw something up in a day and a half at work, i did it all in Frontpage. Skipping lunch, I was able to do it. Ya, its loaded with alot of crap, but it works; and then i was able to turn it over to a computer novice to maintain. Thats why programs like that are good for beginners or someone with limited time. IMO of course. Jen Arianna Frances

Depends on the server its run on. MS2000Servers would have no problem running a tight ship w/ Frontpage if the admin knows half what s/he is supposed to know. Agreed that bare bones is the best to start because not only do you learn tons, but the page will look EXACTLY like you want it to (browser compatability aside). But a beginners site... if a gui editor is needed, Frontpage will save you a TON of aggrevation - as you learn more code you'll find that Frontpage messes up alot of stuff and adds code where code need'nt be... then you're ready for notepad 24/7. IMO, Dreamweaver is great to start with if you already have a pretty firm place in desgn vs programming. But with so many options out there (there are tons and tons), whatever you feel most comfortable with is the best place to start. If you want opinions on each program I belive download.com has an opinions poll/page with each link. Good luck

Get yourself a good 'how to directory' and use notepad. Seriously. Thats how I started, and now that I'm doing alot of .net - boy am I glad I started that way! If you need the gui aspect of a visual editor frontpage would be easiest for you to use. I like visual editors if I find I'm doing alot of repetative stuff, but mostly stick to bones versions such as Crimson Editor, or my current (linux) favorite - bluefish. I think I started with one of those 'learn in 24 hours' books which cover all the HTML you need to know - the other stuff.... well thats taken 6 years of night school Good luck, feel free to PM with any questions

Web designer guru's or anyone I need some help

Well... to each their own. Seeing as I do all my web programming on a windows machine in Visual InterDev, I'm sure you can understand why I would program for IE first, and as such you would understand the reluctancy to program for Mozilla first. But at the same time my second machine is Linux based - and I've participated w/ Bugzilla for a while now, I understand how they work.... but that doesn't detract from the general public. Most people are not going to put mozilla/netscape on their machine - most just fire up their dell that already has IE on it, thus good programming practice would be to cater to the lowest common denominator right? Don't hold yer breath We can't get structure with programming languages and platforms let alone anything else! But to tell you the truth, I like it that way - the constant evolution keeps you on your toes. Jen Arianna Frances -

Ya, actually thats not a bad idea. Both IE and Netscape provide simple ways for retrrieving the browser's CSS property values. To retrieve an element's computed width and height in IE: objWidth = document.all.myDiv.offsetWidth; objHeight = document.all.myDiv.offsetHeight; (Note that in IE, 'document.all.' isn't required. Besides, why keep troubling the browser with repeatedly querying the DOM?) And in Netscape: objWidth = document.layers.myDiv.clip.width; objHeight = document.layers.myDiv.clip.height; There's other ways, the only problems using CSS for cross browser compatability is that it takes a HELL of a lot longer as far as production time. I'll probably get jumped on for this, but I'll program for IE first and after the sites release or version 1.0 release to client I"ll go back and fix it for mozilla (which can often be a pain to work with). I have yet to run across a client who uses anything other than IE. Good luck! Jen Arianna Frances -

From the look sof the page your referencing, it should be fairly easy to do in either php, asp or javascript - with the latter being from the reference. I don't do design (I do back end stuff) - so I pay handsomely for the front end design stuff cause its not worth the hassle. Check out www.templatemonster.com. I find they're good for most companies. I just finished a website for a local church who had one thing in mind. Well... their idea sucked. So I came up with another idea and they went with it (as do most of the clients I do that for). Try that - sometimes they just don't know whats available. Good luck, Jen Arianna Frances -
Good idea! I'm hoping to get a new laptop later this year, and I'll get a really good case then. Thanks! Jen Arianna Frances

Ya, thats what I'm looking for. At least I know its available. Thanks! Jen Arianna Frances

Ya, carryon is a given... but does it have to be the only bag thats carried on? With the limits they put on carry on items if I want to bring other stuff - which I do, like my camera, MP3 player, cross-stitching stuff, then I need a seperate bag. Well... I'd like to combine it into one bag (which is what I tried this last trip) and it left the laptop without enough protection. I want to get a nice 'case' for the laptop that I could put into this shoulder bag and still have room for the other stuff without turning it into a huge ass bag. Jen Arianna Frances
-
Those seem good... but are still a bit large. I'm looking for something similar to a laptop like sleave. I want to be able to put it into the shoulder bag I brought with me without filling up the entire bag. I'm fairly new to the 'laptop scene' so perhaps there isn't one at all and I'm just grasping at straws... Jen Arianna Frances

On my recent trip to CA I brought my laptop. I didn't bring the bag I normally carry it in because I wanted to bring a different shoulder bag to carry additional stuff. I placed the laptop (padded with a coat of mine) in the bag with the other 'stuff' and must have done something becuase somewhere between arriving in CA and turning it on the next morning it died. There's some type of hardware failure, which probably means that the bag didn't do a good enough job protecting it. I feel like an idiot... but I really don't like the laptop bag. Anyone have a slim HARD laptop case/bag that they like? I'd like something that wouldn't mean sacrificing space. TIA, Jen Arianna Frances

ya... but you gotta make sure the camera crew are all dz.commers too... Would be very interesting. Jen Arianna Frances

Can you imagine the editing they must do with those pictures?? If they could make me look that good - sure, I'll do it!! Jen Arianna Frances

You admit the 80's, I'll admit 97. Didn't even know the guy was still around until he stumbled into town when I was in College. Sad part was that I had a good time Didn't mean to hijack... don't know a think about NM, but I will wish you good luck with the move and discovering all that NM has to offer. Jen Arianna Frances

hahaha - OMG, you posted all the right ones Kris! I'm sitting here just laughing over this - I was back in the team room to get my camera and just missed the whole pie incident! I saw it from a distance. I was pissed I missed such a momentous event Barb Duke was having WAY too much fun hitting Michele in 'all the right places' hehehe. Kudos to kris for planning it, and very well - even cleaning up the mess afterwards! What a sweetie! Don't worry, Michele wasn't too mad, she still got in the tunnel with us afterwards - after the much needed shower of course Congrats again! Remember... now you can get rockin' and rollin'. Good job! Jen PS - word of warning to ya Kris... Michele has been thinking of the best ways to get you back all day! Arianna Frances

Hey Lou!! Did that load eventually get up? As we were leaving everyone got out of the plane! Michele and I thought that that guy chickened out It was a very cool day - still smiling about it! hehe And, as a heterosexual female, yes, those chicks were hot! See you in December! Jen Arianna Frances

Hey dude - hope you get to do lots of jumpin' this weekend, be sure to tell me all about it! Yep, did a tandem with Ed yesterday - he's so cool! It was a great reminder for me, as it was 8 months since my last one, and with all the AFF stuff, I was second guessing - but the tandem was cool! Back flippin' stuff - very fun! Ed is so cool, very professional and we had a TON of fun! I love this stuff!!! They were filming some reality TV show there and oneo f teh camera guys from that troupe nearly got his head chopped off by a proppeller, took everyone yelling to get him to leave the runway....dork Elsinore rocks, all the folks there are SO cool! Got to meet some cool dz.commers, ya'll rock! I think Perris rox too, but I haven't jumped there yet, so I can't comment on that. Michele and I are having tons of fun. Lots of busy/stress type of stuff - but this shit is cool. Will post more about that later, promise. Talk to you when I get home Darius! Thanks everybody! Jen Arianna Frances
