Bleah The subject line said "great" 80's songs. So where are they? Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby?????? eek, all you need is milli vanilli in that list... Check out ROCK, not this R&B crap. The 80s had some great rock - timeless stuff. *think AC/DC, Metallica, Bon Jovi, Van Halen...* Jen Arianna Frances

I happen to agree with you. It is very sad for music history that Elvis is credited with being the first 'rock and roll' artist. And even sadder that that myth lives on today. Truth be told he was not. All Elvis did was make rock and roll acceptible to white suburban kids. Before him, rock and roll was purely race records. You had guys like Huey "Piano" Smith, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, and countless others who were the true pioneers of rock and roll. But good white folks in the early 50s didn't listen to race records. Along came Elvis who did listen to those records, and all his music was heavily influenced by their style. And since he was a white kid, all of a sudden, it became acceptible. As a result Elvis is credited with being the first - another tribute to black americans being held down in the late 40s and 50s Thankfully that opression didn't last much longer - but today, well... I don't call the majority of music black america seems to listen to as music. Jen Edit to add: This explains things well: http://www.hoyhoy.com/dawn_of_rock.htm "When you read most books on the origin of rock and roll, they describe an explosion that hit around 1954 or '55. All of a sudden, Elvis, Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and others were playing perfectly developed rock and roll, as if it came out of nowhere. Some portray it as a magical moment in a recording studio, with musicians goofing around during a break and playing some unrehearsed jam, and somehow accidentally inventing a whole new type of music. Ridiculous. The more sober authors say, though also in error, that it was a mixture of country music and R&B (an accurate description of rockabilly, which was not the original form of rock and roll). When these books describe the "roots" of rock and roll, they usually start with the blues of the 1930's or earlier, artists like Robert Johnson and Charley Patton, and make references to Chicago blues artists like Howling Wolf and Muddy Waters, and then jump right up to 1954, completely skipping over the hard rocking sax-based R&B of the period 1948 to 1953. I probably won't be up there until a bit later in the summer but the folks up there are great! Especially if you're unlicensed you just show up and let manifest know you need folks to jump with - and you'll have several to choose from. Once you have your license its much the same - everyone is nice

Its easy to get to Jumptown from Avon - you go 91 north out of Hartford into MA, then in Greenfield, take 2 East to Orange. JTown has a ton of instructors - I have never seen anyone wait for an instructor. I also did my AFF in Sebastian which was fantastic (Rob and Uwe are the bomb!), but I still wish I had done it at JTown as the instruction is second to none. They use a slightly different program than Sebastian and most other DZs (including CT if I recall correctly) and it is much better IMO. You can't go wrong doing your training at JTown. The majority of the instructors have been doing it FOR YEARS and are really on top of their game - trust me, you won't be disappointed. Its worth the drive. I live in Providence and drive up to JTown and have enjoyed every day I go (when we're jumping of course) Jen edit to add: oh, ok, I see your doing it at CK. Great choice! I love CK - next to JTown its my favorite dropzone. As far as a dropzone to jump at when your licensed... Jumptown. Great vibe, great people, great planes, great (new) facilities... seriously, it rocks! Arianna Frances

Dave Ramsey, being from TN I'm sure you've heard of him. Thanks to him and his total money makeover I'm working on being debt free (even my school loans are now paid off, credit cards will be paid off next month and personal loan I took out for AFF/rig, and two fairly new cars (2004 and 2006 models) by year end). Hopefully we will have a substantial down payment on a home by spring 07. It's common sense stuff, but it really works. Check him out: http://www.daveramsey.com Good luck, Jen Arianna Frances

Typically, you'd want life insurance for 8 to 10 times what your current salary is - I've been quoted $117/month... Jen Arianna Frances

Wow - and he's only 51... But, in his defense, he's battled alcoholism, been treated for throat/mouth cancer and had hip replacement surgery... must have been real hard on him... Jen Arianna Frances

Upset about not getting an acceptable pay raise the last few years?

But does that solve the issue of rising health care costs or just how the consumer should have to pay for it? Jen Arianna Frances -

How do young skydivers get to do so many jumps/tunnel time?
mailin replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
to each their own I guess... personally, I'm looking to get rid of them totally - and save up 6 months of expenses for emergencies. But then again I have my family to think of should something happen to me and they lose my income for 6 months (or longer ), and not everyone has other folks to think of. I just know I'd hate to be like my husbands great aunt and leave my family with $30k in back taxes to have to pay, after the sale of her home. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get their finances under control. Jen Arianna Frances -

Well... if they're anything like me (I'm 27 now)... its credit card debt. Working on paying off $15k and it'll hopefully be done by May... including the loan I took out to get gear (stupid stupid stupid )... but I'm also not jumping right now, so I have the extra money to put toward debt - which in reality is a better goal than tunnel time and jumps (for me anyway). I will never use a credit card for recreation again... Jen Arianna Frances -
I wonder if its possible to get the drink recipe now that its not made anymore? We could be like the nantucket nectars guys and start making it on a boat in the harbor... we'll be millionairs! Jen Arianna Frances

Yes, but only from November - April. I'll leave the humidity and huge bugs there during the spring/summer while I go to a place with just slightly less humidity and slightly smaller bugs Jen Arianna Frances
