So North Korea probably has a working thermonuclear bomb. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41140621 The bit I don't get is 'so what'? I'm curious what you guys think NK's end-game is. Let's say they get everything they want out of thir development programme - a small enough warhead to fir on a reliable missile with a large yield. Then what? It's not like they can demand anything with the threat of a nuclear attack as the answer will be 'and we'll nuke you back. Welcome to MAD'. In fact, once they complete their development (to a certain level), it seems as though they actually LOSE negotiating power. At the moment they can trade for cancelling their development and testing. They're never going to be able to trade for not nuking people. What do you think?

I wouldn't go that far. That's the sort of statement that belongs on Fox news. They're definitely a lot more biased than they used to be though.
-
Personally I think it's a horrible, horrible idea. It might work, but then again you might get your foot trapped in the lines... now you're hanging upside down under a likely spiraling canopy. Have fun with that one - your malfunction just got 100x worse.

Jewelry for the wife? So what did she catch you doing? Or what did you ask her to do?

I quit my job ages ago thanks to Soros. I get $10,000 for every anti-Trump post I make in this forum. Doesn't everyone? I assumed that was the reason there were so many of them.

As experienced skydivers we shouldn't tell / teach people this. Teach them how to make the decision, then let them decide. Saying 'you're almost certainly going to be able to land it' puts pressure on them not to cutaway because they might second guess themselves. 'Well, it feels weird to me, but people say it's landable 99% of the time, so maybe my feeling is wrong...' It's poor information. I didn't intend it like that. I wouldn't fault someone for cutting away above 500 feet. They're the pilot in command of their airship. The OP asked how others would act in that particular situation. I responded for myself. I understand, and the reply wasn't directed at you particularly - I think it's a trap we can all fall into. Just one of communication if we don't think about it.

Not sure about the parachute, but I sure feel sorry for some of those paratroopers - landing on steep slopes in deep brush doesn't look like fun! http://imagesvc.timeincapp.com/?q=70&w=1440&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftimedotcom.files.wordpress.com%2F2017%2F08%2Fdhhd523.jpg%3Fquality%3D85

The problem is that I don't think enough people care at this point except maybe the investigators... The public seems to have Russiagate burn-out.

Sometimes... The problem is that sometimes they're not and a control check up high doesn't always give the answer. I've flown one that was easily controllable for the first few checks then got stickier the longer it was under tension. I opted to leave them all the way up and land on rears. Chopping it would also have been an option. Anyone who tells you that you should have tried to land it is giving bad advice IMO. Try to control it, definitely, but they can't make that determination for you - they weren't there. Like hookitt says, try a control check next time - if it's square and flying straight you've got plenty of time to make a decision. If it feels weird to you at that point and you didn't have the confidence to land it then I think cutting away is exactly the right thing to do. That's why we have a reserve.

Trump tries, fails to use hurricane to boost ratings
yoink replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
But why would he assume his presidential ratings would be far higher when a hurricane was starting and how does that correlate to issuing a pardon? It doesn't make sense. Is he talking about TV ratings - the number of people watching TV would be higher as the hurricane is starting, so he chose to announce the pardon then to as many people as possible? Even that doesn't make sense - if more people are watching TV because a hurricane is starting it makes sense that they'd be watching shows about the hurricane, not about Donald Trump... I just don't understand the thought that went behind that statement. It's nonsensical. -

What? What ratings is he talking about? -
... and then they follow it up with something like this: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41078187 North Korea fires missile over Japan. Japanese government advises populations to evacuate to sturdy building or basement.

Who?? Spit it out - who here do you think would not come right out and say that this behavior is wrong? I don't think that any 'left wing' poster here thinks that starting with violence is right - you know, as opposed to you, Ron, and the President who all refuse to specifically condemn violence by right wing hate groups...

buying a rig out of state, help please
yoink replied to heavision's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
1) Use Chutingstar 2) Ask for the name of their DZ. Give the DZ a call in down time and ask for a couple of minutes to speak with the DZO and just check that they're a regular there, and are generally on the level. Explain your situation and the gear you're being offered - don't do this on a weekend. -
Are skydiver chicks better in bed than whuffo chicks?
yoink replied to SkyJaguar's topic in The Bonfire
Sorry, I just don't believe anyone who makes a post like this has ever been laid in their life. -
Then you'll hear the phrase 'atmospheric lensing'... I spent a little time researching flat earth theories yesterday. I feel like it killed a bunch of brain cells.

I hope you recover, Ron. I really do. Isn't there room for a science AND faith based treatment regime?

This is what Erik Prince has been pushing for. He'd take over responsibility of controlling the population and it's safe to say where that would lead; he'd be the de facto dictator. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/08/afghanistan-camp-david/537324/ Oh good, that'd be the same Blackwater that said it was getting out of the security business in Iraq after murdering 17 civilians. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/jul/22/usa.iraq Yup, they've certainly got the pedigree for a despotic sci-fi super-corporation.

A few good things to come out of Charlottesville
yoink replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Yet another nonsense post - and I mean that literally. It makes no sense... Not having a statue of something doesn't mean you automatically reject its history, or ignore the history of every other person and event that doesn't have a statue. Your post is simply preamble into a pointless Democrats vs Republicans argument which is the only view you're even remotely capable of having, it seems. I've seen toddlers with more granular thinking than you're capable of. -
Well, it HAS been good for those in the business of blood money. If somebody really wants to know motivations of keeping it going ask those people first. The next people to ask are those that will profit from the natural resources on the off chance that one day they are able to exploit them. It has been estimated there is about a trillion dollars in the ground of Afghanistan. If it costs a few 10s of billions of dollars to someday be able to get control over them, I think you'll find most people would still think that is a bargain . . . for them. Privatize Afghanistan? Here comes the rise of the super-corporations - It'd be like something out of a science fiction movie. If one of them isn't called Weyland Yutani I'm going to be really upset.

I agree with you that's it's a quagmire that can't be solved by our involvement, but leaving also doesn't solve things and would probably make life worse for everyone. The two events wouldn't have equally bad outcomes. Personally I think that if terrorism is bad now, it'd be a hundred times worse if the cooalition just up and left. The problem is who has the stomach for an endless, unwinnable war? It's not exactly the most moral boosting mission statement for the troops...

Put up a damn picture of something fun you've been doing
yoink replied to JohnMitchell's topic in The Bonfire
Nice! I don't have the gear for a nitro finish on mine so tend to stick to a finishing oil. One day I'll get some practice with a spray gun. I've just bought a bunch of modelling foam that I thought might be a great way to test out some new custom shapes I'm thinking of. Next one is going to be a riff on a Tinozza acoustic bass I think. Oh, and I still need to finish the ukulele I promised my wife 2 years ago! -
I actually don't have any problem with people like this - as long as they keep themselves to themselves they're harmless. The second they try and force their insanity on everyone else is where I lose my temper though. Creationists insisting that the story of how earth was created 4000 years ago by God be given the same weight and time as evolution when being taught in schools, for example.
