I just got back from one. It's one of the hardest things you can do, especially if you had any connection to that person at all. I was the only one that laughed out loud at that in the theater I was in, but yeah, that failed miserably. And +1 to everything else you said, too. You know, when they were focused on something relevant and significant, like the poignant-seeming formation of the sandman, where he's aware that he's been rendered into granules of dirt trying to re-form into what he remembers he WAS, all done in relative silence, I was enthralled. But there was a severe paucity of those moments. and I'm guessing that Raimi wasn't sold on the idea of Venom as a worthwhile endeavor as far as depth of character was concerned. Venom was almost a footnote, and without the ability of the audience to connect with him on some level (comic book geek-hood aside) there's no reasonable and genuine way to bank on him as a new player in this franchise...or one of his own. It seems that Raimi and the rest of this production took too much on faith that is showing through the ultra-thin fabric of this script and screenplay. Think what Thomas Hayden Church could have done with a well developed and meaningful character that didn't seem thrown in for CGI grins. And poor Topher Grace. His "revenge" as Venom was as weak as watered-down near-beer. If this franchise can EVER be revived, it needs to come out of Raimi's hands and given to someone with a better vision for what Spiderman is all about. Gun hands...sheesh. Oh, our theatre had an inappropriate laughter moment that showed the audience as a whole couldn't suspend disbelief and identify with the characters. Part trois...I'm not sure what happened, but they failed to connect with at least the one audience I was able to view the movie with. Less action, less energy and more talking. Don't get me wrong, I love good dialog in a good movie. However, that's not really why we go see movies like Spiderman, is it? And the goofy gun-hands and dancing down the street? I was underwhelmed and disappointed with Raimi and company. They took a reasonably successful franchise and gave it a "meh" effort, as if to say, "Yeah, we're essentially done with this series." Any chance of taking what could have been a decent spin-off franchise in Venom was ruined by their lack of true character development in that regard. I can see why Tobey Maguire has stated he's most likely not going to be a part of any further Spidey offerings. Tops at the box office this weekend or not, this one was the weakest offering of the three.
