Word is spreading now, late in the game, and people are starting to respond and submit videos. I believe I now have 5 or 6 submissions, with more people promising the meet the June 15th deadline for submitting DVDs of their work. I'm getting excited about this, which means I'll be getting less and less sleep the closer we get to the event date. You know what's funny? I have WAY more prizes than videos submitted, so the possibility exists that we'll have multiple prizes for the submitted videos. Okay, so maybe the film I slapped together was more like 3 minutes, but I'm just making a point. Have fun with the projects and they'll flow well and come rather easily. I just want people to have fun, enter the film festival and win prizes so that I don't have to go back to the vendors with their generous donations and apologize for pestering them for weeks. We won't be terribly picky about the films being exactly 10 minutes. What we're trying to avoid is the 15-150 minute films that will drive people to the bar and other beer stops, pulling them away from the actual viewing of the films. Getting people to sit still for ten minutes at a time isn't generally that difficult a task, much like herding drunken cats. Honestly? I've received one video and MANY promises that videos are on the way. Lots of prizes up for grabs. I mean, a ten minute film? I can slap one together in 30 minutes...but I won't be entering my own film festival except as a last resort to fill time. I dunno. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man? I hope he's able to do the role justice. Another failed Marvel movie franchise attempt might make it hard to sell further serious ideas along comic book lines, and I REALLY want to see more projects like The Watchmen make it to the big screen. At Raeford, we are using the following guidelines: 1. Swoopers must either exit low, swoop before regular traffic or after. We also discuss any deviations from the set pattern before the loads go up (i.e. downwind landings and such). Swooping IN traffic will earn you one chance to correct (with direct involvement of the school or other experienced jumpers). Second time means you're done for at least the day. 2. Landing patterns are not only discussed at the mock-up before the loads go up, they are posted on a board there as well, for all to see. Again, anyone going contrary to these discussed patterns gets one chance before they are informed of their right to take their business elsewhere. 3. We have a designated "high-performance" landing area for swoopers. Non-high-performance pilots have the rest of the landing area to themselves. Other than that, we do not limit what degree of turns can be performed, as long as canopy pilots are operating within the stated rules for the landing areas. You could always use a live CD distro of Linux, like Knoppix, to start to learn it. Aside from gaming, you'd be surprised at how pleased you'll be with Linux and what you can do for free (legally) with Linux that you have to pay for with NaziSoft. I'll go 100% Linux before I load Vista on any of my machines...at least for the next 2-3 "service packs" they release to fix problems with sloppy code in Vista that should have been ironed out BEFORE they released it.
