Does this depend on whether they're in a bi-plane (front-back) or side-by-side configuration? My understanding was to cut away a side-by-side, even if it's flying stable at the moment, because it could transition into a down-plane.

I think the poll results would be more interesting with a male/female breakout. I pretty much assume most guys are OK with some form of the FB concept. My intuition is that more women would not be comfortable with it, but my track record as far as knowing what women think is not so good.

... not that there's anything wrong with that, right?
-
Bummer! Maybe it's for the better, though ... start showing boobies and who knows where it might lead.

Unfortunately, no. Since Britain often pioneers cultural trends that eventually end up over here, I can only hope that this will catch on soon.

I hesitate to be so familiar with someone I've never met, but I sure find your avatar to be pretty sexy!

Maybe you underestimate yourself. -
Bill Bryson -A short History of nearly everything
PrairieDoug replied to PhoenixFire's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks -- I'm overdue to start a new book and this looks like a contender. Bryson's "A Walk in the Woods" about hiking the Appalachian trail was very entertaining and thought provoking. -
Sometmes less really is more, grasshopper. There is beauty in simplicity.

Damn, that is going to be one fine breakfast! I didn't vote because any of the choices would be terrific... in fact, just the bacon/eggs/toast is great. (I think this post caught my attention 'cause it's almost noon here on the east coast and I'm really hungry!)

What a great run you had! I've never met you, but have followed some of your exploits with interest and admiration. A lot of people have more jumps, but very few have pushed the limits like you did. You seem like a "character who has character", if that makes any sense. Best wishes for whatever is next.

My 2 oldest daughters have both jumped, and one of them completed AFF. I gotta say the experience was terrifying for me... ...not the skydiving part, but the wild clothes-optional DZ parties and how these young hotties that I brought into the world would handle all the horn dog skydivers hitting on them.

Agreed... How different individuals choose to respond to events like this is their own business. They should be able to do so without the rest of us doubting their motives or the validity of their feelings.

Several people of both genders have endorsed the "wanna go make out" approach. My intuition is that it wouldn't be very effective, but my intuition has not served me very well lately. So... is this BS or what? I guess maybe success is measured by getting her to smile, rather than getting her to literally make out. Or not... I dunno.

In looking at responses from women in the "Define Sexy" thread, "confidence" seems to be a key element of being sexy. I'm really curious about what that means. I know it's kind of a "I know it when I see it" type of thing, but can anyone be more specific? What is it about a guy that tells you whether or not he's confident? And where's the line between being confident/sexy and arrogant/annoying? This is all just part of my ongoing quest to better understand how women think.

Interesting thread. The character flaw/shortcoming I've been aware of the most recently is that I tend to want what I can't have and attach less value to good things that are freely given to me. This often reveals itself in the context of relationships (shocker, right?). I once heard that "happiness is wanting what you have, not getting what you want." Sounds good to me, I'm just not there yet!

Damn, I was at the WFFC and missed this?

I recently inquired about doing wingsuit jumps at the WFFC, and was told the minimum was 500 jumps. While a little disappointed, I have enough respect for the people making these decisions to accept their judgment at face value. The solution for me is getting more jumps under my belt to meet the requirement, not trying to figure out how to get around it.

I see your point. For me, it's also true that I do less purely reckless shit with no payoff beyond the immediate "thrill." But I don't put skydiving in that category (not saying that you do). For me, skydiving is a calculated risk with a valid payoff in terms of fun, skill development and personal growth. I'm more willing now to take a calculated risk to acheive those things, in part because I've already done the marriage/career/family thing.

Cool segment... I caught it yesterday while waiting at a pizza place to pick up lunch. A large group of suits was watching it from their table. When the guy had the rough landing, one of them got all indignant and said (loudly enough for all to hear) "You know what, we end up paying the bills for those clowns." And another chimed in, "Yeah, and when they get better they'll be right back doing it again." Pissed me off,,, I was about to say "Who picks up the tab for fat fucks like you who don't have a life and get a heart attack from too many deep dish pizzas?" But I've found that I'm usually well served by restraint of tongue and pen, so I decided to let it go.

The "Is it worth it? question is obviously a personal one, with no "right" or "wrong" answer. For each of us, where we come out depends on a lot of factors. JRock, I'm curious how old you are. This is because I've been thinking about how our assessment of risks changes as we get older. I find that maybe I'm willing to take risks now that I would not have assumed when I was younger. Some of the stuff that can happen is a tragedy at any age, but especially for someone who is younger and has more of their life ahead of them, so to speak. Does that resonate with anyone?

My Rantoul highlights include: 1. Bunch of 4-12 way RW jumps organized by Airspeed -- those guys (and of course Eliana) know how to bring out the best in everyone and their enthusiasm for the sport is contagious. 2. Balloon jump with Norman Kent -- 'nuff said. 3. High altitude (23 grand) jump from the WTS King Air. A group from Quantum Leap (near St Louis) very generously invited me to join their group on the jump. 4. BirdMan seminar by Chuck Blue and Scott ("Lou Diamond") -- very well organized and thorough. 5. Bi-plane -- gotta do it once. 6. PAC 750 -- great jump plane. 7. Almost meeting Vanilla Sky Girl -- she was visiting the Airspeed tent and I was gonna go over to say hi, but next time I looked she had vanished. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

Personally, I would be happy with less of the "frat party on steroids" excess that I see around the sport. It's not my idea of fun (anymore) and it's potentially unsafe, However, I've always figured that I need to adjust my attitudes and actions to DZ reality, rather than vice versa. I don't have to patronize any DZ that I don't feel comfortable at, party all night, or jump with anyone that I consider unsafe. Since I'm not a DZO or S&TA, what other jumpers do is their own business.

Did anyone see Laura Bush on O'Reilly last night?
PrairieDoug replied to Muenkel's topic in Speakers Corner
I think they are both MILFs , but my judgment may have become blurred by the lack of action I've been experiencing lately. Edited to add for Zenister: Yup, Tipper's a MILF too. Damn, I need to get my mojo back.
